Love / Rules for dating Polish girls [189]

Polish women like all eastern europeans become very greedy. As they get older they will start to want better and better cars and want larger houses. It is human nature and Polish women are no exception. They are now free after fifity years of communism and when they come to the west it corrupts the soul. Polish women are just the same as any body else. I do not know what you mean by 'a Polish lady who can serve me well' it could be used to mean anything but I can imagine!

Language / Should I learn both Polish and German [147]

Most scandinavians would be insensed as they probably know English better than most of the English! I have never met a lot of Icelanders in New York or London so can not say for certain. Surely, at the end of the day it is a personal thing. If someone loves linguistics and thinks that they can speak well then they do not like criticism. In England the English hate negative comments about their driving but is this a racial thing or is it in all of us? I think that it is in human nature rather than a border issue.

for english to speak polish though?

The Polish accent in English is fantastic - its alot harder I think for english to speak polish though

Polish should not really be a problem for English speakers as Polish is quite phonetic. If someone is bad at learning to speak Polish they are probably not very good at anything else.

Polish is much easier than Russian when it comes to pronunciation so you can read any word in a dictionary. The stress is always in the same position too.

In the long term Polish is a waste of time as it is a shrinking world language. As all the talent and young leave Poland to live abroad. They say that we have 600,000 in England-I do not know if that is in the U.K. and Ireland as well but Chinese or Arabic would be better. A lot of hard work with little or no return. I must say from my own experiences too that the Czech's seem to be more 'on the ball' too. I have always found the Polish to be a little rude and aggressive. I have always prefered the Slovaks and Czechs myself, though, of course, that is just me. Maybe a visit to Prague and have a command of the language would be time better spent.

Actually it is interesting to read the title of a book 'things not to say to learners' as I was a student of TESOL some years ago and we had to be like guinea pigs learning Finnish. Our teacher was Finnish herself and we found the language difficult to learn especially as we had no written material. She said once in class to a question as to where Finnish was spoken "it is really quite useless for you all" and with that I switched off because if she is saying it is useless why should I bother? However, Polish does fall in to the same category and it is a marginalized area now as the young get out of Poland in droves.

Travel / anyone been to Piotrków Trybunalski? [24]

I think that there are quite a lot of murders all over Poland. I have been shown several times where a house especially in the countryside, has been broken into and the occupants have been murdered. It happened once near Bochnia (near Krakow) and another time near Deblin (near Warsaw) but there must be many more.

You have to remember that Polish women have dreadfull tempers like the Italians! They are never easy to live with and get decidedly worse with age!

am native to the Uk, I speak Polish as well, when I was in Poland last I was surprised at the amount of English words that are used, for eg, fast food, super, take away, and stuff like that

Yes, I have already mentioned comming by bus in to the centre of Warsaw and seeing all the biil boards with advertisments with loads of English words. The Polish have little pride in their language and it is become dreadful to see how they have allowed their language to become a hybrid! Polish will be like Latin soon and will be almost a dead language.

Language / Formal and Informal Greetings in Polish [21]

Kopę lat! meaning: I haven’t seen you for ages!

Kopa lat is in fact an old Polish word for sixty but the expression kopa lat is not used now except in the countryside.

Here are they:

Here they are and not here are they!

In England near to where I live we have a large number of people with origins in Pakistan. Are we all therefore to learn Urdu with the Arabic writing? We have Chiese and Arabs too so before Polish we have a long way to go. In Guildford we used to have a lot of Czechs, that is, up until the time that the Poles could work in England legally, but it is rare to hear the language now. 600,000 is actualy not so many as

some will be temerary as many will earn money and move on back home or even further afield to Australia and France. I agree, that spending a lot of time on a minority language would be time badly spent.

As there are a million Welsh speakers it could be argued that Welsh should be compulsory before Polish. And no, there are more Polish people in Chicago than there are in England. Polish is of a minority interest value in England.

You do, as I would like to quote what you have written above, 'Anyone says that everyone in the UK should learn Polish'.

My question is why should anyone in the U.K. have to learn Polish?

I waas not spreading************before that. In fact, it was Telefonitika who wrote...'apparently 80% of the U.K. population is Polish anyway it was on a radio station news bulletin'. How can 80% of the U.K. population be Polish?

i was not stating that i think 80% of the uk population is polish ok

However, that is exactly what you said.

I work in a supermarket. They now have a whole section for polish food

Yes, in fact we have a section in our local Tesco store here in Guildford. Perhaps you also work for the same supermarket? I expect in fact that Telefonitika has a limited understanding of English and did not understand what was being said. Talking about the Polish Language-you do not even need Skype, there are many excellent books on the market, one of them was B. Mazur, Colloquial Polish series though it has been rewritten since my copy came out in the early 1980's. I have a copy and read the book before taking G.C.S.E. Polish in London and got an A so it can be done. I might go to Prague next so will learn Czech too. These languages are not very difficult to learn.

Language / Five Commandments for Polish Language Learners [36]

Errare humanum est! Accept yourself as imperfect; you will make mistakes

I never make mistakes and got an A grade in G.C.S.E. and ditinction in the institute of Linguists grade 3 examination, distinction in both the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry NVQ 3 and N.V.Q. level 4 examinations in Business Polish-all with distinction. I have never had any problem with learning Polish and speak it all the time with my Polish wife at home.

who said you were the English teacher of the forum anyway??

I have never been a teacher. I said that in the year 2000 I completed a course in teaching English to speakers of other languages called TESOL with the board Trinity College, London. I have a certificate but have never taught. I tak, jestem bardzo bardzo przystojny i inteligentny.

There is nothing posh or arrogant about a Tesol certificate-it is the most basic level of teaching qualification that exists and I have never worked in this field of work and I never started this discussion in the first place though I can not remember who it was. End of this discussion please.
