Stolen car parts

How many of you have had parts stolen off your car?

Windshield wipers walked away in the middle of the night on a german plated rental car.

Body panel inserts, front grill, and the glass out of mirrors were professionally removed from my private car. I didn't replace the grill and the plastic body part, and bought some cheap stick on mirror glass replacements and slapped them on. Heating and autodimming doesn't work, but they've stayed put for the last 9 months...

Anyone else have experience with the car parts gnomes?

Yep, had my near-side lock barrel and stereo removed. Brand new car, Polish plates, had it not one week.

But the guys who took it were very lucky because I didn't catch them, and that's why they're still able to have children.

it happens here once in a while. Most parking areas to the rear of old town blocks are not very well lit (in this part of Wroclaw)

you know, the grill was stolen from a dimly lit parking area in the center of the some old buildings in wroclaw... you wouldn't happen to have an SLK grill for sale, would you?

So Poland is basically like a large Newark, NJ?

Cheery

I don't know Newark NJ, but maybe yes. The problem isn't as bad as it was a few years ago. Some people don't buy Mercedes/BMW for that reason.

hah i've heard some poles make tiny cracks on their side view mirrors to render them undesirable by theives.

In a county where car part theft is common i would say it is a smart idea. If a tiny, barely visible (to the driver) crack on the edge of the mirror is all it takes to prevent someone from stealing your side view mirrors, then hell i'd do it.

I have seen Polish friends remove their wipers and put them inside the car before leaving their car parked up for the night , but this was in a city , out in the sticks where i live , they leave the car unlocked with the engine running while they go into a shop...!

Nobody's ever taken anything from my cars but that could well be because they're less than common here.

Three years ago was the last incident. They tried dismantle grill to reach engine and steal whole car. Since the majority of thieves rush to West we have quiet on the housing estate. Nowadays I feel more comfortable when parking an older car among luxury cars. I hope not to be a target of sticky guys.

Been living here for over a year now, of which 8 months on foreign plates, never had any problem but the occasional scratch from blonde drivers trying to get out of a parking space, so I think it's quite safe here to leave your car...
