Life / A new Poland's war - the poor vs the rich [81]

We have better exam results in Catholic schools in the UK

So do we in Poland. :):):):)

IThey wanted the nice new shiny mobile phone but not prepared to work for it..they believe that working in a shop or fast food outlet is beneath them but at the same time they dont have the skills or education to get anything better and they aren't prepared to better themselves in order to get a decent job!

I can sign under it with my both hands.

strongest survive then, what about the others that are not naturally business minded?

Look and read above.

By all things that restrain social mobility and condemn the poor to remain poor

As long as there is democracy, everybody is free to shape his/her life as they want. In democracy, everybody has a chance to become somebody. If people don`t take the chance, it is their problem. It is enough to learn and read books - that is what I tell my students. Guys who don`t listen, end up in protest demonstrations against unemployment.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

laundrette

Wroclaw:
laundrette

+1

Funny. That was the only thing in the USA which I hadn`t seen in Poland before. And I still don`t see it today.

To be honest, who really needs a self-service laundry in Poland? All private households have a washing machine and if you rent a flat, you just need to find one with it.

While in US, I used the service twice or thrice, and considered it very weird, as sth against my nature, culture, upbringing, everything. Washing my clothes in public, listening to gossiping women while waiting for the end of the process, seemed very depressing to me. I felt like an idiot. That was at the beginning of my stay, when I had to spend a few nights in an accidental apartment without the machine. But I moved and all my next apartments were furnished with washing machines, they were the main prerequisite.

online tax returns

You are a bit out of date. The service was set up two or three years ago.

podatki-pit.pl
e-deklaracje.gov.pl
pitprzezinternet.info/pit-online.html

Free refills on sodas.

What`s that? Buy one soda/coffee and get another one for free?

Funny it was mentioned by so many posters..... :):):):):)

Chips with gravy

What`s the problem? Get chips and pour your gravy on them....:):):):)

Life / A new Poland's war - the poor vs the rich [81]

its a well documented fact that the majority of the London rioters were of foreign ethnicities, in a word poor people.

So, you assume that foreign ethnicity equals poverty. OK.

But was poverty really the main driving force behind the riots?

the London riots for me was essentially the perfect example of the poor rising up against the rich

Come on. Don`t make it more serious than it really was. :):):):)

The London/UK riots last year were caused by spoilt brats who had gotten bored with their trendy gadgets and wanted to try sth different, like burning houses, for a change.

but wheres the cut off point? at what point will they say enough is enough?

The point is in very far future. Polish brats aren`t as spoilt as British counterparts.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

Checking news sites, I frequently run into advertisements of services which are still scarce, unpopular or unexistent in Poland.

First example: mobile tyre fitting.

atyouraddress.com/services/mobile-tyre-fitting.html

s

Have your tyres fitted at your address in and around London. Doesn't matter where you are in London, through atYourAddress.com you can locate and choose best mobile tyre fitting offer in London for your requirements. No more waiting at greasy tyre shops to choose from the range of tyres that is only in stock, mobile tyre fitting sorts that out.

Funny!

In Poland the traditional way is to visit a tyre shop. When a snowstorm suddenly strikes, queues can be really unbearable.

Lets hear some of them then....

Walking the dog

Warsaw: 20 PLN - £3.7

London - £15

thevips.co.uk/price.shtml

If he told you to jump of a bridge would you? its 58000 miles, where did you get 80,000 from Pawian?

Ooops, I am sorry, I wrote 80.000 miles meaning kilometers.

108.000 miles of UK car = 173.809 km

173.809km minus 80.000 km of PL car = over 90.000 km difference.

For Poland it is a lot.

If he told you to jump of a bridge would you?

Funny, I heard this saying very often as a child. :):):):) *

You cant be using it right, heres a list of Escorts for under £1000.

Yes, thank you, it only corroborates my opinion - Polish second hand cars are NOT

way more expensive

than UK cars. Actually, they are a bit lower or the same.

Please, stop being so stubborn. Check the prices at last. I know you don`t have time but please, do it for goodness sake so that we can stop talking about fekking cars.

Based on my observations and it is something ive observed and studied over the years, I would estimate Polish used car prices around 10-20% more expensive, depending on the exchange rate.

We are talking about prices today and now, not 4 years ago as you remember them from your stay in Poland.

* Do you know the Polish saying: gadał dziad do obrazu?

Wroclaw Boy:Poland is notorously known for having way more expensive used cars.

It is not true.

Oh, I just remembered you write that your last time in Poland was a few years ago.

Memories are a good thing, but they seldom pertain to new reality. Sorry.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

The UK had similar problems and went about fixing it. They managed to do it but it took years and a lot of hard work.

But Brits didn`t contain violence after all. It erupted across British cities last year. Remember?

Sorry, but the violence removed from stadiums will occur again and again in streets of London and elsewhere in the future.

I prefer when violence is limited to stadiums than if it rages through streets.

i dont think a few thousand miles

Actually, it is 80.000 miles difference.

But if you think it is not a lot.... :):):):)

Poland is notorously known for having way more expensive used cars.

It is not true.

Ive known guys in PL to buy like 1995 Ford Escorts for around 8000 PLN, you can get better models in the UK for less than £500 / 2700 PLN

Strange.

Ford Escort, 2000, 1.6: 1500 PLN - £ 277.
otomoto.pl/ford-escort-C24349818.html

or 2000 PLN - £370.
otomoto.pl/ford-escort-C24139991.html

The cheapest UK Ford Escort on your website costs £600 .
autotrader.co.uk/used-cars/ford/escort

Ohh come on i dont have time to sit there studying specs, it was a quick match,

Don`t worry, I have spent some time looking at prices in UK and PL. That is why, I stick to my earlier opinion. :):):):)

There are hundreds, if not thousands of things. :):):)
Lets hear some of them then....

I already mentioned them.

15 PLN versus £10. It is like £ 2.80 to 10. Not bad.
Actually, all compared services have more or less the same ratio, be it haircut or car repair.

Do you expect me to provide all of them? :):):):)

Yes, that is my plan, but you need to be patient. One at a time, OK? :):):):)

The article was translated:
Comments:

- More Poles are being killed in England than in Poland nowadays.

- British soccer fans are the most peaceful of all.

It is known that in previous decades some Blacks and other non-Whites would accept the term.

Thanks. I was unaware of it.

Audi A3 1.6 2004 in Poland 32,000 PLN or £5,800
Audi A3 1.6 2004 in the UK £3,695 or 20,080 PLN

You showed different cars, actually. UK car is 3 door,

And its mileage is much lower.

But it doesn`t matter, really. After having a look at second hand car prices, PL is more or less equal to UK. Disadvantage, then.

What's your definition of a "coloured" person? This is a very outdated term that many living in the 21st century would find disparaging and offensive.

Like Eskimo?

Are you intolerant to Polish people?

No, he/she only desires his/her 5 minute fame in the PF.

But the fairy tale ends when it comes to manufactured products.

Yes, in that case 1:4 (1:5 sometimes) ratio vanishes.

Fiat Panda, 1.2, hatchback
UK - £ 8 396

Shyt, I thought strawberries in Poland are quite expensive this year due to frosty winter. We are buying only 1 kilo per day.

Supermarket prices:

UK - £ 8.30 per kilo.

PL - 10 PLN - £1.10

tesco.com/groceries/ProductBuylist/default.aspx?id=L00005512

Vincent:
How much is a haircut in Poland?

I pay 15zl.

15 in a big city.

12 in the countryside.

15 PLN versus &10. It is like & 2.80 to 10. Not bad.
Actually, all compared services have more or less the same ratio, be it haircut or car repair.

Today`s exchange rate is &1 - 5.43 PLN

It's not a fair comparison,

Yes, and no. :):):)

It is perfectly fair when it concerns a visitor to London. They haven`t got Oyster cards (btw, nice name).

However, even 3.60 PLN to £2 isn`t so bad. Still 3.5 times cheaper. :):):):)

OK, when we talk about residents, yes, it might be an unfair comparison.

So, let`s compare sth which functions in both capitals - monthly passes/tickets/travelcards for unlimited rides in zone 1.

Warsaw - 90 PLN (£18)

London £112.20

There is a difference, isn`t there? :):):):)

In English
ztm.waw.pl/index.php?c=110&l=2

tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14416.aspx

It's also possible to catch a bus in London for £1.30.

2012 price is £1.35 :):):)

Come to think of it, I can't think of anything which is genuinely cheaper in Poland (if you consider local wages).

There are hundreds, if not thousands of things. :):):)

Oddly enough, it costs £2.70 for a bus fare round here - more expensive than London, but we have much lower wages!! <grr>

Round here means Manchester? Good.

We have compared capitals so far.

How about other cities?

Krakow bus fare: 3.20 PLN = £ 0.60

Manchester, as you say, : £2.70

mpk.krakow.pl/pl/bilety2/cenniki-biletow-jednoprzejazdowych-i-wieloprzejazdowych04082011

Unfortunately, I couldn`t locate Manchester transport site.

I earn six times as much as I would in Poland, so those "expensive" British fares would be much more affordable than Polish fares.

Yes! :):):):):)

BTW, congrats! :):):)

News / Why are many Poles anti-Euro2012 [16]

Hey guys I am here studying in Poland and I notice alot of people are anti-Euro for the soccer tournament but my Polish isn't that great so I dont understand much when they explain why. Do you guys know why so many Poles are against this tournament?

I met a few Poles and none objected. They are either enthusiastic or neutral.

Most critics can be read on the Net. They claim that instead of stadiums, the government should build nurseries, preschools etc.

Housing Policy = Government.

We already went through it - in communism.

But yes - I can agree - the government should do more to relieve the situation, especially for young marriages.

You could always read the report and educate yourself a little.

Your report is from 2004. It is not bad, but simply too old - in result - outdated.

Newest reports talk about 200.000 flats which will have to be removed from the market in the nearest future. However, those flats aren`t in communist blocks which still hold strong.

Do you just like arguing for the sake of it?.

Yes, I do. Just like you.

I said a life expectancy. To make it simple for you, it means usefulness.

Yes, you did.

These were constructed with an expected lifespan of approx. 50 years (that's assuming that they were built to specs) and you think that they will last another 200 years? Stay off the subject of property, it's not your strong point.

Hmm, don`t you think that such terms as lifespan and last suggest the overall duration of the thing discussed, and not its usefulness?

life span or life·span (lfspn)
n.
1. A lifetime.
2. The average or maximum length of time an organism, material, or object can be expected to survive or last.

The government will need to begin very soon.

Actually, it seems you don`t know that the government has little to do with those housing cooperatives called spółdzielnia mieszkaniowa which own and run most blocks.

I will comment on what I know, not guesswork.

hmm........

I am not surprised that you chose to attack everything I say on a personal level.

Not at all. I only question your expertise on communist blocks.

You said:

I believe the post was referring to the post war, communist era, apartment blocks. These were constructed with an expected lifespan of approx. 50 years (that's assuming that they were built to specs) and you think that they will last another 200 years?

According to it, first blocks should have collapsed a few years ago.

Nothing like that has happened.

Those blocks, hundred thousands of them all over Poland, are ugly and primitive, yet they are all standing.

What`s wrong with your theory?

Same thing happened in the UK and they are still demolishing these types of buildings now.

It is natural. If people lose interest in living there, the buildings are pulled down.

I said it already: communist blocks will also be gradually demolished because people will find better places to live.

You may think that the communist blocks are part of the "quaintness" of what Poland is about, that is your perogotive,

Did you really draw such a conclusion from my several posts? :):):):) if yes, I must say you see things which don`t exist......

If you do not have anything to add except your ignorance, feel free not to comment.

yaaawn.....

Again: spare me those incantations.
