Love / Looking for outsiders opinions - I met a girl online... [24]

Here's a suggestion.............run, run for the hills and don't look back.

Being good hearted and concerned for her will only get you in trouble. I will not even bother to try and understand what her problems are. This can only give YOU unbelievable problems and stress.

BTW how old are you?

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

My Dad, sister and myself have spent years tracing our family roots and there's been some interesting results - including a link to the British in India.

That sounds really interesting

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

Unfortunately my search was much more difficult. I had to use a research office in Warsaw and freelancers in Maryland and Lwow. I only started getting results when the Warsaw office started making "cold calls".

Things are complicated by my great (x6) grandfather who had 12 children with 3 different wives, so there are 3 sub-branches of the family (and lots of 1/2 cousins).

Currently I am trying to determine how many other family members (12 so far) who migrated to the US. Quite a few seem to have headed to Detroit.

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

I've been researching my father's family tree for the past 5 years now. It currently stands at over 450 persons dating back to approx 1690-1710. More interestingly I've been able to locate living relatives who I never even knew about before living in Warsaw, Szczecin, Detroit and British Columbia.

Travel / Nice spa south of Wroclaw? Suggestions? [6]

There are a few spa villages in the Klodzko area. I've only been to Polanica Zdroj but it's quite pretty. You can check out the Willowa hotel. I have the website address somewhere and will post it later.

Sorry for the delay!

Travel / Going to Wroclaw next week - good eats? [13]

Ah, I wish I was in Wroclaw again!

There is a nice coffee shop at the north-eastern corner of the Rynek. The cakes are good. There are a few coffee shops but I've only ever been in this one. There is also one on the road (on the LHS) that leaves the Rynek (Wita Stwosza) and heads out towards Dominikanski.

Travel / Fly to Poland [32]

Has anyone flown through Gatwick on their way to Poland? What's it like? I'm accustomed going through Heathrow but our airline no longer does this and I have to go through Gatwick.

I know the connections ex Gatwick are nowhere as good as Heathrow and I will probably have to over night in Gatwick on my way to Poland.

Travel / Good places (romantic too) to go in Wroclaw [14]

It's also only 15 minutes walking to the Rynek. And yes, the prices are quite good. I only ate in the restaurant a few times. Food was very good though. Every day we were in the Rynek trying a different restaurant each day. The evenings was home cooked meals with family.

Sightseeing: Ostrów Tumski (the Cathedral, the island itself which is a jewel ;)

In 2005 I stayed out at the Hotel Tumski. It's a really pretty area, the churches are all in easy walking distance.

News / What do Poles think about the newly elected French president? [30]

my problem with France is that it is so very self serving...........prepared to deals with anyone....not the most reliable state....at times......

Heard the joke at the start of the 1st Gulf War?

As Iraq crossed the Kuwaiti border..........France surrendered!

Genealogy / When did Poles adopt surnames? [27]

2.3% ? Bloody hell.

According to a 1990 surname survey there were only 52 persons in Poland with my surname.

Genealogy / When did Poles adopt surnames? [27]

I find that odd. The first Census in Austrian Empire - southern Poland had all the surnames listed for each family. That was 1797.

I have copies of the birth records for the Sokal parish dating back to approx. 1781 and earlier which gives my family's surname and others in the town,

Love / My girlfriend is polish [43]

My ex-girlfriend has a lot of family in Holland. They were originally from Suriname. Where they live and work has quite a few Poles and they speak very glowingly about them. They are described as being polite, friendly and hard working.

Love / My girlfriend is polish [43]

This year is 10 years since I started using the damn thing. There are some (few) upsides to it. You get through airports much more quickly. My brothers now make sure they are with me so all of us get through customs and immigration before everyone else. Also it's nice when you are behind a woman who has a great ass:) It is my dream to be behind Jennifer Lopez in a long, long line.

Now I feel like crap......you're not mad are you Peter???

No.
