Genealogy / Searching Domaslaw, near Wroclaw [3]

It's south-south-west of Wroclaw between Bielany Wroclawskie and Kobierzyce and does not appear to be a particularly large village. There seems to be a web page for it though.

Genealogy / Polish Contract labor in Hawaii 1896 to 1899 [15]

I have no info about the topic but I have to say, it sounds very interesting! I was not aware of there being a Polish presence of any size in Hawaii.

Genealogy / Polish Contract labor in Hawaii 1896 to 1899 [15]

There was a Polish explorer by the name of Count Pawel Strzelecki who made a brief visit here in the early days of the Hawaiian Kingdom, in 1838.

Boy, I'm really learning some new stuff in this thread!

Genealogy / Question about surname changes during immigration [11]

Would'nt the passenger manifests which were filled out BEFORE the ship arrived in the US have the correct name and spelling? You'd need to know what day they arrived on and what ship though just to narrow the search range.

It also could be that the surname was mis-spelt on the arrival entries which has hampered my own searches.

Genealogy / Where do I get Poland Birth Certificate [27]

Should be relatively straightforward.

Check where the person was born and where the parish archives are currently kept. You should be able to get a photocopy or the original birth record and a certified copy.

Genealogy / Question about surname changes during immigration [11]

I'll take a look at it over the weekend and see if I can make anything out.............I have the same problem myself.

Could you help me decifer an address on ellisisland.org

I'm looking at the manifest and even when magnified it is practically impossible to read, the ink having blotted into the paper when it was written.

What little I can decipher is..........

----- -----islaw --li--wicz
1008 -ec---- & -- (St ??) ----- ---
brother il

In hindsight after playing around with the magnification........

1008 Second Street & St Louis ---

Genealogy / Searching for my Father- Help Please! [14]

I wish I had more than just the pronunciation

And American pronunciation to boot. There must be some documentation somewhere? Have you asked your parents if there is any paperwork with the name or at least the paperwork will lead you in that direction?

Genealogy / Searching for my Father- Help Please! [14]

Is your mother still alive? Have you tried asking her what the name was? Where did he work? Did anyone else know him or know of him? Have you asked members of your mother's family or family friends / neighbours? A off the wall lead like that may be your best bet. Other than that I've only ever heard about "other channels" to get the sort of info you're looking for but don't know of any.
