Holiday in Poland advice? Sights, some photography, look around etc.

Hey there! I'm an 18-year-old female student, and I'm interested in visiting Poland maybe over this summer. I'm British, but don't worry, I'm not going to get plastered and start tearing the place apart! My friends want me to go to Ibiza instead (just guess the reason!), but I don't fancy spending all my time in a foreign country totally off my face.

Anyway, I'm primarily interested in seeing the sights, doing some photography, having a look round etc.

Sooooooo.. my questions are:

- Should I go alone, or travel with a friend?
- What mode of transport? Bus? Train?
- How is Poland expense-wise? Is it an expensive place to travel in?
- Any dangers I should know of?
- How friendly are you guys? People over here in London can be pretty terse with strangers, especially foreigners. ;_;
- How many people speak English? Will it be a problem if I don't speak Polish (other than a few guidebook phrases)?

Also, any recommendations of which city or town to visit would be great, or any specific things I should see.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help. <3

Hello Rosamira,

And welcome to the Polish Forums.

- Should I go alone, or travel with a friend?

Either, it is up to you.
If you wish to do extensive travelling in the country side it might be better to bring a friend for company.
Polish people speak English more in the bigger cities.

- What mode of transport? Bus? Train?

All modes of transport are good, I would recommend buying a bike and biking it.

- How is Poland expense-wise? Is it an expensive place to travel in?

It is not expensive in comparison to London, it is bloody cheap in comparison to London :)

- Any dangers I should know of?

.I would say NO.
The usual applys at night near bars in the big cities but common sence is enough.

- How friendly are you guys? People over here in London can be pretty terse with strangers, especially foreigners. ;_;

This is a good question, people from the west often talk about how "unfriendly" Easteners are but it is not true.
People here do not smile with their mouths but with their eyes.
Eye contact is much more important here than in London (if you know what I mean).

- How many people speak English? Will it be a problem if I don't speak Polish (other than a few guidebook phrases)?

In the cities all hotels/restaurants/ and most of the people can speak English, in the country side, only some young people (I would say).

But all you need is a few guidebook phrases and a spring in your step and you'll be grand.

I am from Dublin and Live near Krakow. We can advise you better, if you tell us more about your interests, hobbies and preferences.

I like your attitude, Ibiza with drinking mates would be hell on earth for me.

I would say that Poland is probably safer than the UK for a girl on her own , but of course there are places and situations where it would not be wise to be on your own...

Travelling with a friend would certainly be a bit safer , and you would have at least one person who spoke your language....

Can,t advise on bus or train , as i have never used them during my five years here , my first time will be next week when i take a bus and train to the airport to fly to UK to collect a car....

I can,t think of any dangers that Poland has that are not the same as any other country....just like in the UK , there are times when being a girl on her own is risky...I have to say that women seem much more happy to walk around on their own at night here than in the UK , but thats in a small town near me where everybody knows everybody , i guess in the cities it might be a bit different...

You will find that many of the younger people speak some English , especially in the towns , might be a bit more tricky in the villages with the older people....

What to see in Poland , thats a tricky one , depends what you are into.... get yourself a book called ROUGH GUIDE TO POLAND.. this has lots of info on what can be seen in all parts of Poland....

If you are visiting the north west of Poland where i live i can tell you about all the good places , and maybe fix you up with a girl of your age that speaks English who can show you around... I was a teacher of English to many girls in the town so it would be good practice for them., and you would have a guide to show you the good bits....

Hi

> Should I go alone, or travel with a friend?
You can go alone if you mean security reason. (With friend is more fun). We are not savages ;P. Seriously London or Paris are much dangerous (especially at night)

>What mode of transport? Bus? Train?

I don't like our train. Buses are cheaper and more comfortable. In the city best way to travel are bikes and tram. From England to Poland - plane.

- How is Poland expense-wise? Is it an expensive place to travel in?

hard to say. Some regions in the season are not cheap (Still cheaper than in London ;P)

- Any dangers I should know of?
No.
