when a child I remember old men calling old women "stoddy" or "stodja" babcias. I am not sure that is the spelling but that is the sound I remember. Is that something similar and what is the meaning?

Yes, possibly it was "stara" (woman) or "stary" (man), or in some dialects "story" (man), so you probably have remembered "story" (it sounds similar to "stoddy"), but who knows :)

And the meaning is "old".
