USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

most of the stuff isn't Polish, period. Ricotta cheese with roasted lamb, salmon with dijon sauce, scallops and pesto pasta is not Polish. It sounds more like French food.

I have to feel sorry for Polish chefs. They take influences from surrounding areas to create something new and end up lambasted for not creating drab commie-era cuisine. The French hold the crown when it comes to euro food - flambe, saute etc all appropriated into English. In English restaurants you can't get Rhubarb crumble and custard anymore, it's now called rhubarb crumble and creme anglaise.

Poland doesn't appear to have colonial spice trails to claim as tradition but what is traditional fayre now was once something original and new. Black pepper thrown into near on all British dishes still only hails from the east, yet it is doubtful there are any households in the UK that doesn't have it in the larder or in many processed foods. When someone talks of hamburgers, do you connote them with Americans or Germans if you ignore culinary history?

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Now, what's the English name for obiad - a meal eaten between 2:00 and 4:00p.m.?

A late-lunch.
What's wrong with sandwicz. It was a casual creation by the Earl of Sandwich, so bears his name.
Kanapka sounds like it is taken from the French Canape (couch).

go to any avg. polish family's house and you'll surely see what effects "one-thousand years of Polish culinary tradition" had on their dinner plates.

Many are probably going about it all wrong in the case of the bbq joint it should have called itself PoloniaBBQ and it would have done better to just have a flag (preferably with the eagle) a bit of Chopin in the background and most importantly in ethnic restaurants, fusion foods such as the menu offered by Boletus. Just one variety of hunters stew?? There should be a classic(matka's), and several regional ones, just for the sake of marketing, simply inventions of a creative chef. If it's good they'll come back to try another variety.

Repeat customers are necessary for survival.

PS. Never have fat waitresses...

History / Why did communism in Poland fail? [180]

and that excuses all future writings from paragraphs?

Nothing wrong with that being one paragraph. That is how people wrote before the dumbed-down English used on the internet.

The book is a good fictional account of the realities of living under such a regime in which the OP has an interest.

The Autumn of the Patriach was written without paragraphs. It's about an atrocious, ruthless dictator and suppression of the masses...

Love / Polish women USED TO BE much more attractive: [162]

Eating too much sugar -the excess turns into fatty acids and is stored as fat in the body.

You meant to say too much sugar or any carbohydrate turns to fat, I'm sure. Fatty acids such as omega-3, are very beneficial (essential in the sense they are not synthesised by the body) and is conclusively tested to show a improvement in children's academic performance, as well as preventing heart disese and some cancers.

Please, parents, don't avoid giving your kid's fatty acids. if you can afford to, go out of your way to supplement their diets with omega3, . They essential fatty acids are as important in one's diet as vitamins and minerals.

UK, Ireland / Poles in the UK not a problem as far as i can tell [79]

The problem with England is the Class System which still exists in spite of the fact that many of you still deny it. Your Government isn't laid back, it doesn't give a rump about the working class English.

Work / Polish attitude towards promotions at work [11]

I have also been accused of "running away"

Buy them all a big box of chocolates(leave it where all can gain access), with a note thanking them for their support and confidence.

Britain will always have a minority of the majority that looks at the minority of a minority and sees them as the majority of the minority, if you catch my drift.

Life / Is it me or do people "seem" to live longer in Poland? Life expectancy among Poles. [52]

Recently back from my annual visit to Poland it struck me again how many old people, I mean really old people, seem to be alive and kicking.

When I'm out and about between 9-5 on a week day locally, the wrinklies seem to take over the streets.

Across most species, not just human, females live longer. I vaguely recall it was claimed to have something to do with birthing and cell repair.

USA, Canada / Moving from United Kingdom to USA. Is it worth it? [136]

I can't knock London.. never have been there.

Quite a few graduates went to Canada notably in Games programming, pretty much killed the industry over in the UK. A relation from Cn was over here(UK) last week and said his sales market, microsoft hardware, was dying out as Canadians were buying from US websites. Last time I was in Canada staying with a relative, an environmental officer knocked at his door and said he would have to mow his front lawn as the grass was too long! It was only about 3 inches high.

Prince Hamlet does: "I have heard of your paintings, well enough. God hath given you one face, and you make yourself another." (Hamlet act 3 scene 1)

The antagonist of the Prince, Claudius also compared cosmetics to his own deceits.

You stated in #92 the differences are in religious belief.
I am not talking about the law but ethics. An ethnically Egyptian Jew who renounces his religion, how is the right to that land his, and not Palestinians. You simply change the meaning of Jew to suit yourself.

History / Poland and Orientalism [115]

But to say that a nation can't have it's own religion is an arbitrary statement that makes no sense.

Just my personal view is that it is against free thought that I would have to be like the monkey in The Jungle Book where 'we all say so, so it must be true' thinking must be adhered to. If someone is to say, where I am(England) they no longer want to be in the church as the community is larger and not represented fully, that should be accepted without them being considered less a-part of this nation.

As I quoted above #94 the ethnicity is from the exodus from slavery in Egypt, wouldn't Egypt be your homeland?
My ex-boss, a Polish/Russian Jew, claimed his ethnicity is White British, entirely acceptable to me, but why do you need to claim he is an Israelite when he himself denies this?

Israel is the Jewish state

The notion that a nation is also a religion is the primitive racism of Taliban and a call to terrorism in every instance.

History / Poland and Orientalism [115]

Probably been said over and over...

nkusa.org/activities/Statements/20090102.cfm

"Orthodox Rabbis representing Torah-True Jews and Rabbinical authorities will be demonstrating their outrage at the Zionist state of "Israel" and its atrocities against the inhabitants of Gaza. What has caused a people to fall to such levels of depravity? Come and hear our message! Zionism and the state of "Israel" is expressly forbidden according to the Torah. We are forbidden to make any attempts to leave the Godly decreed exile; We are forbidden to oppress any people and we are required to be loyal citizens in every country in which we reside, we are required to emulate God - we are to be kind and compassionate.

Judaism is a religion of thousands of years. Zionism is a relatively new movement of over little over a hundred years, created by non-religious Jews who aspired to transform the religion into nationalism and have rebelled continually against the Almighty's commandments. This has culminated in the terrible atrocities being perpetrated against the people of Gaza today.

Law / Which currency is better for Poland and the Eurozone? Euro or Zloty? [36]

yea, interesting, but how could this scenario possibly arise.

More on the expected disater looming over the EU and US, it is a pessimistic outlook to claim 1:1. The two havens would be Swissy and Yen, imo.

If you search you will find the view in many places over the past months, A typical article:

businessweek.com/news/2011-07-18/franc-is-most-expensive-currency-as-taylor-sees-euro-parity.html

Geoff Kendrick, head of European currency strategy at Nomura International Plc in London, raised his forecasts for the franc this month, partly because Swiss banks are increasing their assets denominated in the local currency. Nomura predicts the euro will buy 1.2 francs by year-end, from a prior estimate of 1.4 francs. An appreciation to 1.10 over the next three months "sounds reasonable and likely," Kendrick said.

"It's definitely possible that we could see parity reached this year if the euro crisis continues," he said.

"The franc will remain a strong currency for a very long time because the credit crisis in Europe isn't going away anytime soon," said Sebastien Galy, a senior foreign-exchange strategist at Societe Generale SA in London. "We are in a global crisis of growth and in that environment balance sheets that are clean are appealing. That's the case with Switzerland."

The euro has strengthend today but still appears as a retracement from thursday. May reach 1.1560 and then sink again from a technical perspective.

UK, Ireland / What do you hate about England and English people? [142]

Why I dont like SOME English people.

You will find there are English people who don't like other English for the same reasons as yours. The point on BoB is used to inflame.
