The fact that your dad had a plant in Wroclaw has something to do that Wroclaw used to be Breslau?

I don't even know what to answer to your question to be perfectly honest

a lot of Polish friends of mine would love to visit Germany and maybe even work there, but when I ask them if they speak German, they answer that they don't because they hate the language.

Do they speak Dutch?
Maybe they hate it too?
(Quite a useless dialect anyway..)

I just could be so? I was just wondering, since there is a history in that city.

I liked the original poster's idea. It was designed at promoting peace and mutual respect. We can all act like little kindergarden people and sling arrows, but what good does it do?

In several places I've posted my experiences. I am an American who did not know much about her roots. German and Polish grandparents who emmigrated to the USA early 1900's.

I've learned a lot about history and all the conflict that has marked the area. And it breaks my heart for both sides. I am so happy Poland is a nation again. Not too many people could survive belonging to three different countries and come out as a united people.

I feel badly that some ethnic Germans who were Polish citizens (like my German side of he family), lost their home. I feel terrible that some colaborated with the Nazis. I feel terrible that some Poles treated all loyal ethnic Germans like the enemy. It happens. Same thing with Japanese Americans during WWII.

It is kind of sad to me that people who lived in Poland and wanted to stay had to leave, but I can even despite the suffering, see why. It was better to get rid of all the claims to Polish soil. However,

Now we are in a new day with EU and people move around. Hopefully, they will forgive the past. And learn to respect each other. Holding on to bitterness is bad for people. It is good to educate what happened. Many in the USA are totally unaware of Polish lives lost due to Russia and Germany, and many are totally unaware of how ethic Germans (the loyal ones) suffered, too.

I am very proud of both my Polish and German heritage. Let's all see the good in each other, while learning about the past to avoid it happening again.

I have no idea why Wroclaw. I would assume though that it was more so due to its location or other benefits not because it used to be Breslau. My dad was actually born in France. Granddad went to what became east germany just after the war (why I have no idea but have been told he has been quite the socialist person) so there wasnt any connection between my dad and Wroclaws history

Nobody asked them if they want ... Stalin told take this houses or die.

Nobody asked the Silesian Germans if they wanted to leave. They either expelled them or raped/killed them. This is actually not a very nice part of Polish history, I wonder if the Poles consider their behaviour towards the Silesian Germans in the post-war years still as being justified or do they look back at this episode in shame?

Nope...please explain!

What to explain, people who live on west don't fear Germans ... they don't like them but there is no fear or mithical view of German theutons. I think eastern Germans are more Pholonophobic than western Poles Germanophobic. People who live in western part of Poland + people from big towns on east are more pragmatic.

New polls show that now PO has support close to 60% and PiS about 19% so this maps soon are going to be history.

Germans were raped by Russians ... later some Poles expelled rest of them ... it is true. Once again it wasn't Polands decison ... and I am sure that we would have Kosovo here ... if Stalins decision have been different.

What with the upcoming ethnic mixing in the EU?
In the coming decades people will mix alot and settle in other countries..I think it will work peacefully.

German theutons

But that's the way the cookie crumbles: wars of Germany in the East have always been different than German wars in the West: in the East it was a clash between races: Teutons against Slavs, while in the West it was Germans against Germans; hence German wars in the East have always been more brutal than German wars in the West. Not only in WW2, but also in WW1, which had a more nasty character than the trench-war in the West.

Actually on the note of the name "World War": as a historian, I don't like the term World War 1 and 2 for Germany's attempts to gain hegemony (although WW1 was more of an opportunity by chance due to the last twitches of the dying empire of Austria-Hungary) as France's attempts to gain hegemony in the late 18th, early 19th century were basically also turning into World Wars, considering what was perceived as the World at that time. So, a better description of the conflicts between 1914 and 1945 -the 30-year war of the 20th century- would be WW2 and WW3, strictly speaking.

we know dreams of German nationalists ;) ... but it looks that some Germans wants to live here ... and when prices of land are equal or even more expensive than in Germany ... we can have competition ... ;)

Poznan has much different expirience with Germans ... than other parts of Poland, all in all Poznan won over the Germans in economic struggle (when you will be in Poznan you will notice that there are old Polish banks and old German banks, old Polish theatres and old German theaters ...) and Merkel grandfather is Pole from Poznan. Personaly I don't like Germans ... we will see what will happen.

Really? What's your source on that?

Her father is Horst Kasner, her mother is Herlind Jentzsch, her grandparents on her mothers side lived in Elbing, East Prussia - that doesn't make them polish!

Would you mind telling us why?

I have been to Germany several times, maybe it will sound funny but there was German family who helped Polish resistace durring WWII and they could stay in Poland after the war ... in 70's they left Poland and moved to western Germany because of economic reasons ... my family visted them and their us, Generaly Germans don't like Polish people and it is easy to notice.

Erm...and Poles leaving Poland to settle elsewhere are then also mean spirited "polish nationalists"?

German tourists when visit Poznan go to see his house Grunwaldzka 63 (funny name ;) ) Merkel said for The Zeit that when she has melancholic mood she thinks it is her Polish blood. Ok I did't want to say oh look we have German chancelor ... I find it interesting ;)
