As for whether Poles are white or not - that also depends on a definition. I know there are people who don't consider Latinos or Arabs to be properly white and if they aren't then I guess I'm the only white member of my family, because it's significant part is darker than my half-Arab friend and her Arab father.

I think White or Black is more how you behave if you have a white skin and behave like a Black,then you are Black for sure.

it IS very difficult to say what is white and what is not. regardless of what people may think, Jews, for example, (based on semitic bloodline, not religion) are not white, but may look more white than you and i. its there if you look close enough.

i consider myself white, but it also may depend on where your family originates from. my family is from Poznań and Zielona Góra. now, Western Poland, being so close to Germany, has been German land at one point AND another. i'm not saying those from Eastern Poland are not white, or Polish, but, realistically, we must admit that there's more potential mongol influence in Eastern Polish genes, as the Polish moved West to escape mongol reign.

that being said, the U.S., or North America in general, is the biggest melting pot in the world, so anyone saying North America is more "white" than Europe, is a complete and utter moron. this may be due to your location in the U.S. as well.

Here's a map showing the distribution of African DNA in Europe. I don't know if it makes any difference in physical characteristics, though countries like Spain or Italy aren't exactly known for being predominantly blond.

Spanish are Arabs plus Vesigoths.South Italians are Greeks mixed with negroes(unfortunately).

That's the silliest thing I've ever heard. Where the heck do they think their original ancestors came from? If you ever come across another person like that, tell them that if they are White Americans then their ancestors must have come from Europe at some point and time. I have never really heard anyone say this, but I don't doubt it there are many weirdos like this out there.

I think it's the lack of education in America that makes people so naive and mindless. I was bon in the US with European parents and let me just say tha I have had several people tell me I have an accent when I speak English. What???? I speak only Polish at home but have an accent? I saw germanys team on friday against Uruguay, they fielded 5, yes, that's FIVE non-ethnic german players in their squad. And the french and dutch are right up there with them. But somehow the countries closer to Africa seem to have the least of the africans...like Spain, Greece or Italy who are exclusively white. When I think back, Olisadebe on the polish squad was a frikkin insult, and I'd rather Poland NEVER qualify than seeing some africans running around with a polish eagle on their chest celebrating a goal in the world cup.

There are of course different looking poles, depending where you come from in Poland/your geographical background. The same goes for any country of a certain size. Here in Norway, the people from the north are easily distinguished from the southern people. Down south you can easily find blond/brown eyed people, while up north you will find darker haired/blue eyed people. Anyone have any views on the different groups/looks that exists in Poland or the history about them? It would be interesting to know some more facts about the different peoples of Poland!

They were found in Saxony east Germany 4,600 yrs ago

So we Poles are indigenous to Poland

Western Europeans have alot of Tropical proportions similar to people in north & east Africa. Such as Long thin skulls & long thin builds & limbs which radiate heat cooling off & Western Europeans have alot more Curley hair i notice too. Especially in the British isles & France

I think you would need to ask that person what it is they meant by "white." Sometimes in America, I've heard people use the term "white" as more of a cultural term than a racial term, "white" being used to described a sort of absence of culture that some Americans (over time) have evolved towards. Think white-bread, bland, boring, but fitting in with some kind of mythology of Western culture in America. I think it is not right to use this term this way, because it denies everyone their difference. But if this is what they mean by "white", you should be glad that you are not being lumped in with that term. If someone said, "he/she's the whitest person I know" its usually a bit of a jab to say that this person has no culture, is kind of bland, probably doesn't now many people different from himself and doesn't care to. But you, being Polish, have some sort of cultural identity and difference that is being acknowledged. "You're not really white" doesn't mean your not white... This is hard to explain if you are not from here, and even I understand how ridiculous and contradictory it sounds and is.

I say mythology of American culture because its not really true. Americans have always come from everywhere, but there's been this "standard" for a long time of what it means to be typically American. A lot of it was based in White Anglo Saxon Protestant cultural values because historically that's been the culture of most of the power elite in America. Since it has has been encouraged for immigrants to blend in & for America to be a "melting pot", its resulted in kind of a 'whitewashing' over the years but i don't like this term either. A lot of this is changing now I think.

My thoughts on this are that light skinned (white) immigrants were always encouraged to be "American" & to embrace the dominant culture, and leave their roots behind. As the generations pass, they become less and less attached to the past, and they are just American. Now white Americans without culture or ties to the past, I hear a lot of people just call "white". There should be a different term. Immigrants from India, Asia, etc have also been encouraged to just be "American" but it is obvious they are not white. So even if they have completely cut ties with their roots over time and are "Americanized" into dominant culture, they usually are not called "white." This is why it doesn't make sense to use "white" as a cultural term. Black Americans are another story too because there is Black (American) culture, to which black people may or may not identify with. Or they may identify with to varying degrees in different situations. Is a black American who doesn't identify "white"? Of course not, but they might also be called "white" as an insult, and often Black immigrants are "whiter" in that sense. And what is a black person, what is a white person, what is a brown person? Is it skin color? Because race is a very constructed and complex concept and but that is a whole different story. This is an interesting thing to think about as an American.

Even someone from school always referred to Americans/Canadians as "they are white" but I'm not "white" because I'm European. Whats up with that? Must be a slang of some sort
