History / The Reformation in the Baltic - Denmark, Poland, Sweden [13]

Northern Wars, by Robert Frost. A very good history of state and society in North-Eastern Europe in the 16th-18th centuries.

I know my family history :)

Please clarify this...

acd

Religions in 1st republic. The bigest mistake was that somebody has taken Mazwosze for parlament sessions. It would be much better to choose Poznań, Kraków or Lublin. Places with brighter and richer nobility...

Twice : ) The only nation to ever do so.

Going back to religous freedom:

How ironic that this actually led to Polands downfall in the mid 18th century

It was exactly inversely downfall of religous freedom was the result of what you are talking about.

We had even our "Iraq" Like americans who try to establish democracy there... We tried to make republic from Russia (our troops have been to moscov).

Russians see it in this way:

They prefere Putin, mafia and Oligarhs ... Byzantine

:)

Historicians from Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) claim that march on east (Ukriane, Russia) was mistake ... it was much beter to regain our Siliesia and West pomerania.

More:

konfederacja

The Warsaw Confederation (January 28, 1573), an important development in the history of Poland and Lithuania, is considered the formal beginning of religious freedom in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

This act is remarkable in that it was not imposed by a government or by consequences of war, but rather resulted from the good will of members of Polish-Lithuanian society. It was also influenced by the 1572 French St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, which prompted the Polish-Lithuanian nobility to see that no monarch would ever be able to carry out such an act in Poland.

This country became what Cardinal Stanislaus Hosius called "a place of shelter for heretics". It was a place where the most radical religious sects, trying to escape persecution in other countries of the Christian world, sought refuge. All religious sects in Poland enjoyed tolerance as such was the King's will.

"Certainly, the wording and substance of the declaration of the Confederation of Warsaw of 28th January 1573 were extraordinary with regards to prevailing conditions elsewhere in Europe; and they governed the principles of religious life in the Republic for over two hundred years." - Norman Davies

Part about Poland:

"Students from Wittenberg brought the reforming message early to Danzig and Cracow, but here as elsewhere national sentiments directly affected the course of the reform movement. Partly because of Polish political traditions, partly because of long-standing ties with France, and partly because of a growing antipathy toward Germans, the Poles took much more strongly to Calvinism and Calvinistic sects. It's worth pointing out, too, that the Hussites had flourished in western Poland, so the country had a long tradition of dissatisfaction with the clergy. Moreover, the country also had a long tradition of religious toleration: many Jews had fled thither from persecutions in the West, and there was even an Islamic Tatar population in Lithuania. In the event, a number of different reform churches took root in Poland, especially during the 1540s and 1550s. While ideas and enclaves could be found everywhere, different flavors of Protestantism flourished in different regions of Poland, for exactly the same reason they did in Germany: due to the preferences and protection of the local nobility."

News / Should Polish citizens living abroad have the right to vote in elections [69]

They are quite good. At the peak they have sold shares and bought bonds. Of course Vatican can't risk and spaculate but they have done the best possible move if we consider level of risk they can accept. The problem with them is that they don't have their own market... ;) but it is another story.

OK now THAT is bollocks. Sorry but I don't believe Poland will be richer than Western nations in 25 years...closer to parity? Maybe...but richer? No way in hell

racist ...

We will be but this is not going to be success of people living abroad but Poles who live in Poland.

HAHAHA....I messed up...and am leaving it here for all to see so that nobody can accuse me of hiding anything. I thought you said Poland IS going to be richer.

in 25 years it is going to be richer look our GDP increase, sometimes in our history we were much richer than most of european countries.

U cannot punish people for moving abroad and broadening their horizons. Interview people at home who are supposed to be in the loop, u will likely find that they are clueless or have a distorted view of events.

yes moving from Poland 25 years ago ... and deciding about my taxes :)

News / Should Polish citizens living abroad have the right to vote in elections [69]

Poland in next 20 years is not going to be richer than USA, UK or France however I think every year we are going to be much closer to this states. If somebody claims to be Polish it is very good in our history we had thousands people who were living abroad, being Polish and not always having Polish blood. It is very good but the best Poles live in Poland without looking on their blood Maybe I've picked on Poles from USA because they vote on PiS ;) but I think the same about Poles form UK or France.

Once again it is very good that they feel Polish and wave Polish flags and as long as they do so I consider them Polish.

Everybody can be Polish but not everybody should vote

When you tell them that Poland changes and Poland goes in more or less good direction (what is true) they feel offended that you undermine they Polishness because only one reason they can't come back is Police and Army on Polish streets... ;)

I agree with gtd ... longer than one year abroud and there should be no right to vote. Of course after move back to Poland they should be able to vote etc.

I have some relatives in France they are pure Polish. They wave Polish flags when they watch some sport games. They have interest in Poland, they claim to be Polish and it is very good they do so, they participate in some Polish events in France etc.

When you ask them about come back... they have life there, companies, childern go to schools, some are in mixed marriges. Of course they are all waiting for "this moment" but after 30 years in France ...

In France they are Polish but ...

What kind of Pole is that guy who lives in USA for 20 years votes in American elections, pays taxes there etc. It is not Pole for me. Maybe there in USA he is Pole but not here in Poland.
