What is good about being in the UK?

How is crisps off-topic? It's sth I really like about the UK. It's a general discussion on crisps and on a minor tangent at most. Shawny talked about diversity and different directions before and he was right.

So, please point me to where I went off-topic.

Not necessarily you Seanus but the topic is "What is good about being in the UK?". We understand about topics going in different directions but this is turning into one about crisps, not the original point of the thread. It's just heading off topic. Thanks.

Crisps are an institution in the UK. We have a major crisps culture and, for me, is a good thing about being in the UK. PD, no offence if it is you moderating, but absence makes the heart (taste buds, lol) grow fonder. There is a lot to discuss and other posters were keen too.

Don't laugh but people build careers around crisps, it's a big industry in the UK. I enjoyed good crisps and love talking about them.

There is no rule as to how long to stay on one topic. There IS a rule about religion not being part of it but there are numerous threads on it.

OK, let's say Scotland. For me:

1) Forest walks and the fresh air there

2) The range of international cuisine

3) Pub lunches

4) Cycling routes

5) The interesting range of accents

6) Golf

7) Watching local footie games

8) Some aspects of multiculturalism

I think the fact that we're not allowed to post in Polish may have something to do with it; this is not an issue on proper Polish forums of course.

There's a big crisps factory just down the road from me :) and yes, you are right - it's a big part of UK culture. Maybe Yanks just don't like crisps?

I miss pub lunches that turn into 'christ, i've been here since lunchtime, might as well get some dinner in and just one more beer....i swear' occasions. Archie Simpsons was somewhat terrible for that happening to you :(

Poland badly needs the concept of 'cheap pub that sells food and where you have lunch and end up going home ruined at 7pm' :D

Archie Simpsons had that quality to it, that you didn't want to leave. The same as Ma Camerons.

you really must be joking pal :) our rent for a 60 m flat is 30 quid a month (this is a railroad colony in the forest) - can you get anything near that in Britain - I should mention that 120 quid a week in London for a 30 m flat is not that expensive - there was quite recently an add here of a little flat (a studio) in a standalone house in Gdynia (Orłowo) for 500zl - this is not that exceptional actually (I lived in one such place in Gdynia once for the same money) - it is of course relative thing - affordability of these is very different with Polish and British wages

Have you lived outside of cities in the UK? because the rental prices are extremely different.

£300 for a flat? Monthly? That's a brilliant deal! I think you might be getting mixed up mate.

And that's what I was talking about. How can anyone justify these 1500-2000 PLN/month rents for tiny 30m2 flats in Poland, when wages don't even cover the rent? Whereas I'm about to move into a 2 bedroom house (approx 80m2) here in England, in a good area within a city a bit larger than Gdansk. The rent will be about 2000PLN/month and 70% of my net salary will be left over after rent.

Find me an 80m2 flat in Poland, less than 6km from the centre of a major city, which costs 300-400PLN/month, and we can start calling Poland "cheap" again ;)


Maybe he isn't? I still lived in the Midlands (Birmingham) in 2003, and I was paying £550 a month for an enormous three-bedroom flat in one of the best areas of town, and I imagine that Leicester was significantly cheaper.

you know - construction materials and energy prices are not very different in Poland and in Britain - there has been shortage of flats in Poland for years on end (only now the supply comes anything near the demand - the affordability was the reason then as it is still important now) - there has been credit availability issue over the years here also - it is not that long that credit is pretty easily available (well was before the credit crunch - but I don't know the realities in this field now)

I miss the range of chocolate available. Don't worry, Mods, I'll confine it to getting a reminder from others here.

Still some great old style pubs with great beer. Went in one yesterday afternoon Irish owned and run great guinness and one guy on a keyboard and another guy on a guitar singing away, it could have almostbeen RLs local.

That is my hangover cure...bag of wotsits and a can of giner ale - aparently its the E numbers in the watsits..only thing I dont like about them is how they turn your fingers orange!

most of these welfare allowances and other state benefits are making people lazy .it makes me sick, some Poles most probably losers who want to live in ghettos would go for it, no any person with self respect and a future in Poland would even consider to live on benefits alienated from hostile local community in environment where in every media you can watch, hear or read news giving bad names about Poles or better ( to **** off us probably )

- Eastern Europeans - but rarely taking responsibility for words and too lazy to publicize valid stats and avoid like a focker disease subjects about other non white people

Well, kindly get off the thread and let others willingly contribute in a constructive fashion.

The main good thing about the UK is the choice of international brands. Streets ahead of Poland in this regard.

Ales are another good thing about the UK. Scotland has some good ones but the English perhaps have better ones.

Very true loads of good ales out there at the moment.

The ones from Faversham, Kent, are really top drawer. They go down a treat at Xmas with the whole shebang.

Yes the shepard neame brewery, very good beer. I also like most of the Black sheep brewery ales (no pun intended) :-)

Tskie,zywiec and lech widely available now in pubs in the UK.

its better than the other foreign stuff theyve been selling for decades IMO, with the exception of Coors on draught, thats great if you can find it.


Id recommend a visit if you have the opportunity, the same as France or Germany, it has to be on any foreigners top 10 list of places to visit.. Did you know France is the most visited country in the World, shocking!!
