Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

This American says feb-ru-ar-y, (four syllables) as do all of my friends. And I say veg-ta-bull and comf-tr-bull (three syllablables). As I've said before. I pronounce my r's. So do my students.

Law / Is having private students in Poland legal? Or a registration as self-employed is required [30]

I haven't done private lessons in many years (too exhausting!)

What? Too exhausting? I love private lessons. Many of my private lesson students have become my friends. They get my best, just like my students in my school. Why is that exhausting? It's what we do as English teachers in Poland, and the pay is good. My students come to me. I won't travel to meet them, which means that they are serious about meeting with me.

imagine half a$$ing Polish and traveling abroad with it......

Imagine perfect Polish and traveling abroad with it. Except maybe in London or Chicago, it ain't gonna help you very much.

Think morning as in for or nor

Mourning as in more sore/soar four

Again, to my ear, they sound the same. But then, I'm a Yank.

Don't you love to hear vegetable and comfortable?

Food / Types of CHEESE in Poland [150]

That's entirely possible. Typical conversation-Do you like shrimp? NO! Have you ever tasted shrimp? NO, but i don't like shrimp.

There was a similar conversation in one of my classes a couple of years ago. A 14 year old girl said she didn't like cheeseburgers. Another student asked her if she had ever tried one. The answer was no, but she knew that she didn't.

Go figure.

Food / Types of CHEESE in Poland [150]

Poles I know only seem to like bland cheese.

That's been my experience in my four years here. But it's really no surprise considering that most Polish food is pretty bland and Poles like ketchup on pizza. But that's already a discussion on other threads.

Travel / Is panhandling a common sight in Poland? [24]

Do street musicians require licenses to perform in Polish cities?

Not in Gdansk. Many of them are students from the Music Academy here and they play some pretty good music. Some of my students-not from the Music Academy-play under the Green Gate. Great acoustics.

While visiting Poland, I didn't happen to see much panhandling.

Unfortunately, it exists. While in Warsaw for six weeks four years ago, I was panhandled almost every day, either for money or cigarettes, and sometimes both. The best one was a guy who spoke to me first in Polish, then French, and then English.

After Warsaw I moved to Gdansk where I've lived for four years. Panhandling isn't limited to the destitute. Young men frequently come up to me to bum a cigarette, but if you sit outside a cafe or pub you can count on someone asking you for money or smokes. I always reply "I work so I can buy cigarettes and beer. Why don't you work?" Usually they leave muttering some Polish obscenity-thank the k word-but they always go away.

four, more, saw and door

For me, saw doesn't even belong with the other three. Very different pronunciation in American English. When I say I park my car, I pronounce the r's.

The a sound for me is the same in all of these!

But not for me. Again, they're very different.

The difference in pronunciation is one of the things that make English so rich, and so frustrating for non native speakers.

Travel / Any Hooters in Poland? [28]

That must leave Sopot only then.

All the Roosters in trojmiasto closed, but they've just reopened in Sopt and Gdynia. Now ord yet on whether we'll see one in Gdansk. I loved the place. The food was OK but they had eight TVs for sports.

Work / Salary for Teaching EFL in Krakow [120]

to not teach their students as little as possible.

You do know that what you wrote means that they do exactly the opposite of what you actually meant.

Work / Graduate Certificate in TESOL - respected by potential employers in Poland? [17]

If you want to teach English in Poland, do the CELTA here. You can do it in four weeks and you'll make more contacts, especially in Warsaw. Do a course in early August, you'll finish in early September with plenty of time to land a job before the school year starts. I speak from personal experience four years ago.
