Bisons of Poland - your thoughts?

bison range of n. am.

That is a huge range. No wonder the herds were so large with all that space. Thanks for posting the map, plk123. I could have googled but I didn't feel like messing with maps.

Yep, that answers my question about bison. This was a home where the buffalo roamed back in the day.
I typed Puma but I meant "Lynx". I thought they were Lynx sized. These at the zoo are mountain lions and when they are in their exhibit on their backs sleeping on the grass in the sun they look so sweet and loveable.

dances w/ wolves - so colorado, no?

I thought Dances With Wolves the movie was supposed to be in North or South Dakota but I could be wrong. Were the Sioux once in Colorado? I don't know where it was filmed but I think I remember seeing a show on AP where people were reintroducing wolves to places in Colorado.

I'm pretty sure there's at least one bison nearby in a pen and I see it from time to time when I drive by it. (it stays in a pen by a small highway)

my bad on the movie, it's been a while. anyway,

sioux are from upper midwest.. mn and dakotas but the horse riding buffalo hunting ones were lacotas (splinter group).. all the way to the rockies i think.

oh lynx.. rare, not as dangerous as they are very solitary with huge ranges. they are found in PL too. :)

anyone know about Żubrówka?

the stuff tastes alright tho....

Żubrówka does not taste well on it's own, it must be drunk with apple juice and apple juice only, then it is a delightful drink but be warned it can get you very drunk with out you realising it.

Yep, I have heard about the grass having been urinated on by a bison, I wonder where that Legend comes from, anyone know?

Very interesting information plk123.

When I was in Florida I saw no bears, no bison, not even an alligator. I did see tiny lizards scurrying all over the sidewalk at the apartments I lived in. I saw an alligator when I was in New Orleans and took a boat tour of a bayou.

At one time, did people use bison as a food source in Europe like they did in North America?
Plk123 that's a cute pic of a border collie, is he your pet? Border collies are cool. It would be cool to have a dog that can play frisbee.

Well you're not going to see alligator and bears on the beach in Florida, you'd have to go into the Everglades.. Just drive 45 minutes WEST.. trust me you'll see alligators.. and they'll see you.

I have seen loads of them in Florida, on the road.
We were driving from Orlando to Miami, so somewhere along the way in some kind of swampy area, I can't remember the name of the place.

i liked the raccoons best :)

But all this has nothing to do with bison, so ....

Lots of raccoons in Poland....as well as Bison bison bison....Incidentally . did you know the raccoons were introduced into Europe by a Mr Herman Goring who thought they would be good to hunt in the German forests....of course they eventually moved into Poland too.....

Racoons are little thieves and they're very smart.. smarter even than "bison". They've got little hands almost (no thumbs) can can get into all kinds of stuff..including a friends kitchen once.

I like raccoons because they are so clever and they can figure stuff out. They can get into the bison mentality with ease. Admirable.

(keeping this on topic)

Yes I know that it is a very strong drink! Thank goodness it is only a blade of grass not a worm in the Żubrówka. Thanks for your comments. Lots of great people here!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Wishing you a good year with peace, good health, much love and happiness.

Venison can be delicious, in a class of its own. Bison is pretty much just beef from a bigger kind of cow.

When I've had a bison burger I thought it was a lot better than regular beef. It tasted leaner had almost a steak like quality.

I have just had a great evening with friends.
And when I mentioned Bison the conversation exploded in to great stories about them roaming the forest and where they can be found.
A couple of things that have not been mentioned yet on here,
They cross breed Bison with cows.
And you can find Bison in Niepolomice just East of Krakow, past Wieliczka )salt mine).
Ill be making a trip out there one of these days.
They are fenced and therefore more restricted in Niepolomice but I have been assured it is not a zoo.

Is there a thread about Polish wild life?
I cant find one and there are some great stories about wolves and bears etc...

You bet, I have to find out if there is ranger or some person to show me where and when I can see the Bison first.

But I go to Niepolomice often so it should be no problem.

I know that up north they have wildlife tours, which include bison. There might be something similar in your area.

Bison Steak anyone? :) I had a steak, as well as a burger on my last trip to Yellowstone Park. They are quite tasty and really 'beef" like...many restaurants have them on the menu up there.

I still can't find a thread about wild animals in Poland.
Can it be that there is none yet?.
More than likley I am not typeing in the correct key word?.
We could of course do each animal individually but having them altogether might be more productive for people who want to know more about Poland.

And I was thinking about it, I would be willing to travel a bit around the country looking for the bats, Bison etc...
So I will start with the Bison in Niepolomice.
I don't think I would be much of a reporter but I can post photos and tell you some facts. I think a few you out there would enjoy doing something similar?.

Poland’s bison hunkering down for winter

Created: 07.01.2009 12:11
Five hundred tonnes of hay and beets have been prepared for the winter months by employees of the Bialowieski National Park (BPN) to feed Poland’s precious bison herd maintained there.

The director of the bison care facility at BPN, Jerzy Dackiewicz, claims that the recent drastic fall in temperatures means that the stocked food will be all the more necessary. The park has been feeding the bison throughout the winter months at a special feeding grounds for several years.

“If it is a light winter, we still prepare the food, but they prefer to graze naturally out in the fields and forest on grass and young trees,” added Dackiewicz.

Park employees also intend to count the herd of endangered bison this year. If such weather – cold and frost – remains, then the herd will be fully counted in two weeks and results will be announced at the end of January. Current bison-count is approximately 450 animals.

The Bialowieska National Park is an internationally recognised protected area for this breed of bison. In the year 1929, the facilities for maintaining a herd of the endangered species were opened and the herd was started with only three bison. The park extends across the Polish border into Belarus

How about Żubroń from Poland:

Zubron is a hybrid of domestic cattle and zubr. Created by Leopold Walicki in 1847.

Zubron is a hybrid of domestic cattle and zubr. Created by Leopold Walicki in 1847.

But why?.
Maybe the wild Żubr are not easily domesticated and cows have a hard time of winter so the extra coat/bulk helps? just a guess.

That first photo the Zubron has a lovely coat.

According to polish wiki the main reason to create this hybrid was a need of special kind of cattle that could live on the waselands and which doesnt need the cowsheds.
