Where can I get free yeast to bake with in Poland?

In the UK, you can sometimes get free yeast from a supermarket's bakery department, to bake your own bread with.

Because bread is relatively inexpensive in Poland, I'm guessing people don't bake their own bread that often here?

The dried yeast here in the shops is not terribly good value, so I was wondering where I can get free bread yeast - if anywhere.

I would request it at a bakery, but they would probably ask me if I was taking the Piast...

You can buy fresh yeast in most grocery stores. Look for "drożdże", usually they're located in the refrigerators close to dairy products and cost about 1 zł for a 100 g packet.

Strzyga, when you say grocery shops should I assume you mean excluding supermarkets? A large Carrefour didn't stock anything but the dried stuff.

Should I try convenience stores on residential estates or Spoem etc? No luck so far locally.

Społem sell it. Look where the cheese is.

I don't know if fresh yeast in any good for baking bread, but let me know how it turned out:). I use it as peeling on my face.

The last time I made bread it was soda Irish bread or something like that, but I still have some dry Canadian one I am saving in case I want to bake something.

edit: fresh yeast is OK, just checked. have fun, I love fresh home bread:)

I thought that was what bakers use, they can't afford the dried stuff as it's quite dear if you bake often.

Biedronka (among others) and any small food shop should have the fresh one: just ask for świerze drożdże- a nice tongue twister btw.

If you like decent, crusty bread, remember it's quicker to prepare it at home than to queue at a decent bakery!

Auchan have the fresh yeast - same price as Spolem btw.

Just want to recomment Gdansk Mills' flour - makes a great brown loaf (type 1850 flour).
It's called Gdańskie Młyny Pełno mąka Ziarnista pszenna. It's inexpensive and it's pretty much the dog's wotsits.

Glad you've found it! Now that you know what to look for, you should be able to spot it in most shops :)

BTW, have you ever tried to make rye bread, or sourdough bread of any type? Takes a little time to develop your own sourdough, but it makes great bread too and it keeps longer than the yeast-grown kind.

I've been getting mine for free for a long time at my local Asda. I just go up to the bakery counter and ask for some yeast please, but last time I asked they said they were gonna charge me for it but had'nt worked out the barcode for it to go thru the checkout. They gave me a bit to be going on with. Tonite when I asked to buy some they still had'nt sorted the barcode out but gave me a small bit to be going on with. I said I thought they were meanies (half joking and they defended themselves by saying well we have to pay for it) So all that has happened is that I have to ask more often for some free yeast and despite the disgruntled look on the bakery assistants I still get free yeast!!!
