UK, Ireland / Fish and chips - do Polish people in the UK like this? [108]

i) How do you get it home from the shop ?
ii) How long do you have to go without bath before Christmas?

it is a tough creature - if you bring it home within half an hour in a plastic bag (especially when it is cold - say no heating in the car) it's gonna survive most of the time

then you can also more and more often buy it (almost) ready to be prepared - i.e. killed and gutted

ii - of course it depends on when you get to buy it - waiting for the last moment is not always the best option - in the constant shortage times of commies one would buy carp when only stood a chance - so sometimes no proper bath for over a week

having said that carp is actually awful to my taste - would rahter have fish and chips anyday

UK, Ireland / Fish and chips - do Polish people in the UK like this? [108]

So then can we say that perhaps with an iron to straighten out a few details that fish and chips in poland at an affordable price would be a good idea?

you would need to have a good look around in bigger cities to see what kind of competition is already in place (in the fish field) (as far as I know there is little in fish takeaways - McDonald is not value for money and also not really a quality thing)

but in general i think it is a good idea and reckon it is a question of making it affordable enough to succeed with it - still you perhaps need some busy location especially with lots of professionals - I think it would be risky (somewhat risky to very risky) starting in some residential areas

They prefer to eat bottom feeding fish such as Carp. If that can be battered and served with chips you will do very well indeed.

błeeee - you don't know what you're saying

a good fish and chips can't be actually beaten by anything Polish in its field (anything as simple and affordable at least)

What English arrogance?

like that - do you have microwaves in Poland? do you have cars in Poland? do you have roundabouts in Poland?

these have a merit to themselves and should have their following here
but you (in my opinion) should have more variety icluding local types (say fish salads) to be successful

it perhaps would be adviseable to contact people who were running these old-style 'fish bars' (Bar rybny) to consult them on the menus (or somebody else informed enough) with one caveat that the tastes do change as generations go - what worked well with me and my elders perhaps will not with younger generations

as for cod - it is caught in Baltic too - I am not sure if in quantities enough to fill the Polish market - don't know about plaice but flounder is also available from Polish baltic fisheries

Well no its not exotic and its not re-inventing the wheel but thats not what im asking is it!
How do you think a proper English fish and chip shop would fair in Poland?

with ever expanding takeaway popularity in Poland fish-and-chips could do well in a couple of bigger cities in Poland (especially if it is not very conservatively English), some obstacles should be taken into consideration though - the scarcity (and so also the price) of some of fish types on the Polish market for example -

there were "Bar rybny"s before (late commie times) in many bigger cities in Poland (fish bars with service like in milk bars (so self-service)) and they were quite popular - they acted as takeaways or fish retail also though no fish were sold raw there as far as I can remember - they also had no meals (specially) designed to be eaten in the open, on one's way etc)

History / Weapons of WWII (Poland and other countries) [239]

f the German high command was even slightly competent then the Russians would of stood no chance,

it was not the incompetence of the high command - only Hitler's interfering in war plans - as for incompetence Russians were much less competent

T-34

could take on every German tank including the Tiger.

hmm - with it's short low velocity short range 76,2mm gun T34 stood no chance with Tiger (unless in big numerical advantage) - there were engagements were a couple of Tigers were able to destroy over 50 t-34s - only the uparmed t34-85 version could have a go at Tiger though the 85mm cannon still was significantly inferior to the 88mm of Tiger (in effective range, velocity, precision) - the thing was Russians had tanks galore during this phase of the war (they actually had tanks galore all through the wartime and currently too ;)

and it's true that Russian valued their own tanks much higher than lend-lease Shermans - for a whole range of reasons including better armour

History / Weapons of WWII (Poland and other countries) [239]

M4A3 (as far as I know) main gun (and 76,2 instead of 75mm) longer than in the original version (differnt turret too I reckon) was an excellent piece of artillery - very precise and quite powerful too - I read a book by a Polish armour officer from the Anders's army on his Italian exploits - a battalion of these (M4A3) could fire such a precise and consistent salvos Polish artillery officers were amazed - it could easily be used as mobile infantry support artillery but of course were a match to german middle tanks too - the book is also a tribute to British armour training quality - the author trained with the elite troops of the 8th army in Egypt (his name was Bohdan Tymieniecki)

btw there is a situation described in the book where a Panther has been disabled by a single shot from the Sherman from quite a distance (well they actually had great deal of luck cause the shot smashed the Panther's radio antenea which burned the whole electric system of the Panther)

the panzershreck was a hell of a weapon - that's true - and so bloody cheap too - they eventually even started to work on a anti-aircratf sort of homing missile launcher (such Kraut Schtinger ;)

UK, Ireland / Cheap calls to the UK from Poland [30]

Telegrosik cards is what I use to call abroad cheaper - one can buy it almost in every little shop selling press - they have English language service too I believe - calling a landline in most of Europe costs around 30 gr + the local connection to their gateway

Language / Polish or any Slavic language key to any other Slavic languages? [126]

something similar to Russian 'rano utro' means tomorrow morning in Polish ('jutro rano')

and both rano and (j)utro have different meaning in Polish and Russian

the meaning of 'utro' shifted in Polish and retained it's original value in Russian and Macedonian

it shifted same wise in Czech and guess also Slovak 'zitra' = tomorrow - comes from 'utro'

btw tomorrow also developed from 'morning' as did morgen (morgen am Morgen)

'(j)utro' btw comes from the same root as latin 'austral'

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

oh man - Czechs were desperate to have this territory - they would use any pretext to get hold of it - and it seems this was just a pretext (the territory had strategic value - the only rail connection from Czech republic to Slovakia (then) and also the coal deposits - after gaining control they instituted quite intensive czechisation policies (don't know the details) - there is some sort of bad feelings now in Zaolzie towards street names in Polish only recently introduced which are being devastated - there is still around 60 thousand strong Polish minority there in spite of czechisation policies that were in place for some 60 years

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

done some reading:

it appears during the Munich crisis Poland was approached by the British diplomacy to enter a large anti-German block (including the British (don't know about the French but seems obvious), Czechoslovakia and baltic states) but minister Beck did not react

then it was all too late

btw Poles did not trust Czechoslovaks because they had strong ties with the Soviet Union, as far as I can remember they did not want any help from Poland itself but rather wanted Poland to let the Soviet troops through its territory to their support - Poles feared this and it's not completely obvious that it was 100 per cent reasonable fear

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

Germany would have won the war if not for invading the USSR?',

quite naive - the Soviets were preparing to conquer Europe - at the outbreak of German-Soviet war they had guess double the amount of tanks, and perhaps also double the amount of war planes - Hitler just managed to gain initiative and this only because Stalin held Hitler for an idiot and would not believe the Germans would attack the SU while presented with many intelligence sources that clearly showed Germans were preparing for the attack

It was never about you as the people but about the power structure in Europe.
Just a pawn...

yes I believe this - even though Churchill really intended to and tried to stop the Soviet advance into the Middle Europe (proposed landing in Balkans and not in France - but Roosevelt has been already strongly influenced by Stalin (trusted Stalin - due to the events that took place before the Teheran conference)

One bully invading another country about disputed lands.
The bigger bully get's away with it usually..

something doesn't fit here - why didn't Poland take say whole Moravia ???

the lands in question would have probably fallen into the German hands had Poland not demanded them and sent troops to occupy them after the Czech government withdrew its military and police from the area (following Polish ultimatum)

having said that i still think it was a grave mistake not to fully support Czechs and at least try to form an alliance with them against the German expansion - frankly speaking I have no idea wether there were any serious attempts at that and who failed

Saar offensive.

yeah heheh - they committed a whole of one division didn't they and well went into the German territory the whole 5 miles :) oh and the next they withdrew - must be the Gerries outflanked them ;)

if France and England would attack Germany the WWII
would be over in two weeks,

well this is of course too optimistic - but still there was a chance Germans would stop the invasion had the French committed significant forces to attack Germany (don't know the realities of the British but guess British airforces (znaczy RAF) could be involved pretty soon too (were there the will)

it is good to point out that the Soviets waited until 17th of September - the planned date of massive French offensive - before they invaded Poland - had the allies really started an offensive God knows (or he doesn't as well) wether the Soviets would get involved

defending Poland from fascists

it wasn't the goal of the leadership even if the Soviet (Russian or whatever) soldiers themselves believed so

America - LOL. Religion infects U.S politics like a cancer. The rest of the world, Europe especially, can only point and laugh at America's inability to separate Church and State... even though it's in their constitution.

I think you don't understand something - why should one separate himself from what he believes in public life - there is no problem of separation from the church - don't think any church has much influence on American politics - it is just people who have some strong beliefs and act based upon them in the politics

Language / Polite forms in Polish vs English [49]

Niech pan siada. is not very polite

Proszę usiąść (never Proszę Pan(i) usiąść) is polite enough

Czy mógłby Pan usiąść is very polite

things are changed by intonation especially when accompanied with a grimace - even the most polite can be turned around this way - by I guess this is no novelty for you - such manouvers aren't that common in Polish though

Proszę usiąść sounds more polite than Proszę siadać (as addressed to a single person)

Language / Polite forms in Polish vs English [49]

Niech mógłby pan (Pan) zamknąć drzwi? = (roughly) Would the gentleman be so kind as to close the door?

niech mógłby is not real Polish Marku

Czy mógłby Pan... is ok

Niech Pan zamknie to okno - is much less polite

There are also ways in Polish for a sort of mock politeness:

Czy raczyłby Pan zamknąć to okno? - this was perhaps very polite in the ages past (but also indicated somewhat lower position of the person who asked) - now it is considered overly polite and thus used to mean something a bit different (for example that someone is doing something not appriopriate and it is expected of him/her to stop it/conform)

the topic can be continued - by ich habe keine Lust mehr ;)

Life / Which brand of Mosquito repellant would you recommend (Warsaw), or... [22]

Do you believe that?

yeah I believe that - there is no way a mosquito can stop the blood to enter it's body after it inserts this little tube into your body unless it pulls it out - you can even make mosquitos explode on your skin - you need to pull your skin to the sides with your fingers so much so that the mosquito's tube is stuck in your skin and unable to pull this little tube out - I haven't succeeded with that but know guys who did (not all parts of the body are suitable)

Language / Future tense with bawić się [34]

pod kinem - next to a/the cinema, by a/the cinema, pod kino - (in)to the vicinity of a/the cinema

W drodze do szkoły codziennie przechodzę pod kinem.

pod Kołem - in vicinity of Koło (a town in the middle of Poland), pod Koło - (in)to the vicinity of Koło

of course the most basic meaning of pod is under - pod stołem, pod stół - under a/the table - pod stół used when you move something (or yourself) under the table

there are some idiomatic structures - 'pod kluczem' for example ('locked')

'pogoda pod psem' - nasty weather literally under a dog
