Chicagoans, I need help to find finding immigration documents

my grandfather and his brother came to America...around 1900.
They settled in Chicago.
I am trying to find out about -
when they reached this country(I cannot find them on the Ellis Island web-site.I have tried every spelling that was close.)
were there other Ports Poles came through?
Is the Polish Roman-Catholic Union,on Milwaukee Ave,of any help finding immigration/naturalization/petition documents?
Northeastern University ,I am told, has many documents. They said they take requests over the phone, but it is 7 months, and I hear nothing...
I am outside of Chicago, and would prefer on-line searches, but would gladly come in for the day,if there was a good expectation of sucess.

thank you
dave

Merged: Information on US immigration status change

Does someone know if there is a place on the web to get information on immirgration status change?

My friend is a Polish lady, 30 years old with her 7 year old child in Chicago. She is working two jobs and tells me she has some sort of short term Visa - I thought she said 6 months. She wants more permanent status. I want to help her but I need to better understand the status issue.

Any direction would be appreciated.
