The EUCCP wants to increase minimum rate of excise on cigarettes. According to some sources prices in Poland could be higher by 46,8% (2015-16). According to eurocrats, it would reduce demand by 20% and improve health of animals on our farm.

I have only lived here 9 months and do not smoke anymore (quit back in the US 5+ years ago). But I have a question:

Will Poland add what we call a special "sin tax" to smoking and alcohol products (to help pay for the care people require after overusing these over their lifetime), or is there one already included in the price of these items now?

I am still getting used to the tax structure here and was surprised to see that these were not lots more expensive here already.

I think at home they are $5.00 US per pack now in most places (about $6.50 per pack in machines), and they all have 20 cigs per pack.

taxes are about 70% of cigarette's prize . I give you an advice;buy "GROT" or "FAJRANTY"
for 1.2 euro per box ;) and if you would smoke in your house you should open windows very, very widthly :)

Smokers cost the health service less than non-smokers because they statistically die younger and faster.

Maybe some of this texes go to national health service? We're talking about serious money, so how can you say that smokers cost whole society?

Because statistically smokes are supposed to have more illnesses related to smoking - personally I think we should put a big tax on fast food because fatties cost the health service even more!

revenue from tax off smokers is about 1billion a year...a quarter of that is spent on smoking related health problems...you do the maths..

My calculator say, that there is still 3/4 left :p These taxes are bigger only because of EU directives to level tabaco prices, not because of health problems related to smoking costs increase.

Agree!!! And get a tax discount when joining the gym ;)

To finish - a wee quote from Hancock:
And you people should sue McDonnalds, cos they f**ked you up :)

Quote from: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/background_briefings/smoking/86599.stm

It is assumed that if large numbers of smokers give up, the NHS will make substantial savings.

This is not necessarily the case. Dutch researchers have shown smokers may actually save society money because they do not live so long. The study, conducted by the Erasmus University Department of Public Health in Rotterdam, compared the health care costs of smokers to those of people of more advanced years.

They concluded that in the long run, if many people stopped using tobacco products, costs would actually rise as a healthier population eventually moved into nursing homes and into the relatively expensive diseases of old age.

They calculated the average lifetime costs of a smoking man to be $72,700 - much less than $83,400 for the non-smoking man.
