In my opinion many members of this forum dream about world created in Orwell book - 1984. What is more a lot of Europeans not consciously dream about such world.

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a 1949 English novel about life under a futuristic totalitarian regime in the year 1984.

The book has major significance for its vision of an all-knowing government which uses pervasive and constant surveillance of the populace, insidious and blatant propaganda, and brutal control over its citizens. The book had a substantial impact both in literature and on the perception of public surveillance, inspiring such terms as 'Big Brother' and 'Orwellian'.

The world is controlled by three functionally similar totalitarian super-states engaged in perpetual war with each other:

Oceania (ideology: Ingsoc or English Socialism) comprises Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, Polynesia, Southern Africa and the Americas.
Eurasia (ideology: Neo-Bolshevism) comprises continental Europe and northern Asia.
Eastasia (ideology: [b]Obliteration of the self, usually rendered as "Death worship") comprises China, Japan, Korea and Northern India.

In short, yes, but not as crudely as portrayed in Orwell's novel...'1984' was REQUIRED reading when I was in high school...I'm sure it is not now...For my perspective on how this is being played out, go to my weblog:

and read my essay 'The Ministry of Truth'...It is about the third article down when you open up the link.

Yes, we're nearly there.

Only this week at work, we were all required to update our personal information, because our Human Resources department must run 3 monthly checks (I work in a Government department) Not only do they wish to know our ethnic origin, we must put our religion and sexual orientation, Why? They monitor our computer usage at all times, including lunch breaks, they monitor which websites we are visiting.

I updated my details, I am now a Chinese Jedi and one of my emergency contacts is Napoleon Pig residing at Animal Farm. I'm just waiting for someone in HR to challenge me.

I like Orwell. I've read many of his books. My favourite was his "Burmese days" though.
subj: I agree with your notion Lukasz but I find orwellian world inevitable in the modern world. At present such words as "communism", "(sovereign... he-he...) democracy" or anything else are just words to please electorate... What really matters is the involvement of people into making essential decisions which have direct impact on their lives. This involvement has been minimized and this what indeed makes animals out of people.

Well said.

This is my primary reason to oppose the EU. However I oppose also bureaucrats in Poland itself. People often complain about 'upcoming Orwell' but somehow refuse to acknowledge the origin of this danger. No matter behind what mask bureaucracy is hiding, European, national, Slavic or worldwide people should refuse to tolerate their actions. Thus if even all parliamentary parties seems to be satisfied with bureaucracy, people should search for proper candidates outside of mainstream. Perhaps this is naive to believe that politically illiterate majority of electorate suddenly would find out what is wrong, however at least strong minority should put some pressure on establishment.

Communism pleases the electorate, well I never, wtf? Those in bunkers maybe.

Check out the Bush video on Youtube where he tries to pronounce totalitarianism, he makes a complete hash of it.
