News / How much Poland's economy grew up since 1989? [32]

The Lublin region had the lowest per capita GDP in the European Union until Bulgaria and Romania joined in 2007 (it was 32% of EU average in 2002). It is a part of eastern Poland, which has benefited less from the economic transformation after 1989 than regions of Poland located closer to Western Europe. While the standard of living in the city of Lublin is considerably higher than in the surrounding countryside, the city's relatively poor economic performance is tied to the poverty of its region.

Going by population, looks pretty bad

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

MARKET OVERVIEW

Poland’s housing market has yet to recover from the global financial crisis. In the years leading up to it, particularly in 2004 when the country joined the European Union, the tri-city area of Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot saw steep increases in home prices. The housing bubble popped when banks severely tightened lending standards as a result of the troubles elsewhere, said Kazimierz Kirejczyk, the president of the board of REAS, a Warsaw residential real estate consulting and research firm.

“After 2008, the prices decreased gradually,” Mr. Kirejczyk said. “We can estimate — and it depends on location and type of property — between 15 and 25 percent.”

The market hasn’t rebounded completely and prices may drop further still, said Marcin Plazinski, the associate director of research at Emmerson Real Estate, which has headquarters in Warsaw. Because some property developers anticipated a recovery in 2010 and 2011, they embarked on development projects, adding to the oversupply of housing. Meanwhile, he said, banks have yet to loosen their stringent lending requirements.

“In Gdansk,” Mr. Plazinski said, “home prices fell about 15 to 20 percent from 2008 to nowadays, and we expect an additional 10 percent drop, I’d say, in the following months.”

Tommy doesn't realise that. He's too infatuated with Poland and everything Polish it's gone to his head. Anything he believes is even mildly critical of his new found country he goes berserk

agreed. Going through the honeymoon period, the poor fool.

News / PiS wants symmetry for minorites living in Poland [71]

polonius:
divorced Polish parents are banned from speaking Polish to their kids

LOL Who said that?

hhah, I was told by a few Polish people, that Polish people were banned from speaking Polish at work in Ireland. I met an Irish guy a while back who was a truck driver , he told me he was stopped at the border coming into Poland and fined by the police. He said he had done nothing wrong,so I asked him why he had been given a fine,,, and he replied "the police man said, you are Irish and you people treated our people badly when they worked in Ireland so this fine I'm giving you is a punishment" I am convinced 100% that the Irish guy who told me this with absolute sincerity in his eyes, was talking complete sh1t and his only interest was manifesting an us versus them scenario by any means necessary. His general attitude was plagues with racist slurs so I have no doubt that he was basically a fear spreading liar(like PIS), but!! I'm sure he went back to Ireland and spread his lie to every daft Irish person he met.

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

Poland inadvertently got out of trouble with international law, because it reduced its emission unintentionally in the 90's, due to the mass closure of its industry. Today, cutting down on coal would push them into the hands of the Russians and gas etc, I know this obvious!!but, is this not where this argument should be going, rather than entertaining the waffle from the loons in the climate change denier's brigade.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Comparing Poland to say Norway or Germany is rather ridiculous. Compare it to say Ukraine or Belarus and you'll have a much better comparison.

???

Ok, I agree, with that statement 100%.

You cannot blame Poland for the sh*t that's happened to her during the last 70 years.

??????
No, I blame Russia, actually.

Poland is definitely moving forward and will continue to grow strong.

I agree---I am not surprised by this ranking, you have to remember that we started from a very low base after communism, probably on the same level as Bulgaria,” said Piotr Bielski, an economist at BZ WBK.

“In fact, we have made progress in recent years narrowing that gap, not because of tremendous economic growth but because others have been shrinking while we have at least been growing,” he added, saying Poland had a chance to catch up to the rest of Europe “in 10 or 20 years.”

Mr Bielski also said he expected Poland to continue making progress on this front in the coming years due to steady economic growth.

GDP per capita: Poles still among the poorest in Europe

Despite steady economic growth, Poland's GDP per capita will still be one of the lowest in the EU next year

Source: The Economist
In 2013, Poland's GDP per capita will stand at $13,490, lower than any other country in the European Union bar Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria, according to a ranking prepared by The Economist magazine.

Poland was beaten out by countries such as Croatia, Lithuania, Russia and even Hungary, which has seen significant economic upheaval in recent years.

When the ranking takes into consideration purchasing pow-er parity, Poland just manages to slightly edge out the above-mentioned countries.

But it remains significantly poorer than its Western European counterparts, of whom the richest are the Norwegians, the Swiss and the Danes. To compare, Poland's nominal GDP per capita is seven times lower than that of Norway.

No I can't see how you can be right , please explain without the sneer?

I know that you are waiting for a huge property market crash and the frustration that it's not going to happen has probably clouded your judgement over economic issues...

I predicted that it will go to mid 2006 prices. When?? in the future sometime.

News / Poland: The poor get poorer - and next year will be worse [40]

15% of Poles live below the breadline.

And, add this to the millions who were forced to leave, paints a very dull picture of Poland, unlike the tabloid image of escaping the recession BS.

Even destroyed Ireland is doing better than "booming Poland".

modern right versus the traditional right,

Kaczyński's no fool

the real fools are his supporters and admirers. He's just a parasite living on ignorance.

but a poltician should not allow himself to be victimised or held hostage by it the way Kaczyński has done.

because he is too mentally unstable to be even trusted with running a car ,never mind running a nation between two Bears.

News / In Bialystok, the mayor has now openly said he would like to lobby for ONR (National Radical Camp) [22]

At the moment things are being held together by EU grants, mass emigration, mass privatization, billions being sent home from millions of Poles abroad. The worry is, is that if their is further collapse in the EU, the Polish house of cards may collapse and the thugs and the their populace rats may become more significant.

Look at Greece atm

Greece, black alert

In the context of shameful European indifference, Greece is getting dangerously close to a social and racial explosion.

Racist, anti-Semitic and revisionist declarations have become increasingly frequent, especially from high-ranking political leaders. The president of the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights recently compared immigrants to cockroaches, amid general indifference. The Golden Dawn's spokesman was able to quote the famous anti-Semitic hoax, "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," in Parliament and receive no condemning reactions for it.

So you think that burning fossil fuels or running potentially life threatening reactors is better than harvesting energy from wind, water and the sun, which is free, abundant and risk free?

Maybe he thinks green tax is an international collection for the New World Order, or international communism; Probably just your typical paranoid John Birch/ Radio Maria/ teabagger.

I cannot see the far-right gaining any more power in Poland than in any other central European country.

I really hope that is true, but these thugs serve the purpose or repressing and intimidating from below; the Neo-liberals that swept into power in 1989, as part of their Friedman agenda, remove any discussion on the economic conditions of the majority, from above. And, the church do their usual job of preventing critical thinking and maintaining division; just like they did prior to WW2 emphasizing that Polish Jews were not Polish. There is a major problem in Poland I feel, among a large section of the populace in relation to the realities of the modern world and general interaction with the outer world(resentment towards the mere mention of multiculturalism). At the moment things are being held together by EU grants, mass emigration, mass privatization, billions being sent home from millions of Poles abroad. The worry is, is that if their is further collapse in the EU, the Polish house of cards may collapse and the thugs and the their populace rats may become more significant. I think were Poland differs from other countries is that there is still a strong church backed(Radio Maria ONR) ignorance driving the old right wing as opposed to the modern Berlusconi right wing that keeps the people numbed with trash TV/ púrn.

We are now living in a new reality - and hardly anyone seems to realize it," the Antifascist coalition of November 11 has declared. Besides the nationalist riots which rocked Warsaw for the evening of November 11, a range of attacks took place that day to commemorate "National Independence Day." The Nationalists have announced a new militant strategy against democracy. ONR (Obóz Narodowo Radykalny, the National Radical Camp) and Młodzież Wszechpolska (All Polish Youth) MW, the groups responsible for organizing the march through Warsaw have now officially united and subsequently called for the overthrow of the Republic and the formation of paramilitary groups into a so-called "National Guard." The call sounds strikingly similar to Hitler's Brownshirts who patrolled German cities and broke opposition groups in the 1920's and 30's. Mussolini had similar backing with his "Blackshirts" who took over Rome marching street by street routing political enemies. This is the reality we are talking about, fascist militias coming to a town near you.

Well the Eurovision is a crock of sh1t, but they are introducing another scam mortgage grant in June that will be billed to the tax payer, rather than allowing the market to dictate prices. BROWN ENVELOPES. Austerity measure dictated by the crooks and bandits.

Life / British living in Poland - documentary [42]

they lived outside a system they hated.

The system in Poland is still pretty rotten, the zus, and the most common wage in the east of Poland is barely enough to cover the rent in a sh1tty one bedroom apartment in a revolting block, hence, people have left in there thousands. To survive it looks like people still have to play the games of bureaucracy in order to remain in Poland. Blackmarket, avoid zus, bribe people in high places, cheat in exams etc etc. Obviously things are much better now than during communism, but the fact that there is mass emigration, must mean it's still pretty sh1t here.

Also, what was the driving like in Poland then? The death rate on Polish roads is now 50% above EU average.

Fake hipsters? The whole hipster thing "is" fake.

in fact they are in more of a prison than before.

Well!! It's a form of democracy, sort of Milton Friedman style, forced on Poland to benefit and secure an elite loyal to the USA and the West. It worked.
