USA, Canada / Feminine surname endings in America? [48]

But is it a law or just a cultural rule? Must a women do it?

neither.. it's a linguistic rule.. it's the feminine form..

Now I relly don't know what the rules for a woman born in Canada as Anna Kowalski would be if she wanted to get a Polish passport.

kowalska

Ok, but try puting that on an official form over here and it wouldn't be accepted, the clerk or computer will reject it as a different name.

kind of.. a bit of an explanation and it's not a problem

They even change others' names when refering to them??! Now that's just getting crazy! :D

poles do to

Having gone through this incredibly frustrating process recently, government bureaucrats WOULD NOT ALLOW me to take the feminine form of my surname (and yeah, Canadians are actually familiar with the term), even though I speak the language and use the feminine form in the Polish community..

on polish docs or canadian ones? if polish and you have polish paperwork that specifies the "£" then that's just weird..

Yep. We don't play that over here.

like i said, kind of.. both of my parents use their own forms and it doesn't seem to be an issue whatsoever... but sometimes people are surprised when i tell them who my mom is as they don't recognize our names as being the same..

Life / My own thoughts about life in Poland (have lived here for two years) [133]

And they're the ones who will have nothing to come back to.

you just admitted that wages suck bad... opportunity? really? i really couldn't find sh.t and i am in engineering/construction field.. there were a couple of "opportunities" but i don't know if i could have survived on such meager pay..

and someone mentioned the roads in Irq and Afgh being better.. lol.. right.. rofl.. they are not, i assure you..

move to the UK to work in low paid employment?

wait a minute, you just said they move to make quick cash.. didn't you? and maybe being a waiter actually pays more in UK then a degreed job in PL..

someone who went to the UK to wash dishes is not going to be at any particular advantage at all.

who would think that that kind of experience would be relevant? i doubt someone with a uni degree..

Many were just uneducated and, thus, at an instant disadvantage.

shouldn't it be that way though? seems natural to me.

No

no? lol

and they'll invest it in roads and better infrastructure

poland got a boat load of EU funds for infrastructure.. and they are buikding the expressways, no? secondary roads are secondary.. it'll take a while

wow, who do you hang around with, Sean? Most ppl born in 80s were brought up on hip hop music, so it's quite extraordinary to be bashed because of Marvin Gaye...

besides, reggae is big so was or maybe still is rap.. definitely more blacks make that kind of music then whites..

I used to confuse ruchać and ruszać a lot to.

they mean the same thing.. movement.. lol

Mind you, just who are the idiots paying for Sushi here? I look at Japanese prices in comparison and can't help but laugh ;)

Japan is surrounded by seas and sushi is their thing..

------------

you know, this thread is actually one of the most objective ones here, especially as of late.. good job OP.

Life / My own thoughts about life in Poland (have lived here for two years) [133]

many posters here seem to be very sensitive to criticism of Poland. Also, they tend to be Polish ex-pats rather than Polish people living here in Poland.

the overly sensitive ones are, for the most part, the poles living in PL.. many that haven't experienced anything but PL..

the other stuff as hard as it may be for many to hear/read, i observe the same. but you may get crucified, as you already know.

USA, Canada / Feminine surname endings in America? [48]

Example: People in Poland Would think that Victoria Kowalski would be an transvestite if she would visit her ancestral country since she is using the masculin form in her surname... Is that fair?

who gives a crap since she doesn't "live" in PL..

Btw, in US we don't use the term 'surname' so much, so it's not that familiar. We generally just say first name/ last name.

yes, i am guessing HS was hard for you, wasn't it? lol

(-calling petty leg humper Plk123 for another cheap shot!)

see above. haha

She has to by law??

law or not, female always gets a feminine everything.. same as in espanol
see mafketis above for exceptions.

Kinda weird that a woman changes her last name and not even to her new husband's name, technically.

technically it IS his name.. just the fem form of it.

girl names must end in 'A'...

not always.. similar exceptions to the surname ones.

Law / How does Health Care in Poland work? [16]

you already are Polish in this case, so you just do a simple (takes about 3 weeks) procedure of verifying your nationality

still has to be done regardless.. what about zameldowanie? did that ever get striken down?

i

it's illegal for you not to have a "zameldowanie".

i guess not.. wtf?

I think he went on his Canadian passport and didn't have any trouble getting it. I'll have to ask him about that.

you may or may not have any trouble but as someone said before, it is illegal for you, as a pole, to enter PL on other papers then the PL passport or DO.

I'm sure they'll welcome me with open arms, even with my Canadian passport. I'm Polish! No one turns away family ;)

they won't turn you back but detention may not be the fun it's not cracked up to be.

It is just a number, not a card, but it is put on Polish ID.

and you can get that through the embassy too.. but of course that takes some time

UK as it is not in Schengen zone

he's in canada

Dowód osobisty bez zameldowania

to get the ID one doesn't need to registration (zameldowac)
polish citizens living abroad have the right and not an obligation to possess DO
according to so and so articles people without registration of residence, like people living abroad, DO is issued (only?) at Warsaw Srodmiesce (central) office.

Law / How does Health Care in Poland work? [16]

1. When I move back, I hear I'm supposed to register for resident status. Does anyone know how I can go about doing that?

your folks will know and they will direct you to where you need to go

5. Any hospitals around Skierniewice? Are public hospitals modern, or are they sub-par in some way?

of courdse there are.. poland isn't some freaking 3rd world country.. the hospitalsk are nothing like in Canada, i can assure you of that.

7. If I have prescription from my doctor in Canada, will they accept it in Poland?

i doubt it

as to the rest, why not ask your family?

UK, Ireland / The slow, whiny death of British Christianity [86]

IV: You shall try to share that which you have in abundance with those who haven't.

sounds like communism

XI: You shall never speak on my behalf, and not answer any questions to which you don't know the answer.

that surely would kill this forum, wouldn't it? lol

Life / What's the spiritual atmosphere like in Poland these days? [12]

there are a few protestant churches in PL.. presbyterian specifically? i doubt it as that's an american branch of christianity.

Is it possible to find people practicing ... non-church based spiritualities?

where would you like to find these people if they aren't in a church? having just said that, paganism is on the rise everywhere..

God DOES NOT EXIST

and you must be one of his followers if that even makes any sense to you.. i'm guessing you may not understand the basics of science.. good luck with that..

Travel / Getting back to Poland on an old ID. [15]

2. outdated passport - you can come back on it. If I remember well it is even written on the passport!

yes but if one is crossing a border that will check it, the acceptance of such expired document is obviously up to them.

in conclusion: keep your passport valid

or don't plan on traveling..

Science and faith are not diametrically opposed, no matter how much you want them to be.

they aren't? hmm.. that's interesting as i haven't seen one shred of scientific evidence that god exists in reality.

Travel / Gniezno - the hardest city to get around? [3]

"The Nest"

btw. the nest = gniazdo.

I've read much of the city via the internet, but was hoping somebody could share personal insight of Gniezno. Opinions, experiences, places to recommend, etc.

there just isn't much there.

USA, Canada / Feminine surname endings in America? [48]

but their female children born in the new country take the father's name.

again, not necessarily

But how can a zero cultured redneck understand something like that?

what's that have to do with anything? it has more to do with the english language and tradition.

sirname

surname, you dolt

USA, Canada / Feminine surname endings in America? [48]

didn't we already talk about this before? it was your thread too.. but it's a preference, just like everything else in america..

however, the rule is probably written in law.

no

Yes there is law against it, I read it in a book by Davies in Europe: east and west.

not at all.. there is no such law

Home cooking is more expensive

once again, not at all.... not per portion.. for the most part.. you can't compare a burger to a t-bone..

Or have I got that arse over elbow?

yes

Of course that in Poland its more cost-effective to cook at home. We have cheap igredients so cooking by your own really saves money.

the same in the USA

I heard that in the USA its more expensive to cook at home than eating fast food, is that true?

not when you compare "apples" with "apples", as i said earlier

Fatties often just can't afford the more healthier but also more expensive fruits and veggies.

not true.. that's a myth.. it's just a lazy choice..

why on earth would anyone want McDonalds, to pay more for fatty fast food?

i highlighted the main reason..

the life of an average Joe in US is not much better than in Poland.

it is what one makes of it.. life in the USA is much easier and cheaper, overall.

Australia is a winner on many fronts, including its democratic freedom

check that.. australia has quite limited freedoms as compared to the usa.. their government has a much stronger grip on their freedoms.

the healthy, organic, nutritious food is out of reach to the masses in the so called richest nation on earth.

that is not true at all; it's just a choice and many choose the convenience food over nutritional.
