Poles that have lived or live abroad are they different?

That's the mistake right there. You should never use any Polish and just speak English. Almost every Pole will understand 'no understand' (sic). It's the same with the police or city guard. If you speak English enough, they often just give up without the bother of calling for a translator.

Aint that the truth i posted a letter the other day, the clerk started babbling in Polish to me so i told her in Polish i dont speak the lingo. I do speak enough to get by but she was going on and on, i felt like shouting at the top of my voice "I TOLD YOU I DONT SPEAK FCUKING POLISH".

Drives me crazy, they just babble on and on as if they cant comprehend that another human may not speak the language, how shallow can a nation be i ask you.

The thing is that many Poles living in Poland have little experience of speaking Polish to a learner of Polish. Whereas the British are used to hearing foreigners attempt English and will often try (unless they just enjoy being prix) to adjust their speech (S...L...O...W...L...Y... AND LOUDER!!!!!), many Poles don't and don't seem to have a concept of a need to do so.

Even if you say in Polish that you don't understand and ask them to speak slower, it seems that this suggests you can actually speak Polish and so they speak faster. It's often easier to just say you don't speak the language!

Probably for the same reasons they support British football teams and vote Yes to poxy treaties.
