We are traveling to Wrocław, Krakow and Warsaw this summer, and have heard about milk bars - can anyone provide locations of any and tell us more about them? We were told that they were the "family restaurant" during the soviet era. Thank you.

These are simple restaurants in which the meals are subsidized by the government and so the prices are lower. They are beginning to disappear. I've seen very few in my travels through Poland in the past couple of years.

and there are some pubs, usually students pubs that carry the same name, so be aware of that not every bar mleczny is "the bar mleczny"

Only one?

There's one on Sw. Marcin, one on Szkolna (two seconds from the Rynek), one on Dąbrowskiego, one on Pl. Wolności, Pl. Cyryla Ratajskiego and one on Podgórna.

And that's off the top of my head...

There is one in Kraków on Grodzka that is not too bad. There are also a few places that don't carry the name but it's the same idea. There is a good place on Karmelicka.

An "outsiders" view,I was touched by having to clear my own table, the stocky armed matronly ladies with severe faces and smells of long simmering cabbage reminded me of my old primary school canteen, only with kasha and borsht :)

This was in a suburb of Warsaw in 05.
