UK, Ireland / The Poles are Coming documentary [38]
I'd be surprised if it's a 'balanced' account. They'll be going for maximum sensationalism to attract higher ratings. The fact remains, that most decent people that have met Poles in the UK have nothing but respect and admrationof them. How many of the lazy scroungers in this country would have the balls to 'up stcks' and get a plane to get a better paid job.
BTW, Yes St George, I'd like a large fries with that!

Real Estate / Deals available from Polish property developers [40]
The ones I am looking at yes, but they are few and far between and you point is well made. I agree there are alot of properties that need refurbishment that are being sold at nearly the same price/sqm as those already done, but I put that down to advise from greedy agents that see an opportunity to rip off niave foriegn investors. Not sure if these prerties are selling as fast in Warsaw, as you say is happening in Tricity though.
And to be honest if people are stupid enough to buy something for an inflated price because they haven't done their homework then I have no sympathy.
As everywere else, there are bargins to be had, but you have to look off the beaten track and know what you are doing. Anyone that thinks it's easy to make a quick buck in the property game is sadly mistaken. It's hard work and time consuming, but yes if you get it right, the rewards make it worth while.

I believe prices will dip in 2008 because of this - only temporarily as long term demand and supply are clearly going to cause prices to rise. Cheesy though it is I have to say we have "a window of opportunity"!!

Food / Fresh Cranberries for a Christmas dinner in Warsaw? [6]
Thanks evryone. I need fresh cranberries not the ones in a jar, so i'll try the fruit and veg markets. That would have been my first thought anyway, but was told that there aren't any in Warsaw (fresh crannberries not fruit and veg markets!).
Will be flying out of Friday, so should have time to find some. Here's the recipe if anyone interested.
Cranberry stuffed apples
230g jar cranberries sauce
50g fresh or defrosted cranberries
6 medium Cox or Braeburn apples
25g butter
2 tsp golden caster sugar
Mix the cranberry sauce and cranberries in a bowl. Cut a thin slice off the bottom of the apples. Score the skin all round their middles, then tunnel out the stalks and cores. Stand the apples on a shallow baking tray. Pile the cranberry mix into the cavities, top with a dot of butter and scatter over the sugar. Heat oven to fan 180C/conventional 200C/gas 6. Bake the apples for 20-30 minutes until soft and starting to split and the cranberries are oozing juice.
Had some help from my Warsaw friends.................I should be able to get everything I need here:

You could try the magazine "Dom Lenti" published by Murator. widely avaliable in newsagents across Poland. No website unfortunately
Though I would always recommend employing an architect to design the house for it's specific location. If you by a 'flat pack' design, it will always look like it has just been dropped onto the site without any consideration for it's surroundings.
Speak to a few local architects that have experience of building private dwellings and ask them what their fees would be and how much a new build house will cost.
You may find it works out cheaper to do it properly, than go for a one of the 'standard' designs. It should also be worth more if the architect is any good.
Contact The National Chamber of Architects of the Republic of Poland - IARP. They should be able to give you a list of local architects.

It may take a bit of time, but you can find them if you know where to look.
From my recollection 2006 prices were 12-15,000/sqm. you can find some now at below 10,000/sqm
Don't take my word for it - see for yourself.
You could also try Mamdom.
Not had any dealings with them but seem to remember a forum member (sorry can't remember their name) having a good experience and getting help with a mortgage.
