It is just awful. The Polish driver lived in England for awhile, and the other exits were open. There was absolutely no reason for him to turn around on that expressway. Bloody, frickin' ridiculous. The family in the other car just lost the Patriarch 2 weeks ago. The emotional toll must be unbelievable!

Update:

Mariusz Marcin Adamski, 24, a lorry driver from Leicester, made a U-turn in his VW Passat as he got to roadworks, Bedford Coroner's Court heard.

He then drove north, away from junction 10, along the southbound carriageway.

His jobs means he was familiar with the roads in the UK, he was a damn lorry driver!

So-called professional drivers are often the worst on the road.

Terrible business really, as it was so avoidable.

It's highly illegal anyway. Logic would tell you not to do that.

Don't forget, Poland doesn't have a huge number of motorways, so the concepts of motorway driving are not always obvious. I recall a case a few years ago in the Midlands, where an Irish ambulance driver was prosecuted for reversing up the hard shoulder. His excuse, when police stopped him was, "Sorry, I'm Irish!" He'd never been out of Ireland before but was a very experienced driver.

The situation isn't actually that uncommon. In Germany drivers who do this are known as "Ghost-drivers" and there are special proceedures for other drivers and the police for dealing with someone who finds themselves on the wrong side of the autobahn.

I believe in this situaion the Polish driver may have been confused by roadworks. Not surprised, they can be bloody confusing.

It is so sad.

I heard somebody say that the UK should be held to account as it condones driving on the left-hand side of the road rather than on the right. It was a Pole who told me this.

Tell the Pole he should come over to Poland and drive up the Warsaw-Gdansk road and see all the big, expensive Polish registered cars which seem to condone driving on the left as well, overtaking several cars at once on double white lines (above the speed limit) and expecting YOU to drive in the gutter to accomodate their stupidity.

I remember having a conversation with a Polish guy a while back and he thought it was completely acceptable to drive on the hard shoulder??? WTF! He was stuned when I told him it was illegal to drive on the hard shoulder and he would get in trouble for doing so, his response was "but it's just another lane"....

In Poland the hard shoulder is where you drive when the idiot in the Audi is driving towards you on your side of the road.

This person will get their driving licence tomorrow. They are in Poland already.

Thanks for the warning> I'll look both ways when I cross the road (and step ONTO the pavement)

The key word here Trev is POLAND, the accident happened in ENGLAND - he was an experienced driver, he drove for a living, I am sure in his 3 years of living here he had driven on many motorways, you know as well as I do there are plenty of motorway works - it's not uncommon, this was NOT an accident, it was a blatently irresponsible act that cost of the lives of 4 other people, not to mention the fact he has left a small child and wife back in Poland!

Poland needs a stricter driving test its as simple as that, The roads need to be policed against dangerous driving (not just speeding). The driving test should include driving etiquette IE letting people out and when you see a car trying to enter a motorway/dual carriageway etc you pull over to let them in and simple things such as clutch control and learning how to park in a bay etc. It would also be useful to explain that overtaking should only be conducted on clear roads. Also is the breaking distance here measured in millemetres as opposed to metres?

I drove from Poznan to warsaw the other day and the quality of driving by other road users was laughable, Maybe i was just pissed off as I couldn't see to overtake anything and got stuck behind a truck for hours :)

Shelley, I wasn't excusing the guy, I was commenting on the Polish idea that it is OK to drive on the hard shoulder to allow the faster driver to overtake you.

In my experience it is pretty common for some pr!ck to decide that because his car is oh-so-cool that he can disregard both safety and legality and overtake a line of cars (less expensive than his, so he has the right to be in front) on a piece of road where overtaking is forbidden, stupid or both. He then is amazed to find that when he is on the left hand side of the road that there are other cheaper vehicles who have the audacity to be using the same road as him and are moving towards him. He is so disgruntled that he flashes his lights and utters the K-word to tell the stupid driver of the cheaper vehicle that they should move into the gutter/onto the hard shoulder/ or, even better, into a tree/ditch to make room for his oh-so-expensive car.

Usually it is Audi's and BMWs but more expensive versions of other cars are also liable (or Russian/Lithuanian truckers coming from Gdansk and driving forest roads at night).

People ask me if I find it difficult driving on the right in Poland. The answer is 'no', it is just all the pr1cks who are driving on the left which I find a problem.

Apparently this guy was speaking on his mobile to his mother in Poland just before the accident, saying he couldn't get good info on his satellite road reading thing....

"What about people that just want a couple of weeks holiday?" everybody starts bleating, "should they have to take another driving test ??"

After seeing a French registered car parked up in the central filter lane of a busy A road and 2 old dears studying a map, yes, atleast a pop quiz at Dover.....

saying he couldn't get good info on his satellite road reading thing....

What info did he need, its the M1 for goodness sake,I drove down it 2 days after passing my test! The only place it gets a bit dodgy is about 15odd miles from the M25 when it suddenly opens up into godknows how many lanes.

Man, lol, if I visited the UK the last thing I would do is drive. Oh man I don't even want to think about how confusing it would be. I can understand getting turned around quite easily if one is used to driving on the other side of the road to begin with and the steering wheel is on the opposite side one is used to.

Dunno if that's the case with this but it's easy to see how things could get quite surreal very quickly. I can imagine it was quite scary for all involved. I would be terrified once I realized I was going the wrong way.

Man, lol, if I visited the UK the last thing I would do is drive.

Weve actually got some of the safest roads in Europe and pretty much the lowest rates of fatal accidents, plenty of idiots though but they are mostly lads under 25,fat blokes in white vans or dicks with braces driving audi's.

Oh man I don't even want to think about how confusing it would be.

Lol,Ive been driving here for 10 years and baring a brief run round the dutch countryside in a wartime jeep before I even had a UK licence I still leave the car at home before going to Europe and stick to public transport or Taxis,I mean,it takes me 3 days before I caan cross roads safely,Im not rushing to get behind the wheel on the wrong side :)

Funny enough i adapted to driving on the other side of the road very quickly , and even coped with having to drive a large truck on the wrong side of the road , and with the wheel on the wrong side.........The thing that almost brought my life to a premature end was walking across the road , this i found dam dangerous untill i got used to it.....Now after being in Poland for five years i am going over to the UK to collect a car , and do some walking about....look out everybody....!
