in America there are several cities that require permits to perform music on the streets. are there any laws like this in Poland? particularly Poznan?

There is a police station in Rynek... ask there... I have no idea if you need a licence or not... better to be safe than sorry.

You actually need a permission - you can receive it from the Cultural Division of the Municipal Office. As far as I know it should be pretty easy. You basically have to fill in this application form:

wrosystem.um.wroc.pl/beta_4/webdisk/71ffe4eb-9e18-4da3-8be1-1319f4f20a 6f/rynek_wniosek.pdf

I don't know if there is an English version of this document, though.

I was very impressed with the street performers in Poland - chamber quartets playing Mozart was not unusuall- much better that the usual pennny whistle and scabby dog you get here.

Yes, when we were in Krakow <some years ago> we were very impressed as well. Some of the music was tremendous :)

Merged: Street Musicians in Poland

Is Poland big on street musicians?...Are there many?...And are they good?...In the US. cities like New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, Chicago and maybe Boston have a good number, with a range from terrible, to clever, to excellent...In my city, we have a good variety, but finding a good spot is always a problem, and Philadelphia PA isn't necessarily the most cosmopolitan of cities...Europe is supposed to be much better: When i lived in London, I didn't find many...I include an article of mine about my own experiences.

Street musicians in Poland are of a very high standard. Its not unusual to see a chamber quartet playing on the street.

A Polish friend told me they were licensed but I dont know how they are regulated.

Chimney Sweep is a popular ( whatever the name is for people that stand still like statues ).
