DomPolski 7 | 33 11 Jul 2008 / #1Theres something I'm a little confused about, the term cygan means someone of Roma origin or something along those lines doesn't it? Well the other day I was searching through some Polish folk and in particular Goral music and looking at videos like these,People are saying that these are cygan music, why so? It's traditional Goral polish folk.Is there something I'm not getting that could be explained.Cheers

Quite a mix-up. And I really don't know why they're wearing those clothes. Here you've got some typical highlander folk, for comparison:
OP DomPolski 7 | 33 11 Jul 2008 / #4Ok Thanks for the answers. Is it a true statement to say that Polish music, culture has cygan influence? Searching through youtube I see a lot of Poles singing this music
Switezianka - | 463 18 Jul 2008 / #5Some people are fascinated by Romani culture and there are some Romani music festivals in Poland, but I wouldn't say there are a lot of influences of Romani music on Polish music. Sometimes you can hear some gypsy-inspired folk songs or sung poetry, some stuff of a gypsy girls in love etc. but this appears in the form of a stylization. Even if Romani elements are incorporated into Polish music, they remain an alien element.

Switezianka - | 463 4 Aug 2008 / #10Oh, that means that we can also talk about African, Australian or Tibetan influences in Polish music. It's enough to listen to Karpaty Magiczne discography.
