News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

people often ask why the Polish charged at tanks with cavalry,

Really? They know that? Nobody asked me about it..and most of the people I work with have College/University degrees. I guess, they don't teach that in College, maybe is just a word on the street. Kick their a## next time. Lol.

News / "Poles want cut on foreign workers" - (in Poland obviously) [47]

Now all of you Polish people should go back home to get your old jobs back.

Well, Arlene..looks like Poles are giving away the jobs they don't want to do any longer (at least in Poland). My cousin said last Sunday (over Skype) that the new Olimpic stadiums will be built by Chinese..cheaper. Arghhh.

Love / Nice Polish women photos [329]

I had a visitor from Poland this weekend, only 17, on her winter break decided to visit her two aunties in The USA. She mostly stayed with my sis in NY (she does not work) so I had her for 3 days only in Chicago. Yes, she is very pretty, but also pretty vein. She feels like the world should love and admire her... somewhat shy, somewhat demanding attention...oh, the beauty of youth. We had a great time though and shopping for dresses was more exciting than the Sears Tower or site-seeing...! :)

Not too often I get to deal with 17 year olds, but it was a lovely experience!

Love / The age of consent in Poland is only 15 [147]

women know when we say things about men
they get angry, its not about killing anyone.

Yeah, we we wanted to act up on what we think, the men population would be pretty scarce :)

Travel / Weird and wonderful sights in Poland [30]

There is nothing weird about "krasnoludki" (little people). They are among us...Wroclaw is full of them. Kids believe in them and love them, adults are amused every time they see them. Beware of them, don't ever get them mad. Many bad things may happen to you...

Food / Polish recipe for booyah [26]

I think you mean bryja, which is (was) made of boiled grains and dried fruit. This kind of nutritious meal helped survive many starving families during wars or in the spring, when the food supply would grow scarce.

I don't think anybody is cooking this kind of stuff now...

USA, Canada / Polish Citizen, US legal resident, but no Polish Passport... [67]

My polish passport expired a decade ago or longer. I think of renewing it, I don't know exactly why (yet), but I wonder if it will be costly and not to hard to do. I need to make that phone call to a polish travel agency...

Food / Polish food in Pictures. [277]

No more food for me today, but I might snap a picture as I warm up a bowl of soup tomorrow! And, a plate of cheese pierogi to boot. Naah, did not make them, too much work. Complements of polish deli. :)

Food / Polish food in Pictures. [277]

I made kapuśniak soup today. Smoked sausage and bacon based. I thought I bite my tongue off chowing on it. :) mmm...so good.
I love soups and stews on cold winter days! Krupnik is on my list tomorrow.
Bonus. Both soups will make wonderful leftovers for my lunches.

USA, Canada / National City Bank complaint. Polish-client experience. [20]

online i can look at all info dating to the moment my account was opened

I opened my account with the current bank in 1993...I don't think I can or want to look back that far. Why would I, anyway?

USA, Canada / National City Bank complaint. Polish-client experience. [20]

She claimed they were wrong again, even though it was impossible since in my life in Chicago area I only used these three phone numbers.

I decided to call National City bank to find out if maybe the check was cashed or what is going on with it.

You could have checked it on line yourself to see if it posted to the account. Right? Who wants to call 800 number nowadays? You may end in Mubai for what I know - and they don't budge.

She asked me about my name and my social security number.

Quite a normal practice. How would she/he know who is calling?
It is your responsibility to notify the bank about any changes in your profile..i.e. address, phone number etc.
Would you like the bank to tell ALL your information to anybody who calls and without any proper identification? I don't think so.

Banking system that only keeps information for 30 days is good for kids, maybe.

Yes and no. The service person can access only 30-45 days of account activity(depends on the bank). The rest is on your statement faithfully sent to you monthly. Check it yourself or bank on line, you can spot any potential post which is not yours and dispute it promptly.

You see, the system would be very slow and non responsive if the bank kept a year of data on each and every customer...it's just a simple business practice - everywhere.

No comments on any other information as I don't really know about the banks(s) you mentioned. It looks like their merger did not go smooth and that's too bad.

There are still plenty of good, solid banks left to bank with. We've got to keep our big buck somewhere safe, don't we? :)

The mattress isn't gonna do... all the dust mites will chow on it...y'know.eeek.

i really don't ever need to go in. i use my visa/atm/check card for everything. i pay all my bills through their website an have my pay directly deposited.

That's my boy, that's the way to do it. We all have computers...why waste your time on call service 'morons'?
I have to agree that calling 800 number is a not a good experience recently. I had my share of it with my carpet removal/dispute calls. Yikes. BUT I GOT MY VISA CREDITED BACK!!!! So I'm going shopping tomorrow.

News / What is wrong with Poland that Poles emigrate? [167]

I can be a professional translator

It is great that a lot of polish, educated people think they can conquer the world with a piece of a graduating paper or a degree. Unfortunately, many end up doing menial jobs. Very sad and what a waste. Switezianka, don't sell yourself short. Get what you deserve and what you KNOW. The piece of paper helps, but it does not get you abroad what you want and what you deserve. You need to be certified in the country you decide to stay (UK?) and show what you can.

A real smart employer will test you and give you the opportunity. The rest is up to you. I did it, you can too.

USA, Canada / How to get Drivers license in IL without social security? [96]

I knew a person who got some kind of International License based on his polish driver license, but at least he already had one. Some travel agency took care of it. I'm not sure how legal that was and all, but he had a car and drove.

Genealogy / Polish person's average height? [210]

Food / Kopytka, pyzy, kluski [60]

Not unlike a garlic press, but the thing is about 4" wide.

Where did you get that? Would Crate & Barrel have it? It sounds like a good kitchen tool.
