History / A History of Gdansk, Poland [130]

learn basic history ,then open your mouth

I could tell you where Poles lived in Danzig - but you would be too ignorant to grasp it. It was a German city, and you can bleat like a flock of sheep. It wont change that fact. Free port or not.

History / A History of Gdansk, Poland [130]

the city of Gdańsk may be well said to have been placed within the borders of Poland drawn in this document.

Very interesting research Ziemowit. Wonderful, as far as origins go. I am a son of the Anglo-Saxon chief name of Snot, from the settlement of Snotengaham, as it was in Saxon times. However Nottingham has moved on since then, and was made famous throughout the world by Brian Clough and Nottingham Forest football club..The present city of Gdansk is built on Hanseatic trade in the same way, whether we like it or not. Bratwurst is making the clumsy point that the city is German built. Ain't that a fact.

no one from Solidarność had a good word to say for Walęsa.

Of course not. We all have seen the BBC documentaries from the 1990s. Nobody likes an egotist like Walesa. I don't know anything apart from what people/family have told me and what I saw on these programmes. Never read about the guy. He was as ill educated as many of those he was dealing with on the other side of that famous table, which might just have been why they were happier than dealing with him as a central negotiator than someone who spoke in academic gobbledygook.

I presume you have seen that picture on the table in room A2 of the Solidarity museum, where Kaczynski's face is highlighted and all others are blurred.

Ridiculous and dangerous revision of history and this country has obviously learnt nothing from Soviet occupation.

History / A History of Gdansk, Poland [130]

we had a remembrance here in my small town thousands turned up

Excellent. Good people. They are everywhere, otherwise we could wrap it all up and all leave again. I was referring to the retired coal miner, representing many, who was spoilt by communism - because he could see himself as "a little bit above others", and so never wanted to think for himself (hence the reference to the pumpkin and being content with his lot, yet he had the temerity to rant at Walesa re: the age old - and typically post communist - conspiracy theories).

No time for those people at all.

I was walking along the bank of the Motława

Good. Next time take a cycle, or my labrador and go for a really long walk, and you see that Gdansk, in real terms, is still quite ruinous. If Scottie (local poster) were around he would affirm to that I would guess. That is the real task facing someone like Adamowicz, and it really is a case of step by step. It was those pesky Russians wot dun it.

weren't you just saying that it will still be a big mess in 50 years.

Yes unfortunately. Seriously big money required. Take a walk on the waterfronts. We're talking hundreds of millions. Euros, that is. That's going to take some time......

Doug consistently uses Polish style rhetoric

And you employ a perceived haughty knowing style on every thread, but I won't hold it against you. I come here for an argument:)

you will be free to replace us with those in your opinion are more deserving.

Well, first of all Poles sneer at Walesa, when millions of them sat at home - did nothing to fight the system - and grew their pumpkins, and were ******** their pants they were so scared of the authorities (or thought that communism was alright in some ways). And now they sneer at Adamowicz.

The above two of which are worth more than the lot of them combined. Is that clear enough?

Gdansk has developed greatly since I've been visiting it over the last ten years

Yes, and great credit to the mayor! Whilst a great many other Polish cities, which were not levelled in war, remain utterly depressing places to work and live in, due in part to a lack of local initiative.

the millions of Poles who were murdered by the Germans and Russians in WWII.

Talking about perspective ( if we must), as well as those 3 million Polish civilians, you completely forgot to include the 3 million Polish jews murdered at the same time. You obviously needed reminding of that fact.

being destroyed by the allies, not by the Germans.

Actually..no....I'm sure you know the history better than I do BB but Gdansk was actually destroyed by the Soviets. Anybody from Gdansk will tell you that. The allies destroyed Konigsberg, but the Russians destroyed Danzig, by deliberate desecration.

And now the Russkis have Kalinigrad, a post socialist concrete hell-hole, whilst Poland has Gdansk, and Adamowicz was quite right to build ties with the cities' German past. The city needs any help it can get. Any business and inward investment is good; if you look at Gdansk from the air, and go behind the facades, the city will still be a big mess in 50 years; a young man in his early thirties had a vision and was elected city mayor at what was, on the face of it, a ridiculously young age, with the remit to create something from nothing. And he succeeded and then some.

Only the Poles could denigrate such achievement and this constantly moves me to despair how ******* lame those people are.

History / Israeli wants to wipe Poland off the map! [198]

So you are aware of the socio-political situation on the streets of England ? It's admirable that you take the bus, have done well, have learnt the language etc, but now you are also casting yourself as an expert on goings on in my homeland as well.

My word, you are a fountain of knowledge mafeketis. I take my hat off to you.

your overwhelming sense of intolerance towards people who do not conform to your views is more than amazing

Sorry - aren't you addressing Johnny. Dirk and the rest? I suggest you consult your notes as to racial and religious intolerance. Though, having said that I am fed up with this rabid catholic government who interfere with our lifestyle of course, forcing shops to close on a Sunday so they can get down on their hands and knees, but at the same time denying me being able to speak to the lads at Castorama and fit out my kitchen.

Said MPs have gofers to make their trips to Castorama for them. So I am intolerant towards those scum, yes.

History / Israeli wants to wipe Poland off the map! [198]

I was sure you had posted here before about you being Jewish.

Better ask Saul (or should I say Ziemowit, with his notes on every poster here who does not conform to his thinking). And it's difficult for a British person to comprehend the way that the next generation of Poles and Jews distrust each other, 75 years after the end of the war. It must be a case of familiarity breeds contempt. I'm more inclined to the view of Polish hysteria as to who has the greater victim role.

are you Jewish Doug ?

My religion is of no import, just as your sexual orientation is no interest, unless we were speaking from a legal framework or such. I was lucky to have decent caring parents who brought me up to be tolerant of others.....come to think of i though, my father disliked Jehovah's witnesses for some reason...... and his Polish jewish colleague was his closest friend until later years , when he started spouting death to the Arabs and such talk. (the Israeli - not my parent.....)

Hope that answers your inquiry: extremist Poles and extremist Israelis should be put in a dark room together.

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

A lot of retirement homes in Silesia have started advertisement in Germany.

You're having a laugh, right? I haven't been in a retirement home, but I've been in long stay Katowice hospitals no less than three times for pneumonia (the wonderful coal industry sponsored pollution...), and only the nuns in one particular hospital were pleasant and sympathetic to a degree. The rest of the nurses were like the one in "One flew over the cuckoos nest."

Wild horses wouldn't get me in a Polish retirement home, at the mercy of them potential sadists.

They turned in a whole lot more to the Nazis.....allegedly.

Yet they managed to save exponentially more Jews than died at the pogroms.

I think you would have problems citing the figures for that claim.

Jewish collaboration with the red army, bolsheviks

Of course a great many of them sympathised with communism. So would you if you lived in such poverty. And so did Poles. The Polish communist party was founded in Sosnowiec in the 1920s, unless my memory fails me:)

Travel / Visiting the Polish Balitic Sea coast in the Winter [30]

Miedzyzdroje.

Good choice. Been there in winter myself. Lots of Germans - so plenty going on in winter. At one time you could also go on the golf course; don't know about nowadays. Don't understand your question about Wolin. It's not a park as such, but open forest, beaches and lagoon. Open all year to animals of all species, including man:)

grooming gangs comprised of Muslim men?

Because the victims are dim enough to believe in the bling? Their parents should be arrested along with the perverts, for criminal neglect.

I'm not saying that the victims should be blamed, but the parents deffos should. My father was largely absent, but he did come up with the old chesnut "Never, on any account, accept sweets from strangers."

One memorable line, and I automatically followed his instructions. I realise this is a different age, but when my teenager put herself in danger I was right there to explain to her why she was out of order.

an irresistable opportunity

We know you're missing the mother country, and instead have to suffer living amongst all those Pakistanis. But do keep up. Most people in Poland with half a brain dropped the inferiority complex and "We're Polish and condemned" self loathing rhetoric when 1. Kisczak signed on the dotted line ending totalitarian rule, 2. When Poland joined NATO and then acceded to the EU.

But you're not in Poland, are you?
And, by the way, the Pakistanis were living in your area first. And their cuisine and restaurants are way better than anything Polish:) YOU are the immigrant (or your parents were).

the Russian version being correct.

If I were the Russians I would demand that all Polish pilots be retrained and first of all learn to follow the civil aviation rules: ergo - keep that cockpit door firmly locked, and don't open it on any account whatsoever for some suicidal general or populist president.

The wealthy will be moving out in droves to live in Poland bringing with them their wealth to build Poland into a utopia.

Will they Johnny? The land rents here as well as other factors mean that foreigners will not be flooding Poland any time soon, pretty though it be. The wealthy will stick to their Alpine hillside or Barcelona beachside - not Gorzow Wielkapolska - unless they are Polish retirees, like Dolno for example. Then I can see the attraction.

But foreigners, in this tedious environment for the rich, where they can't act it large? Don't think so somehow.

it was partially privatized.

And that is why Poland is still in such a mess in terms of infrastructure. Why would western European investors want to go all in , when the government insists on a controlling share? That's not a working full market economy.

Orlen was privatized about 2 decades ago

51 percent government owned, which was holding it back. I used to work at the Katowice office and was party to all the goings-on, SLD style. Are you trying to suggest that the government no longer "interferes" in its business?

Law / Can a foreigner appeal against prokurator (prosecutor) decision in Poland? [11]

Well, what is your definition of a fascist? Ziobro never takes council when he's off on a rant - he dictates, and makes himself look a fool. That's how I understand it. A matter of opinion? The OP asked who the minister of justice was. Being an obliging sort of chap, I answered him.
