Travel / Places to visit near Czech border, help please. [27]

Me and two friends plan to visit poland in early july. The idea being to visit the czech rep and then a few towns in poland reasonably near the border. ( ie an hours train journey or approx 60 KM).

Anyone like to recomend anywhere ? What we would like is.

Places that are not full with tourists, or at least British tourists as it will not seem like a holiday ( i am English and live in UK).

Somwhere where there is a bit of night life ie a couple of clubs and a few bars.

Fair price for accomadation.

If anything comes to mind please let me know.

History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

yes it could have been worded better " ashamed". more ..." take a realistic view".

I really hate " PC" by the way. I have just recently took up a job for local government in a Town Hall loactated in East End of London. Talk about political correctness, you can see where the country has gone wrong over the last few years.

Anyway must go it's 09:45. At 10:00 ive got to raise the Ghanian flag outside town hall to celebrate " Ghanian independance day". The mayor will also read a prescripted speech. The same speech as last weeks flag raising (can't remember country) and the week before and the week before etc etc. The only difference being the speech stays the same but the blank spaces are replaced with the relevant country.

Oh and also today is the last day of London Borough of XXXX Lesbian Gay and Transexual Month so at miday have to take down the Rainbow flag. Funny no speech from the major for that one.

Notice how I feel the need to XXXX out the boroughs name, this for a reason. Sad really, yes the country is PC mad PC ruined. We should start a thread on this, comparison of PC in Poland and UK.

History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

I am quite fair: When you look at the UK history and the Commenwealth this is a part of our history where we should feel ashamed about our past ( basically sailing half way accross the world, invading countries, taking as much as we can and giving back nothing. These countries have still not recovered. However even till this day the UK Government still advertise this as a great piece of British history and triumph.

What I don't undertand is .....the Russian folk I know refuse to talk or even accept things that have happened in thier recent history. It is as if somthing like " If we don't like the truth then forget the truth and it will go away". For some reason is seems uncomfortable to look at reality. Reality being basic facts relating to history which are laid on the table and you can't change. I would be interested in your opinion on this.

History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

I just don't get, although i try.

There are some simple facts relating to history which are documented and can't be changed. Millions of Ukranians missing presumed dead. Millions of Lithuanians missing presumed dead, Millions of Latvians Mission presumed dead, Millions of East Germans missing presumed dead. This subject has come accross with the Russian guys at work. They are of the opinion that this is simply not true. They are either completely brain washed and serioulsy believe that this never happended or for some reason feel it is somthing they must lie about. This is what I find ridiculous,. As if a false society has been created, all must believe that the society works well, anyone who challenges this must be swept under the carpet.

no it's probably because at work and to a certain extent out of work i rub shoulders / hang around with them. They simply know nothing outside there tiny little world. Telling lies and covering up the truth ( even if very obvious) seems to be a national hobby. Other than that they are ok.

no i am saying that the general mindset of russians is very idiotic, however they no, no difference. They tried to impose an idiotic and unworkable system on satelite countries ( Poland, Czech) which was doomed to failure from the start.

History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

I know some russian people very well, there is a side of them which i dislike very much and also a side which i like. Such is the complexity of thier makeup that it is very hard to put into words.

On the whole they are childish ( children in adult bodies). Will unashamebly lie when it suits them, deny somthing happend when it suits them, never admit they are wrong ( because it is a sign of weekness), never apologise ( because it is a sign of weekness). There opinion is alwlays correct. They are generally childish, arrogant and ignorant. This is a product of a nation where all freedom of choice and thought are removed. A system of total governmental mass control. Such was the extent of this that these traits are still visible today. Basically a product of an false and unhealthy society. There bigest trait ( and most amusing is) " If i do not want to belive X or Y then I do not have to, even if the facts are staring me straight in the face". Having said all that I still do actually like them, strange as it may seem."

Love / I would love to meet a Polish woman..they are so attractive! [33]

if you see a girl and you like her, in Poland it is traditional to do the following.....

Take off your left shoe. Fill the shoe with jam and then smile and give the shoe to her as a gift.

She will respect you for this and it is possible she may like you as a boyfriend.

Goodluck.

Travel / Where to go in Poland that has good nighlife but not "touristy"? [10]

Hello All
Advise required please:
Where can i go in Poland for a four / five day stay where.......

It's not overly touristy but there is still some good / reasonable nightlife ie a few clubs / bars / pubs etc. Also where the place is not full of British on the piss. I'm british like a few drinks but don't want to come on holiday only to find that some parts are the same as the UK. ie Pissheads on the streets everynight. I don't mind travelling a distance from airport if required, thanks for any replies.............

Travel / Advice for English guy on travel in poland; is it safe to travel alone? [3]

Hello All:

Help appreciated. I am due to go to Poland in April ( Lodz & Pozan). This for a two week period. The only reason I am going is because I have to use up all my holidays before end of april so i thought it would be a laugh to go to poland and also everywhere else in europe i have been too.

Somone said to me last week that it would be dangerous for me to travel to these two places on my own. The reason being is that there is lots of bad behaving english people who go to these places, who have now ruined it for all eglish and as a consequence we have now a very bad repuation and no longer welcome. Further more, because of this if you are english and alone in a bar or club at night that people / polish will come to you for trouble. As all they see is an english guy on his own who they wish to teach a lesson.

I myself am not like this. Must admit i do like pubs/clubs and definatley do like drink but am also quiet, and can not be bothered with trouble.

Basically is the above true. It is is then i shall change my arragnements go somwhere else, thanks Sam
