how to distinguish between hard and soft consonants properly?

how? do u do this by positioning your mouth or tongue in a certain way? 4 example, i have a hard time pronouncing the hard consonants. i think to me, that 'grać' and 'gracz' are pronounced the same, at least as far as my ability goes which ends up being 'grać'. and then i think i pronounce 'szef' as 'śef' or 'żona' as 'źona' etc.

Try to move your tongue - for the soft consonants the tip is flat somewhere in between the small gap between the teeth; for harder ones the back of the tongue slightly curles backward and and the tip retracts quite abruptly. Does it help? :P
