Love / Do some Polish women prefer older men for money? [57]

Do some Polish women prefer older men for money?

You must think so or you wouldn't have posted this question. Why did you have to single out the Polish women? If your theory is true then wouldn't it apply to women from other nationalities too?

Women often get the "taste" for older men because let's face it, they grow up earlier than we men do. When they develop the interest for the opposite sex we men quite often are still in the burp and fart stage. Ok, so some of us never leave that stage but nevertheless, women start dating those "older" guys because they feel like they have more in common with them than with their classmates. Maybe that preference tends to stick later in their lives? Who knows.

However, as I said IF you really wanted to know then you shouldn't have singled out Polish women only. Women are women, IF there's a correlation there, which I doubt there is, it would've been very similar to women from other countries.

Your question should really say: "do some people prefer older partners?" "If so, is it for the money or something else?"

I say people because I'm sure there are men who'd love to marry a well-off woman and never have to work again. Early on in my career I moved in with a lady who was making way more money than I did. I didn't do it for the money, I did it because I loved her. Several years later my compensation levels started to accelerate and now I was making way more money than she did. Again, she didn't stay with me for the money but rather because she loved me. Later on our hectic lives took a toll on our relationship and we split up and guess what, we didn't split up for the money either, no one "got" anything out of the split, besides two broken hearts that is.

My point is, if you come up with a theory, try to see how that theory would work for the "other side". More often than not you'll realize that in many ways we are more similar than we are different.

Love / American woman falls in love with a charming Polish man upon his visit to the U.S. [36]

Sojourn,

He meant to say you're bothering him and I bet you he showed your emails to his girlfriend or wife who then "encouraged" him to write you and to be stern, to cut off the correspondence.

Some words might have slighly different meaning in other languages, next time you check into a hotel look on the backside of the "Do Not Disturb" sign, I bet you it says "No Moleste" in Spanish. Doubtful anyone had planned to "molest" the guests. LOL

As far as having a failed marriage behind you - welcome to the club, this situation had nothing to do with that, you're absolutely normal and many people get divorced nowadays for many reasons so don't been bring it up into this discussion, simply not relevant.

What is relevant is the fact you tried to contact him, that you were very polite and nice to him the whole time. I say kudos to you for doing that; it didn't work out as he's probably married and maybe he should've indicated that a little sooner but either way, I think it's great a woman for a change has the balls or rather ovaries to express her interest. Nothing wrong with that at all and don't let this get you down.

Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

But again, it is the force of tradition and pride that makes us hold to this purely historical name. If it had not been for tradition and pride, why should the British keep their sovereign rather than try to behead her or him in front of Buckingham Palace and say (not-so-)proudly: We are republican! Down with the Queen! Vive la République britannique!

Aha, but that's what I'm talking about. If it's the force of tradition and pride that makes Poles use the "old school" name of Rzeczpospolita than show that tradition and pride in other languages too.

Here I believe Common- (Pospolita) -wealth (Rzecz) would prevail when used in the English language.

On the other hand, if we say Republika Polska than the Republic of Poland would be more appropriate.

True - but the bit of postwar European history...

My point is that the term Rzeczpospolita is a very unique word, even in the Polish language and as such it should be cherished even when it's translated to other tongues.

I'm sorry, the origins might be the very same Latin words but Rzeczpospolita and Republic just isn't the same. However both Rzeczpospolita and Commonwealth are more descriptive and word by word translations from Latin into Polish and English. So my contention is - Let's keep it unique in other languages too.

Of course, who cares what I or anyone else on PF thinks but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

Oh, this is indisputable. Poland's bad deeds during the II RP are a drop in the ocean compared to Russia - but really, my point is that Polish history isn't exactly "clean" either.

Agree. Of course, there is no country on earth that can be said to have a perfectly "clean" history.

(my home country? Sadly, my home country is a cold wasteland populated by Celts, Picts and a few Nordic types for good measure, all mixed together. Only time we ever saw any Slavs was after 2004 ;))

I'm sorry, I thought I saw someone referring to you as a Russian and I assume that was the case. My appologies. (not that being a Russian is a negative thing per se)

Well, first of all - you have the problem that Poland borders the "Commonwealth of Independent States".

Delph, does anyone in the world, except the neighboring countries even know what CIS is? Really?

Then you have the way that the country is clearly described as a Republic in the Constitution - why create conflict?

We already established that Republic and Commonwealth originate from Latin, Res Publica, the latter is merely a verbatim translation into the English language.

It's dull, sure. But Commonwealth wouldn't be so good either - it would imply the presence of some sort of monarchy.

Why? "Common" - "Publica" remember?

Love / Appropriate Wedding Gift for a Polish girlfriend of several months? [37]

DO NOT send money. In Polish culture that is insulting. Send flowers.

HUH?? My relatives have been to 4 weddings in the last few years (Wroclaw area) and they said in all 4 weddings the couples getting married received fairly large sums of money and gift certificates from their friends and families. Maybe it's a regional thing?

Flowers is a given at all weddings.

Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

Delph - sure, Poland made numerous mistakes but the comparison is very flawed. Your old home country of Russia will always be the most murderous country in the world, most murderous nation in the human kind. Whether ruled by the tsar or by the commissar the shear amount of plundering, rape, torture and murder committed in Russia would make Adolf Hitler blush. Either way, getting off the subject.

Magdalena - you just don't give up either. Both Republika AND the more literal in Polish Rzeczpospolita have the same Latin origin, in English the translations became Republic AND the more literal in English Commonwealth.

My contention was and still is that since the Polish people chose a more literal, descriptive name of the country in the Polish language aka. Rzeczpospolita they should've used more literal translations in other foreign languages too, in English the proper translation would've been the Commonwealth of Poland. Same meaning but more aesthetically and phonetically pleasing also more of a verbatim translation in each specific language. Don't know what Commonwealth would be in German but for example in Swedish it could be translated as "Det Polska Samväldet" sounds logical and somewhat poetic. What's wrong with sharing the special meaning of the word Rzeczpospolita? Republic of Poland sounds so blasé.

Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

(always thought it was odd that the PRL used Rzeczpospolita rather than Republika - you'd think they would have wanted to have a "clean break" with the past)

Unlike Russia (and Germany too although they took responsibility for their actions) Poland has nothing to be ashamed of in her past. No reason for a clean break.

Plk - what republics does the Commonwealth of Virginia consists of? How about the Commonwealth of Kentucky? ...Massachusetts? ...Pennsylvania?

Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

So, in other words, there are many republikas in the world, but there
is only one Rzeczpospolita. Such is the contemporary usage anyway.

I see your point, so basically republika and rzeczpospolita have the same Latin origin and commonwealth is derived from the same Latin words in English. Well, to me the Commonwealth of Poland sounds so infinitely better than the Republic of Poland but it is what it is. I think they should've used Rzeczpospolita for the Polish speaking population and Commonwealth for the English speaking world, why do they have to use the same term everyone else is using? I think PRL spoiled it for me, even though it was Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa many people said it was Polska Republika Ludowa because after all it was the effect of Soviet Army's rape of the prewar Rzeczpospolita.

Bzi, you've completely missed the point. Varsovian is having a bit of a laugh at the expense of almost, but not quite well informed foreigners' views of Poland - not the actual history as it was.

Well, I haven't been in Poland for decades but I'm in touch with many family members who travel to Poland several times a year, so I'm not as ignorant of Rzeczpospolita III as you'd think.

Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

Res = thing, object
Publica = public, common

Again, you're explaining the origine of the word republic or republika. The word rzeczpospolita doesn's seem to come even close to the Latin res publica.

Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

Not really - it's a direct calque of the Latin Res Publica.

Well, yes Res Publica is for the word Republic, Republika but as for as Rzeczpospolita couldn't "pospolita" be translated as "common" and "rzecz" as an item, object, article? Thus an object of the common people, the Commonwealth?

Language / Rzeczpospolita Polska - translation? [42]

I wonder why the term Rzeczpospolita Polska becomes the Republic of Poland in English?

Wouldn't the term Commonwealth of Poland make more sense? Both as a literal translation but also in the historical context? For example the Polish-Lithuanian Union was called the Commonwealth of Poland & Lithuania in the English speaking world.

So why is it Republic today?

News / Poland building an empire (instead of a nation)? [67]

Poland is making the same mistake it made in the 1920's-30's, getting in border disputes with all it's neighbor's. By 1939 it wasn't just Germany that invaded Poland it was Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine, Czechs. All of its neighbors piled in. Belorussian domestic politics is none of Poland's business. Poland should Butt out.

Congratulations, you just got praised by one the worst russian thugs on this forum.
This is the kind of scum that's praising you:

More than 30000 Russians were tortured there by polish authorities. And when you, my friends, are claiming for justice in the case of Katyn, you should remember these victims too.

I think that Katyn is the righteous retaliation for your own faults.

Oh, please don't exaggerate the fact. As you possibly know, the shot in head is better death than being starved to death. You may consider this as a mercy.

Tuchola - roots of Katyn?

You must be proud mr quisling. People like you make me want to throw up. I bet whenever yoiu see a person getting beat up you just look the other way and pretend that you don't see anything, right? You should butt out of PF and join surrenderforums.com or KissRussianAss.com instead.

Got it out of your previous comment (ie. Lithuania not part of NATO, really?) and some of your past comments where you advocate not giving a f&*k about Poland's neighbors because you supposedly care about Poland. Yeah right, let's not upset Russia, a typical obamanista attitude.

News / Poland building an empire (instead of a nation)? [67]

CP - there's no such thing as knowing too much of your history! That's like saying being too smart is bad for your acne.

You're a typical example of the Chicago socialist elite, or someone who views himself as better than anyone else. Clueless and most of all selfish. Chicago should change its nickname from "the windy city" to "the corrupt and paranoid city" or "obamanistan" if you prefer. Crooks of the World - Unite!

First of all Lithuania IS part of NATO and the EU too in case you've missed it. Their special ops troops have been fighting by our side in Afghanistan for example, several Lithuanian Air Force reps have visited several of our bases in the last few months. Ukraine WILL become part of NATO and there is Ukrainian military delegation in the US as we speak. They'll keep things on the lowdown to avoid antagonizing the Russians in Ukraine but eventually it will happen, same with Georgia.

You are a selfish person who pretends to care about Poland but in reality you don't give a **** about anyone but yourself. The people of Poland needed help in the past and fortunately the leadership of most Western nations disagreed with your mentality of appeasement and surrender. It took many years but eventually Poland freed herself from the communist plague and the Russian hegemony. Today Belarus deserves the same help Poland got in the past. Ukraine and Lithuania need to be pulled closer to the West and the Polish government is doing the right thing.

This is you ->

News / Poland building an empire (instead of a nation)? [67]

They can't because unlike you most Poles know their history. Poland isn't building an empire (how silly to even imply that) but rather expanding existing alliances and deepening the friendship ties with her neighbors, a very critical aspect of any nation's well being. Russia has been Poland's archenemy and it will always be Poland's archenemy. Befriending other nations who too are exposed to the often belligerent Russian neighbor makes perfect sense. When Finland was attacked by Soviet Union many Swedes and Danes volunteered to help defend Finland from the Russian murderous thug army. It only makes sense for Poland to create as many and as strong alliances as possible in case yet another Putin Führer takes over.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

...He wants me to meet him at the skating rink. Wow. I decide to go and him him face to face...

Ms. Aphrodite - if he is a "Misiu" then are you his "niedźwiedzica"?

It takes two to tango (except if you have Geico car insurance ;) ...
...

...and personally I'd never go out with a lady who's married ...unless her husband was to join us and then it'd be somewhat awkward... ;)

So maybe this idea of you being pursued by a "stranger", the intoxicating thought of a man finding our mighty-aphrodity irresistible is clouding your judgment?

We men are often accused of being less than honest with our female counterparts yet we do not hold the keyes to the golden gates, you women do. Please note, I am NOT insinuating that anything was to happen between you and the married man (and it wouldn't have been any of my my business anyways).

However since you're sharing your daily life with us, the voyeuristic part of me wants to understand why a woman would even accept an invite from a married guy to go skating with her??

If I was you, (and I think I'd look purty good in pink ;) my reply to him would've been something like "I'd love to go skating with you, bring your wife and your kids and we'll have a blast!"

So please educate me on the female psyche as I'm obviously failing the "Women's Intricacies 101" course.

News / Poland leads nations in raising 90 million euros for Belarus opposition [73]

And how come that the U.S ain't giving the Belarusians the same support like they did to the Poles in the 80's?

Obama is a Russian appease'nik, he simply doesn't care as long as his reelection chances improve. For that the unemployment rate in the US must drop, that is his only concern. Socialists of the world, unite! lol

How more idiotic can one get.Poland seems to want Russia on its door.

How more cowardly can you get southern? Change your screen name from southern to surrender. There was a time when other nations helped Poland to get rid of the communist disease, it's great Poland is now paying forward and helping someone else. Your attitude is sickening and cowardly, the perfect example of the "it's all about me" generation. Now roll over and bark like a Russian lap dog should...

Polish Girfriend is shortly described in post

Thanks, I read your observations, looks like there are more similarities than differences between Canamericans (yes, that's a word :) and men and women from Poland. Hopefully the married man who was hitting on you is the exception to the rule but you never know. Unfortunately, I've seen similar behavior from both men and women on this side of the pond. I guess honesty and truthfulness just isn't en vogue anymore. :(

I like your plain English and to the point daily summaries, feel like I'm visiting Poland there with you, very cool.

Dzięki

On the serious note: many Polish couples cheat and they see nothing wrong with it. I heard it from the Aussie guy I work with too. He noticed that he gets a lot of interest from other women even though they know he is attached.

Is that true? Is that your own observation or something you've heard from others? Pretty sad but I guess that's the way things are nowadays. Sad.

Is your "Polish girlfriend" summary within this thread? Must have missed it.

PS. Never got your text.

Keedin' folks lol
