I have lived in Poland for the last two years and have found nothing to be afraid of so far. The majority of Poles are very friendly and I have made many friends, however, if you are going to a small city do not expect many people to speak or understand English, so it's a good idea to learn how to 'do your day' in Polish. Phrase-books are not too helpful as the spoken language differs greatly from how it looks. If you want my advice, buy an audio language cd with an accompanying workbook, make some Polish friends on arrival and get them to help you with pronunciation.
Be aware that the majority of Poles are very religious(Roman catholic) and do not show any disrespect of their beliefs.
Should you require any more advice from an expat Scot living here, don't hesitate to..........
I think there are some great new roads in Polska , some of the old ones , especially in the cities are very dodgey , Lodz i remember has some badly rutted parts...but i see them improving all the time....despite what people say about Polish drivers i have not come close to death as i did many times in the UK on my motorcycle due to muppet drivers....
What great new roads have you got in your neck of the wood
Ha...not a lot of new ones near me , but they are repairing a lot of the bad ones...but as a truck driver i found a lot of new roads , autostrada , that are every bit as good as in the UK...
Polish drivers may have a more dangerous style, but they concentrate more on the road while driving. They also know their limits better as they more often converge towards them and are thereby more experienced. Thats how I explain it to myself - And they of course pray more often ;)
The only thing in Pl that worries me is getting bitten by a stray dog. Luckily, I've only been attacked by dogs with muzzles :) Not much really scares me in PL. I drive in NYC, so the driving doesn't phase me a bit.

Actually getting bitten by any dog in Poland worries me. I don't know about now but quite a few years ago my son was bitten by a friend's friend's dog and luckily I pack everything but the kitchen sink when I travel there as you cannot purchase over the counter antibiotic cream in Poland - you need to have a prescripton!
my cousin was robbed in a train, the robbers gassed under the door and he became unconcious so they took the money from his wallet and threw it out the window. He realized when he woke up and lucky they didn't hurt him. His friend was one to get beat up in a train and was mugged too.
I'll second that. Our friend fell asleep in a train and the robbers cut thru his leather jacket from the front while he was sleeping and took his wallet!
This post was from noimmigration...so i expect it will be some kind of insult against Polish people , or anyone non British...i should ignore it if i were you....most of us do...
