[Yet another] "The best place to start learning."

Hi, just introduced myself in introductions so guess now I'll start with the questions. (I wont expain again why I joined just read my intro :-) )

Having never really learned another language before i'm at a loose end on where to start. I have trouble speaking English sometimes let alone another language (you will probably find about 30 spelling mistakes in this to start with !) I ordered an audio cd / book from ebay a few weeks ago and so far im not really impressed with it. Its basicaly just a book with basic phrases in and a cd which says them to you, nothing on how to pronounce things ect....

So where's the best place to start. Learning the Polish alphabet and how to pronounce letters first ? learning how to pronounce the basics ? and are there any good resources out there to start with, i.e. books, cd's, online lessons.

I don't want to start posting translation requests for basic stuff and would rather learn myself and make the effort first before requesting (and only doing when I get stuck)

So...any suggestions would be very very welcome and thanks in advance :-)
