Winters in Poland CAN BE harsher than in the British Isles but not necessarily. With the exception of 2005, I have experienced many colder winters back home.

Exactly - UK winters may not be colder in terms of numbers, but they feel much worse because they are damp. Same principles as kriotherapy, which I had last time I was in Poland...

Winters in Poland are far harsher than in the British Isles, whether one is clad in Versace, Benneton, Gucci or Made in China stuff.

I've experienced -20 in Moscow and was absolutely fine wearing Mulberry and Gap... if I remember rightly. I think that my suit was by DKNY too...

Fashions are pretty much the the same in Warsaw as they are everywhere else in the world. You've got all the usual suspects, H&M... Zara... Benetton etc.

Having said that, I tend to dress a bit on the conservative side when I'm in Poland.

No need for a crystal ball, just look at the big picture. Business 101, where can you get the raw materials, and who is going to buy the product. What is trade like between neighboring countries? What is the government pushing for regarding trade/tax policies.

You might be expecting a bit much from this forum. Want tips of things to see and do in Warsaw? Need a hotel in Krakow? - sure, we can help you out there, no probs.

But you are going to need to cultivate your own industry contacts in Poland if you are to move there.

Language / WHY IS @ CALLED MAŁPA IN POLISH? [13]

German is Affenklammer - literal translation is monkey bracket.

Russian is Sobaka... sorry, can't write cyrilic on here, but it means dog.

French - arobase, though no idea of the literal meaning.

Swedish is snabel-a, which literally means "A with a trunk"

I've heard that the Finnish translation means "cat".

You'd really want me in your pub quiz team :)

I just believe in a fair day's pay for a fair day's work.

Come on... you get accommodation, food, access to a washing machine and everything else - even a lift to and from the airport if you ask nicely. I've heard of some au pairs being taken on holiday - all paid for.

No, no, no.... you are missing the point of being an au pair. It is not a career move. It's an experience when you're young. I went to Italy for 3 months when I was 17 - I got to spend an entire Summer in Italy, eating great food (prepared by the grandmother of my "employers"), learning Italian and taking the kids to the park. It was a chance to travel and see a boit of the world, but with the stable base of a family.

Nobody tends to be an au pair for more than a year or two.

You should just move to a better, happier family as I think you should be really enjoying your stay here in UK :)

You have to really get to know a country first. That means seeing different sides of it and meeting different kinds of people.

Don't read too much into it if his English isn't particularly fluent.

On the flip side, you can be more direct and ask if he fancies you without feeling too awkward, as there's no cultural connotations / semantics (or whatever the term is).
