Girls living in Poland - is it safe for a girl to live alone?

I went to Poland two summers ago and I LOVED it. I'd like to move back eventually for a year or so to study music, possibly in Warsaw. From reading posts, I've learned that it seems expensive to live in Poland especially if you live alone. But is it safe for a girl to live in Poland by herself? And not just being a foreign girl, but I'm black/native american. A lot of people think I'm Middle Eastern because I have light skin, black curly hair and dark eyes. But that's beside the point, clearly I'm going to stick out. I'm super nervous but going back is still something I want to do. Good or bad idea? I know there is racial tension everywhere, but if anyone has had an experience, please let me know how it went. I just really want to be in Poland. But I don't want to risk being safe. Dziękuję. And also, people who are from Poland, how do you feel about foreigners?

From the female point of view I think this is the safest I have ever felt, anywhere.

I can understand your feeling of insecuritness, but let me tel you one thing kata that i think there is no place in this whole world which u can soo surely say is the safest place not only from female point of view but for men also. So please don't be afraid of that thing and have faith on you and the most important thing just faith on yourself.Because wht i personally think that if one has faith on himself/herself then he can easily make the unsafest place to most to most safest place in this world, just it needs a little initiative and courage and i am sure that u have it in you. So dear, keep enjoying the moments no matter whether it is in ur favour or not. Take the life as it comes and it will clear all the doubts in your mind.

Best of Luck Kata

oww Yee im from poland, poznan actually, and i know is other cities with big universites like Krakow,Wroclaw,Warszawa,Gdansk etc it not so bad for beign Foreigner, for older ppl in poland its "something" to see alot of coreingers in city cus like 10-15 yr ago there was only "few" of them prolly... For me living next to biggest dormitory around, next to big shoop(Piotr i Pawel) is just nothin i mean i stoped to notice if someone is from poland or no... cus mostly in shop is more ppl from that dormitory then poles it self... i say give poland ppl few yr more, and most of them will stop even noticing that fact too... Ofc im not blind and can see diferences , like skin, body building, language etc but my point is, i just dont care if a guy behind me in queue to till is from africa,us,asia or poland... so i belive point of viev for "most" of young normal ppl have naothing against foreigners...

from other way, psychologic thing starts to be active in topic like that, cus bein pole like 10-15 yr ago was not the funiest thing for young poles, so if u will ask some specific things that poles can say about US, and some western countries in top 10 i bet it wil be answer like "there is alot of ppl from dif nations" so below intentionally in mind comes thing if u see alot fereigners it let u feel like poland stops to be some 3rd world country.. that we belong to something biiger and better then old zsrr :P

anyway gl , hope u will enjoy ur time in poland once again ;]

heyy :) im from poland, i was born there. but i've lived in the usa my whole life. i speak it fluently. imma girl and people say i dont look polish either :P but anyways, poland, its a great place. there are tons of people from all over the world, especially at colleges/universities. many forgein exchange students and stuff like that. for the younger generation seeing someone different is nothing new, its something you see really often. no matter what race or whatever. but for the older people, they aren't that used to it, because only about 20 years ago, seeing someone that isnt polish in poland was a big thing, they were shocked. oh and not everyone speaks just polish, they speak english as well. and i think its one of the safest places to live for a female.

make sure your fears dont keep you from doing something you really want to do. :)
hope this helpedd. if you wanna know more you can totally email me: tuesday228@yahoo

k byee :)

Well, its pretty safe and there no really racial tension as people of other races are almost not existent in Poland.
Common sense would be enough !

Tuesday, 227 other people had the same idea, but its better than that plantation thread where one nut has the same idea 228 times a day.

Hi Kata,

I have been living in Krakow myself for over 2 years now and in that period of time, at least 6 girls from NL, 2 from the UK and one from France came to live by them selves for over 6 months and worked here. They all felt safe and had no issues being a woman alone.

As a guy, I can say that I feel safer in Krakow then in some cities in the Netherlands!

All the best!

Thank you so much for your posts, everyone, they're really helping a lot =)

Oh I forgot to ask, does anyone know of college student exchange programs in Poland? I'm having a very hard time finding them. Thanks!

theres racism, rapes, murders and all crimes going on in every single country and city in the world, but dont worry. if its your time to go, you'll go, so instead of worrying too much just live life and have faith. not trying to scare you im just being blunt and realistic. if you let people know you are scared, they will act upon that.

Please dont be alarmed when people stare because they will stare hard and not care, they do that because like someone said before, older people are not used to seeing in the flesh people from outside there country and aswell little kids that have not yet travelled will stare as well, but they are just kids. then again you'll get chatted up like any other girl in any other country. Poland is a beautiful country and you should enjoy your time there.
