My wife is going to the University of Minnesota, USA for an Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program August- September 2007.
And my question is what is the crime rate like there? I looked on the City of Minneapolis, Minnesota - Official Web Site and the crime figures shocked me and I wondering if anyone has any personal experience of this place?

And any advice would very much appreciated.
Maybe I am being a bit over sensitive but she is my wife and I want to make sure she is safe.
Thanks guys :)

My brother lived in Minneapolis with his wife and two small children, I've visited him several times, and go there once in a while and let me tell you that it's one of the nicest cities I've been to. It's a big city and a lot going on but very friendly. Of course if you walk down the streets at night after closing the bars you might not be so safe.

But I've been to that University because I was checking out their veterinary program, since I was the president of the pre-vet club in Wisconsin and they have a very good safe campus. I stayed overnight at their dorms and there is nothing to worry about. So she will be in good hands.

It is a very good University.

Thankyou very much Krysia, you have put a husbands mind at peace. I guess its the same all over the world, if you put yourself in the wrong places you will find trouble. :)

Just another quickie Krysia, as you seem to have some experience there…… do they have internet connections in the dorms? I suspect they would do, as we wish to keep in touch through the Internet through skype or something like that :)

Stay away from North side and lake st east of 35W. Sex crime is the one of highest in the US ,just use common sense. Northeast minneapolis once was hub for slavic population ,so there you can find Polish beer, some Polish kielbasa, church. if you take Unversity Ave and 4 th st from U of M towards west , you will see Surdyk's liquor store. (E Hennepin Ave & University Ave NE 612-379-3232 great wine and beer selection) One block south on Hennepin Ave from there is a Karmarczuk Sausage store.(Very nice!)Also, if keeps going on University farther west and turn right at 13 th ave and first corner of your left you would see Europol Eva store. (359 13 th ave NE,612-617-0022) She sells Polish groceries, not much selection ,but nice Polish lady runs this place.

Enjoy and hopefully your time here would be priceless one.

pol pol is right those are the 2 worst areas to be alone in the cities, But it really is kinda far from campus and a big walk..I live in minneapolis and went to the U for a year. there is no worries, I have also traveled the world and lived in many other american cities...minneapolis is in my opinion cold but one of the safest in all aspects
