News / Poland's President-Elect Duda leads in public trust - CBOS poll [185]

murky world

Allegations!

Duda represents the real Poland

48 percent of Poles believe that president-elect Andrzej Duda will be a better president than outgoing Bronisław Komorowski, a CBOS poll showed ahead of his inauguration. Only 22 percent said Duda's presidency would be worse than that of his his predecessor.

The presidential election, Kukiz's surprise 20% support and now this survey clearly show that the Polish people have had it up to here with the unkept promises and scandals of the Platfusy. And good riddance!

Food / SURVEY OF THE POLISH CONSUMERS' CONSUMPTION HABITS OF CAFÉS [28]

Turkish style

This is a culinary misnomer. In Poland (maybe in otehr Soviet bloc countreis?) putting a heaping teaspoon of ground coffee into a glass and topping up with boiling water was erroneojusly called "kawa po turecki". Turks and others in that cultural zone brew coffee in long-handled metal pots and allow it to rise several times.

Did you know that in PRL the River Vistula roughly separated the tea-drinking east from the more coffee-consuming west of the country?

old age pensioners

Show some respect unlike the Tuskite slime attacking Poland's grandmothers (mohery). Edited..
Duda represents the real Poland of decent, hard-working, law-abiding and God-fearing families. God bless 'em!

As has been repeatedly noted -- yet another example of the skewed, distorted and lopsided jonian manner of evaluation: degeneration is normal, bad is good, black is white.... And one should add: there is no law against it!

Barbara Blida, Aleksander Kwasniewski etc and some idealists like Ikonowicz

All unsavoury types - Kwaśniewski like Miller and Blida were in the PZPR, a party which took its orders from Moscow and upheld the Katyń Lie. Ikonowicz was in the SLD and is a wild-eyed leftist crackpot (and boozer) if there ever was one. They're the kind of people that if you invited them over for dinner you'd do well to count your cutlery afterwards.

Christianity is very socialist

Jesus prefered the poor to the elite business class or arrogant know-all eggheads (known back then as money changers and pharisees ). Card. Wyszyński, who had thoroughly studied Marxism, worker issues and the trade-union movement, favoured a Third Road between socialism and capitalism. In fact the Polish constitution refers to Poland's economy as a social market economy. How much of the "social" is actually being implemented is debatable. In Poland people avoid the socialist label because it was once associated with the PZPR and many think of it to this day in terms of totalitarianism.

News / Poland's President-Elect Duda leads in public trust - CBOS poll [185]

left leaning party

Only to those hyper-materialists who focus mainly on money. But PiS is not left-leaning in a political, socio-cultural and ideational sense. Ideas are also important, and those do include the need to more equitably spread the wealth, make sure foreign banks and other corporations pay their fair share and prevent the emergence of oligarchy. Labels are less important.

both conservative

The PO used to be centre-right but is now left-leaning. Everyone including PO members agree the party has taken a turn ot the left, although that is variously assessed depending on the PO member's own personal priorities. How else could you explain all the pro-libertine legislation they are forcing through. Agreed, there is no ideological fervour behind it, only the vision of the provervbial "feeding trough" at which they want to stay. Since the leftist party is doing so poorly, the Platfusy are hoping to catch some of their voters. And to less libertine PO members who migth balk they've got a ready excuse: the EU requires it of us.

News / Poland's President-Elect Duda leads in public trust - CBOS poll [185]

This may seem far-fetched at present, but as you know in love, war and politics most anything is possible.
Imagine that even Kukiz fails to make it under the wire and only PiS nad PO are in the Sejm, a US-style bipartisan assembly would emerge. That woudl really become a poltical slugfest. Unless somehow they achieved some crease-fire, truce or other form of accommodaiton - "for the good of the country." Except htat most politicians operate mainly "for the good for the trough."

News / Secularism = a dying society. How this phenomenon affects birth rate in Poland? [20]

At Przystanek Jezus, a Catholic counter-event held in connection with Owsiak's Przystanek Woodstock, the well-known former rock star and current journalist and TV personality Jan Pospieszalski took centre stage.

"Everywhere that there exists a secularised society, demographic depression ensues. Researchers have studied the problem and approach it purely through he prism of scientific analysis. One thing emerges therefrom: Societies begin dying wherever an abortion and contraceptive mentality proliferates," Pospieszalski noted.

According to Pospieszalski, that is taking place all over Europe where a birth rate of 1.3-1.5 prevails. In some cases where a 1.7 has been achieved it has been mainly through immigration. A woman msut bear just over than 2 chldren just the sustain the current demographic status.

History / The story about German- Polish reconciliation [194]

two biggest lies

Ever heard of a politician who doesn't lie? All is fair in politics where, pious platitudes notwithstanding, the main goal is to get to the trough and stay there as long as possible.

News / Poland's President-Elect Duda leads in public trust - CBOS poll [185]

45% should be enough to secure a majority of one.

Dunno, but if that actually occurred probably PiS would be better off going it alone than hooking up with Kukiz. On the one hand, I'd still like to give Kukiz a chance and see what he can do. But he strikes me as a maverick and potential trouble-maker -- and PiS are still living down their bitter memories of Lepper and Giertych. What's your take on this?

D'Hondt system

What if Petru, PSL and SLD each got 5-6% of the vote, PiS got 37, PO 22 and Kukiz 10. How many seats each would that that translate into?

Merged: Translating voters support into parliamentary seats?

Anyone know the formula for translaitng voter support into parliamentary mandates? AFAIK it somehow depends on how many parties clear the 5% threshold and the ovderlal spread of votes.

How would the latest poll result -- PiS, 47.1%, PO 30.3% and Kukiz 10.5% -- look in terms of mandates if those were the only 3 parties that made it thorugh?

Correcting typo: should be overall

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

what does he care

Being a true patriot he cares about the Polish people, not the PO oldboy network. And he is not on Brussels' leash the way the Platfusy are. Most Poles were opposed to raising retirement age but what do PO care about what people think. Most Poles oppose nuclear power, but the neo-tuskites are moving ahead with their atomic projects.

Language / Zmarła czy zdechła? What is proper to say in Polish in a case of an animal death? [12]

mean more or less the same

They mean exactly the same, but zemrzeć is appropriate only for humans.
Germans too, I believe, callsa animal mouth a Maul and a human one a Mund.
Polish too: morda - animal, usta - human. Although as an insult people say: Zamknij mordę. (Shut your yap!)
Same with to eat: with animals it's żreć with people - jeść.
An animal has a łeb, a person -- a głowa.

with a link

There is life beyond links. Not everybody is chained to e-gadgetry. People hear things at work, at parties, on trains and buses and in shops, see headlines at news agent's, etc., etc. On more than one occasion I have heard things the lines of "dogs are also people", admittedly not in Poland. "Pies to też człowiek" sounds ridiculoius in the tongue of Mickiewicz and Słowacki. In view of the dog beauty parlours, hotels, clothing shops, cemeteries, etc., there must be people that actually believe it and are willing to fork over their hard-earned cash to prove it.

Language / Zmarła czy zdechła? What is proper to say in Polish in a case of an animal death? [12]

Radio Zet reported a female badger named Wandzia that drank 7 bottles of beer was found drunk asleep on the beach at Rewal. Despite efforts to save her, the animal died. radio Zet said:

"Wandzia w nocy zmarła." I was always taught that with animals it should be zdechła. Can anyone clarify?

Genealogy / Unanswered Polish names requests - anyone have information on the following? [21]

Of course this is highly speculative, but it may go back to the Old High German root "wig" which had to do with war, struggle, conflict, etc. It has generated such surnames as Wiebke and over the generations the "k" may have got lost and ended up as Wiebe. That's regarding only the name -- its bearers may have been Polsih or of any other ethnicity. If an ethnic German came to or was born in Polish territory and subsequent generations intermarried exlcusively or primarily with Polish natives, at what point would the namesake cease being German?

Besides, maybe he is part Polish thanks to his maternal line.

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

I admired Kukiz

According to the latest GfK Polonia survey only 3 parties would make it into the Sejm if elections were held this Sunday. United Right (PiS, Polska Razem i Solidarna Polska) 47.1%, PO 30.3% and Kukiz 10.5%. That marks 4.6% drop for Kukiz compared to the previous poll.

A PiS-Kukiz coalition would have a healthy 57.6% majority but.....
Reminds me of a Polish saying: Złapał kozak tatarzyna a tatarzyn za łeb trzyma. (A Cossack caught a Tatar but the Tatar has got him by the neck).

Letting Kukiz into such a coaliton might be the proverbial bull in a china shop. He might be a bigger pain than Lepper nad Giertych were combined.

Just an aside -- the support for PiS by Poles in Poland seems ot be inching its way up to neat the 60+% level the party can count on in Polonia.

The abbreviation PiS stands for: Poland is Patriotic!

President-Elect Andrzej Duda told TVP1 he would do everything in his power to reduce retirement age or resign. There have been other indications that after PiS win the election they will undo the idiotic anti-Polish and pro-libertine legislation forced through by the Platfusy. And it won't be any too soon! PO and all their crooks nad scammers will soon end up on the trash heap of history where they belong!.

Paweł Kukiz

Paweł Kukiz has begun highlighting "planks" of his poltical programme. He opposes abortion except when the woman's life is in danger. He is opposed to foreign poltical or media outposts (agentura in the original) that come to Poland and protect minorities. He also said: "We must restore the normal family where a a woman can afford a rich husband, ie one not encumbered by taxes. Today women must work whether they wnat to or not. They earn as much as the tax encumbering their spouses. Of course, I have nothing against women working if they want to, I'm liberal, they can hold down four jobs if they want. The point is that they shouldn't be forced to."

too much wine and smoked herbal cigarettes

So you're now the "authority" you're quoting is St Dorothy of Poland (aka Doda). She's the scandaliser that calls attention to herself by coming without knickers on and casting (wine and herb) aspersions of the Word of God. BTW ciggies were not invented until the 19th century.
