My friend is called Anna and I believe her name day is July 26th?? I have also found reference to August 7th is this true? Does she have two name days or just one?

Many thanks for your help

She may have 2 or more namedays. My name is Małgorzata and I have 16 namedays in the year. Of course one is supposed to choose the date they want to celebrate their nameday on. if they want to celebrate it at all:)

Now thats confused me. I will have to find out what date she has chosen. I was planning on surprising her that I knew, will have to do some investigating. I have heard her mention thats she celebrates her name day just not when it is.

Hmm, I'm also confused then because I thought that you don't choose your name day, it's the first name day after your birthday.

So if her birthday is in November would it be July then?? I have also found reference to August 9th as well. This is getting very confusing... Is the a definitive list of name days anywhere??

As I understood it, your name day is the first one after your birthday so if July is the first one, then yes, I would say that is the one to celebrate.

It is confusing, some names have many names days. Some have none :(

almost every name has more than one name day in the Polish calendar, but you dont celebrate all of them, youre meant to pick one and stick to it every year.

Names are listed in polish calendars. Most of the time it is the first time the name appears after the birthday. You're right PD.

A lot of people however pick the dates which are the most popular i.e Anna. It is very popular on July 26, but not August 7. The popular dates are the ones when the patron saint is commemorated in Poland.

For the rest of us who's name is not connected with a name of some saint the 'after birthday rule' applies.

I still have none. I am also just recovering after that sudden change of avatar! ;)

Most of the time it is the first time the name appears after the birthday.

I can see why people might want to "pick" their name day but why would it mean anything just to pick it. Doesn't it mean something more if you celebrate the first one after your birthday? Or does it really not matter?

Arnie,

I think this could certainly help the very first thing you wrote.

On the new calendar in the Orthodox Christian Church the Righteous Anna's dormition (her falling asleep in the Lord) is July 25 and on the Old Calendar in the Orthodox Christian Church her dormition is on August 7th.

I have yet to find out any dates besides those two.
