Driving from Poznan to Croatia. Best way?

Has anyone ever driven from PL to Croatia? I think I'm looking at a 20+ hr drive. I've looked at a few direction sites and it's making me travel through Germany and requiring me to ferry from Bari Italy, but ther should be a route through CZ/ Austria. Also, any tips for travelling there? Anyone been? Shellster...you've been right?

Thanks everyone !!

Poland bound less than a week!!!

Well, we were supposed to take a trip to the Baltic coast at the end of August, but we're now talking about scratching that and heading to Croatia. We've never been there and supposedly the weather in Chłopy where we were going to stay isn't going to be that warm. We'll see.

you must be getting excited!!!! Enjoy!

You have no idea ;)

I was checking out Wroclaw to Venice recently and the online Motorway route says 1100 miles with a drive time of 8hrs+, however if you take the A road route its 900 Miles with 11 hrs drive time. The quick route is out of Poland into Germany and down through Austria, which is like taking a circle to get to the centre.

Ive decided to take the A road route through Czech Republic and try to keep the speed up as the long route but quicker via Motorways only just seems mad. My advice would be take the shortest route but try to stay away from the really bad single lane roads which should be shown as yellow on your EU map. Reds are OK in Poland anyway.

Aren't there any low-cost airlines that fly there? I'm sure that the road trip would be fun, but if time (and probably money when you facrtor in petrol and an overnight stop) is an issue, you'd be better off flying.

Where in Croatia? I love Dubrovnik - really beautiful city.

We're thinking Dubrovnik because at this point it looks most beautiful, but we're still looking. We'd like to drive because flying is always a hassle and we like road trips :) We can stop anywhere we want....besides, I'll be flying for 10 hrs the day before so the last place I'll want to be is on another flight :)

I'm thinking we're going to tour the coastline. I think this will be best being that Dubrovnik isn't too big.

Anyone know anything about the nightlife? I hear there is none....

There is nightlife there but it's not really touristy and it's a 20+ crowd... but there are lots of nice bars and live music off the main square.

I was told that the coast line round Pula is beatiful and that may be easier for you to get to than Durbrovnik

Thanks Shelley!! I appreciate the tips.

I heard dubrovnik is a popular destination for Poles. If any others have been, what do you say about Montenegro or Bosnia?

but it's not really touristy

As a tourist, I hate tourists....especially those cruiseship tourists :)

I'm hearing that extra insurance has to be purchased to travel there (with PL vehicle) and there a quite a few tolls to pay through CZ. Also, the route through Slovenia I hear is treacherous. Has anyone driven through here?

I'm off to PL in 3.5 hrs. See you all in a couple of weeks !!

I hope everyone behaves ;)

Nice one Zgubiony,
i was in Dubrovnik before it was Croatia, for three months.
I loved it I had an amazing summer with friends.
Then the war broke out and I have not been back since.
I see the bullet holes in some of the walls.
I hope that was the last war in Europe, I can dream can;t I?

You might be just the man to ask, I am going to drive from Portugal to Krakow, I know it is a different route but I do not want the quickest way possibly, any suggestions?

Not really. I've never driven this route, but go to virtualtourist.com and ask around in there. There's tons of help and tips for travellers. Good luck!! My page [members.virtualtourist.com/m/a3382/]

I have just come back from Croatia, Dubrovnik- It is beautiful there but a bit pricey and many tourists. I regret that we didn't rent a car and drive arount. I only went on 1 day trip to Bosnia-Hercegovina to Mostar and Mejugorie.

Way too many tourists with the cruise ships. Hiring a car would've definitely been your best bet. I'd rather spend most of my time in Montenegro. Much nicer IMO.
