Hi,

Im a young businessman who is looking at opening a restaurant/coffee house in warsaw later this year. I am an British EU national and am looking at starting a chain of these. How do i go about starting a restaurant in Poland, who costs are assigned to it, and does anyone know about how shop Leasing works in poland?

i would be grateful. I am also interested in finding someone polish to help set up the business and in return receive a % of the profits from the business. Please email or IM me if your interested. I am planning on moving to Warsaw in late september and start from scratch, which a hope of having something open by January.

poles aren't that big on coffee.. a tea house may go better especially if it's an english kind as there aren't any like that in PL.

O RLY? I would say they like coffee more than tea, but it's the type of coffee that most foreigners dislike, the one with grounds in it, strong as hell (Turkish coffee it's called, even though it's not actually brewed the Turkish way).

Oh dear... seems like a rather ambitious project for someone who does not appear to have much of a clue about Poland.

As bubbaWoo says, be very careful. In short, if you are not on the ball, you could lose the lot. Some of the threads on here show examples.

Hello Adam,

My advice is for you to hire a lawyer who can find you the details. Normally you need to get approvals from the sanepid department which is the equivalent of the Sanitary department in English. However the Sanepid department might not be very helpful or organized for you to have the info you need. Best is to hire a lawyer to do it for you. Warsaw is expensive and rents are also high. Then you need to get your staff and cooks who need to all get vaccinations etc in place. The kitchen has to meet specific standards depending on what you are doing.

I am sure a polish partner will be a must. It would further be better if the polish partner is financially committed with you. I am not a specialist at the restaurant business but keeping in view the strong zloty and several options available to clients make sure what you are doing. Two big clubs, Nostalgia and Foksal 19 closed in Warsaw. I am cannot guarantee this information is 100% correct, but that is what i have heard. If thats true, something is not right.

Regards,

Mash

Adam

have any famous chefs gone there?? i don't know off hand but if not, then i should think that is a pretty clear example of a no go area :). Maybe you can combine with Gordon Ramsay and do the Hell's Kitchen edition for Poland, now that would be something.
