History / What if scenario´s for WW2 and Poland [112]

Vetala,

I do agree with U, maybe it is all to hypothetically and Poles would never have given up. Unlike Czech they resisted in 1939 and that is why WW2 started officially, if they wanted to collaborate against Soviets they could have done that in summer of 1939 already, and became a satellite of germans just like czechs (in 1939)

Czech hardly had resistance not even partisans. Poland had and have stronger identity.

History / What if scenario´s for WW2 and Poland [112]

Winston churchill deeply distrusted Stalin and he was very much against communism.

England was not free from nationalism and fascist elements in their society, they would have joined forces against Russia yes with British Empire intact and still ruling the world, a less big role for the US and Western Europe under influence of fascist Italy and Germany,

The Germans would have been stopped at the Weichsel, Poles Germans and English have found peace with Russia.

Russia if they would not have won the war in the Far east (against Japan) would not have had so many troops to fight Hitler, US would have helped Japan against Russia in Far East and Russia attacked on two fronts forced to sign peace and not have been that powrful nation they became in 50's.

Would the world have been a better world? We would not have heard about concentration camps and the majority would have disliked Jews and not given them the role of martyrs they have now.

Strange to think about alternative scenario's What if. The world of 2010 was still very much determined by what actually did happen

History / What if scenario´s for WW2 and Poland [112]

What if....Germans would have won the war.... (see old thread Auschwitz sign stolen)

An assumption could be that Poles would have been moved to the East or work as servants in the GG (General Gouvernement) district, with young Polish kids sended to germany to be re educated (especially blond haired Poles with blue eyes) and shaped as a new German.

At the moment im reading 'The rise and fall of communism' by Archie Brown (prof at Oxford in history of the communist era) He has some explanations about the invasion of Russia in Poland. When communists came to power a few decades long they wanted to make the inhabitants believe that actually Russia did good job protecting the Poles from Nazi-Germany

The facts of Katyn were known by British government immediately but kept secret to keep uncle Joe as force against Nazi's. Attacking Germany was the decision probably that made Germany loose the war. Because if all these forces could be used to overthrow England it might be a division between Hitler Europe and Stalin Europe with united States still as a powerful block but not necessarily interested in Europe

Life / Pasowanie (knighting) [7]

Vetala,

Im the kind of person that takes nothing for granted.

there are more slavic folkloristic habits, for me is to easy to stop exploration and say o just fun and has no meaning. In holland we had with Sinterklaas Black Pete''s who were wearing willow rods to make kids scared. But nowadays they do not have them anymore because it might scare kids, always there is meaning of even the smallest details, at least to my opion.

And with google it is al so easy to find information fast:

source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanking#cite_note-31

(Folkloristic spanking traditions)

In Latvia on palm sunday mornings, ritual spankings:
spankee's bedroom and wakes him or her up. The whipping is done with ***** willow branches or (rarely) birch. This ritual spanking is often applied to the bare buttocks.

On Easter Monday, there is a Slavic tradition of hitting girls and young ladies with woven willow switches (Czech: pomlázka; Slovak: korbáè) and dousing them with water.

In Slovenia, there is a jocular tradition that anyone who succeeds in climbing to the top of Mount Triglav receives a spanking or birching.[31]

Life / Pasowanie (knighting) [7]

Jowita,

Many thanks for explanation. If i would form some thoughts on the meaning of this rite of passage i would conclude: a spanking by your friends when you pass by the age of 18 would mean you tresspassed your youth and are adult now.

because what i saw on you Tube is mostly friends delivering some slaps with raised belts under somoe cheerful applause.

So need for corrective spankings from parents or educators,

That would also conclude that Polish kids are under a firm parenting rule till 18 and spanking is quite common, which is quite on the contrary compared to many other European countries.

Is it therefor a rite to break free from parental control and power.

Who recognises this 'Pasowanie' i havent heard any about before where im already for quite few years in Poland (but not amongst the 18 years old)

Life / Pasowanie (knighting) [7]

It is a bit different Vetala,

See on Youtube there are several movies about it and it sounded so strange to me that i decided to ask here what it is about:

if you search Pasowanie on You Tube you can see for yourself,

giving spankings for birthdays, when you get 18 years old?

Smigus Dyngus i know but not this other in my view weird habit.

Can anyone explain me why this is part of Polish culture, where it comes from, what is the meaning of it, is there a link with the Easter celebrations in Czech, where they hit girls and women on second Easter day for purposes of 'fertility'?

Love / Are Polish women too controlling? [106]

Sly and cunning, i dont judge those as positive characteristics of a woman in general, so in other words you say Polish women are more pure of heart and cooperative in their relation,

that does not make them more controlling but easier to be handled by a guy, but also less attractive, because guys wanna see al the dangers manipulations and tough sides of girls as well.

Happily my Polish girl that is from the capital has some slyness as a fox in her as well.

The village girls from Poland are those the ones you find back in western european calendars for men to be picked by who ever writes the first?

And they promise a loving romantic good life, good in cooking good in housekeeping
Many of those first generation Polish women came to Holland, just to escape the misery of the villagelife in Poland, a guy that i interviewed this year about it, told me.

did i mention lack of sense of humor?

History / Good Polish History resource (book), any suggestions? [11]

Of course there are books of the more recent history,

Poland under communism describes the period of Solidarnosc and the economical changes after 89 in detail. Bought this book last year.

Poland under communism, a cold war history

Love / Are Polish women too controlling? [106]

Strange topic. Are Polish women to controlling. It sounds like a contradictio in terminis.

The person that assumes this is looking probably trough the glasses of his own relation to the rest of the world. In general Polish women are submissive, docile, at first. The longer a relation lasts the more they show of themself. So you could end up with a more controlling girl compared to the one you started with, but hey, wren't you there all the time letting it happen. Polish girls love a traditional man,

see the works of lodz kaliska (may men rot) to understand the debate on feminism in poland
