Travel / 7 days in Poland... need some advice... [20]

Visiting Warsaw:-

The Royal Castle, Statue of King Zygmunt 111. StJohn's Cathedral, Statue of the Child Insurgent,Historical Museum of Warsaw, statue of The Mermaid of Warsaw, the Barbican.

The Royal Road The Church of St Anne, Holy Cross Church, Monument to Nicolaus Capernicus, President's Palace and monument to Prince Józef Poniatowski, Teatr Wielki National Opera, Saxon Gardens with the lovely fountain. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Monument to the Warsaw Uprising.Krasiński Palace, Wilanów Palace, Potocki Mausoleum in the palace gardens. Powązki cemetry,Wilanów gardens Wilanów Palace, monument to the Victims of Soviet Terror, Pawiak prison, Warsaw ghetto. Palace of Culture and Science. These are just an assortment of places my family visited when in Warsaw. It is a place where a lot of things can be reached by foot. We didn't bother too much with transport but took a taxi to places that could not be reached by foot. You can buy a reasonably priced tourist guide book or just go on to the internet and google places to visit in Warsaw. It is very simple really. Hope this is helpful.

Travel / 7 days in Poland... need some advice... [20]

A particular favourite of mine is Malbork Castle. A trip on the Elblag - Ostrooda canal nature reserve is very nice (forgive any spelling errors please). If you went up to Gdansk there is the Westerplatte monument. Also the small fishing village of Kluki is very interesting. The dunes at £eba are fascinating. Sopot is very nice especially the lovely ice cream cafe near the sea front. Anywhere around the Hel Penninsula is very picturesque. Of course Warsaw itself has a lot of historical places to visit and the Chopin museum. Krakow is a lovely place to visit and a walk along the river is a delight. Hope the weather is kind. Enjoy you visit. Regards Maz.

News / Poland - a foreigner and a native Pole - different point of view...? [24]

Hi Bondi have read your comment and agree maybe lack of education etc is the reason for some of life's homeless people, maybe I just feel lucky to have been able to make a good happy life for myself and my family and other people do not have this opportunity. We do really live in world full of opportunity for some and others not so lucky. I must say that when I was in Krakow we just thoroughly enjoyed it and the people were most welcoming.

News / Poland - a foreigner and a native Pole - different point of view...? [24]

Went to Krakow last October, the weather was fantastic, the food and hotel was too. The people were a delight, particularly in the restaurants. The supermarket check out girl was a little grim faced but she did smile at our attempts to pay with the currency that we were not very familiar with. We went into a charming bookstall and the staff were very helpful. Don't knock Krakow, from a tourist point of view it is charming. Now then what about those beautiful horse drawn carriages and not a bit of manure on the road - has anyone been to Blackpool? Now that is a filthy place to go.They also have horse drawn carriages and lots of manure, it stinks. Has anyone been to Stoke on Trent? On our doorstep near to where I live we have the beautiful Peak District but oh dear 30 minutes the other side of the city is like Beirut! How run down has a city got to go until it is called a slum - well Stoke on Trent is getting there. So you see whether it be London, Manchester, Birmingham, Stoke or Krakow and other Polish cities they all have their own "run down" areas. Could the people that live in these poor parts of the cities be given more resources, assistance and encouragement then they could perhaps strive to improve their own streets?

UK, Ireland / Friend told "just allow your son to forget Polish" by school. [96]

No matter what do not stop speaking to this child in Polish. My Polish friend here in the UK had a child many years ago and she asked our advice to which we told her to speak Polish to him. The rest of the family and friends were English. This child is now an adult with a child of his own and he will speak to the baby in Polish too. Who ever said to "forget the Polish" was not a very forward thinking person. No matter what, the world is changing and a second language can be nothing but an asset. The trouble with some teachers is that they are stuck in their own ways and cannot think too much about the future. Children are cleverer than they are given credit for. Unfortunately my father never spoke to me or my siblings in his native Polish and at the ages of 50+ we are trying hard to learn a little ourselves. We have successfully visited Poland now 3 times and we have been amazed how well the Polish people manage to speak English and although our attempts at Polish have been met with a smile we have always felt that our attempts have been appreciated.

Didn't mean to go on so much but hey children need anything that in today's climate is an advantage to them.

This is not a racist issue it is a failing on the English education system which is failing to understand about languages and how important knowledge of languages is. Infant schools are not catching on at all.

News / Is Poland ready for the swine fever stuff? [59]

Mixed up messages here in the UK. We are told not to go to the doctor's surgery but to phone the NHS Direct number. Well I am confused if we cannot go to the doctor's to find out if we may or may not have swine flu or got to A & E at the hospital how can someone on the end of a telphone tell us if we have swine flu? I never believe a government that says we can deal with a pandemic, the British government will tell us anything but when the time comes.............that is a different matter.

News / EU Hypocrisy Regarding Polish Shipyards [30]

This is not news to me as I have always believed that politicians feather their own nests but the evidence of this is only now coming out as most stuff was hidden from the public. The subject of MP's and their expenses is now going forward to further police inquiries and hopefully there will be prosecutions. The sad thing about this is that these people do not seem to think that they have done anything wrong - it is the rules that are at fault. How can toilet seats, scatter cushions, plugs, dusters, duck houses and the list goes on be a cost incurred to enable an MP to do their job? I understand the rules and do not have the education that these educated idiots have had - what a waste of money to become educated idiots. I say get rid of all these scroungers (who incidentally called the bankers greedy), get them prosecuted and jailed if they have thieved the public purse, and start all over again, lets have the UK back to some sort of credible country that we can be proud of and not be the laughing stock of the EU. MP's have got to be honourable people that work for the people and not for themselves. Bring on the ballot box and soon.

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

Thanks Polanglik you have explained the point that I was trying to make in a much better way. Tony Blair dropped out of government at a most strategic point I think, he timed it so well for himself and just handed Gordon Brown the job. Now then in a normal work situation any job vacancy is usually advertised and people apply for that position. In this case it didn't happen. Tony handed over to Gordon. When the next election comes round it is going to be so difficult for me to vote because I cannot see that any of the parties have clear policies for the people to vote on at the moment. Voting Liberal is a wasted vote, voting Conservative because Labour has made a hash of things would make them think that they had got in by a huge majority (if we all did this of course). In fact voting Conservative would really have been a protest vote against Labour and not because the Conservatives were the best choice. I haven't seen any Politician taking a 20% pay cut like many ordinary workers are doing.

On a lighter note did anyone see the 21 year old girl who won £250,000 on Deal or No Deal last night (UK game show) well I say great hope she manages to find somewhere safe to invest it maybe not a UK Bank.

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

Hello Ireland32 thanks for your reply. You obviously are having it tough and care for your family very much. There is though a great divide between the "factory floor". For example where my husband works they have stopped any overtime payment, they do not have a company pension scheme at all so we have to pay privately - I think you would agree that this is very expensive and we could never put away the amount that would keep us in a high standard of living on retirement. Also no work no pay and that means if you are too ill to work (meaning hospitalized and not just shirking). The management organized a 3 shift system and it is running to the minimum of breaks ie the men have to leave their machines when the buzzer goes, go to wash hands and toilet, eat their meal and be back on the machines, for this they have 20 minutes. There has been a few people having heart attacks and other health issues because of the 3 shift system. Also people have to keep rearranging child care where the wives work. Maybe senior management could come together with the factory floor, hear each other out and maybe a better quality or work arrangements could be met. I firmly believe that the children of today are missing out on quality family life and maybe more attention to our children would do so much more good and less hooliganism and disrespect might be the result.

To Randal I would say that Unions are not all that bad in today's climate. There are other advantages of belonging to a union.Fistly members are insured on their way to work and home again - this must be good. Secondly where my husband works there has been cases of bullying by supervisors (proved cases not made up). Thirdly when there are reduncies the union is a great help to get people into training - again this has been proved to be good as we know someone who has had training in plastering and has done really well, he is now in employment. The union where my husband works haveally good job and they have not called out strikes or huge pay demands they have acted reasonably within structures that management require. Good result

Have just heard of a winner in the redundancy situation. Engineer my husband knows was made redundant after a lot of years in the industry. He got around 13k redundancy and was immediately snapped up by another engineering company (his reputation for good work had gone before him) and the old company have got to pay him his wages for 12 weeks as well. To this man I say Best of Luck you deserve it.

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

The ordinary working mans redundancy package is certainly no where as big as what some Senior Managers get. You have not answered my question though, why do the people on the factory floor get treated as though they are scum? Please don't tell me that they don't because I have personal experiences. When you have your large executive houses and are made redundant yes it is difficult but you can at least downsize. The family in a smaller less well off situation can only downsize to maybe a caravan, council or housing association property, and have probably had to go into bankruptcy. Also my husband has had a 20% pay cut and is expected to work overtime with no overtime premium. There is a huge problem in the business sector and that is Management seem to think that they are superior beings and the people getting their hands dirty are worth less. Maybe Ireland32 you may not be one of these superior beings as I do not know you and can only speak as I have found through experience.

Seems like Mr Brown (who is he you might ask) our unelected Prime Minister and Mr Obama have got a plan to save the world. Pity he didn't know about the plan months ago then the UK in particular could be in a better financial state instead of the mess we have got now.How can it be that a democratic country like the UK has an unelected Prime Minister?

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

Apparently work contracts don't really count for anything, companies just go to court with their plans and state that any change is good for the company (including pay cuts) and the plan will be approved. Such is life, stuff the workers, give plenty of benefits to the shirkers and the bankers say great.......more money for me.

Contracts what is the point!!!!

The truth about greedy bankers is now coming out. Greedy men at the top have secured themselves fantastic amounts of money for their own pensions and the workforce will get next to nothing. I just wonder why the great workforce who toil in factories etc are really presumed to be worthless even though it is they that produce the goods for companies and make the profits very lucrative. Do executives think they are clever taking all these bonuses? Eventually the money will run out - these executives should get down onto the factory floor and learn about manufacturing and they may have a greater respect for the hard working labour force because at the moment ordinary men and women are treated like scum. What will be left for the younger generation? Hm, let me think, shops, shops and more shops because that is what England is becoming, but many will only be able to look through the windows at what they can't have. Seems like the return of the post war years to me, my grandmother told me a lot about those times.

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

Hi Seanus have checked out the links and have to agree Poland is beautiful and a great country full of very nice people. Yes I would like to live there but have to say that home is where the heart is and that is the UK but my second choice would be Poland the land of my father.

I think somehow the UK has got lost and we certainly need some very forward thinking politicians who are not just working to line their own pockets, but to bring the very best ideas and to work with the people and for the people. The greatest asset any country has is its people and governments should be judged on how they treat its people. At the moment that is not very well at all. We can no longer just sit back and let the wealthy do just as they please. That wealth needs to be put back into circulation and get the UK moving again. Maybe we need some of that confidence that the Poles have who knows? I for one hope that sometime soon things settle down and in the mean time we just work hard, get paid less money, try to keep a hold on our homes and maybe things will work out ok.

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

Seems like the gloom is on it's way. There are thousands over here losing their homes as well as their jobs. I think that there has been too much money given to footballers, celebrities and high flying money managers and they have taken so much that there is not much left for the ordinary man in the street. Surely a few bad debts in the housing market of the USA could not have caused such a downturn in the global economy. I think governments think we are stupid. What do we vote for in the next election in the UK more of the same or a conservative party that have no ideas what to do? Maybe if everyone refused to vote they may think "dooh what have we done"? Then maybe not do politicians actually think?

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

Job losses here in the UK are growing and there are already various sympathetic strikers. It is likely to get worse as many more companies are choosing to employ workers from Spain, Portugal, Italy etc. Many Polish workers may be thinking of leaving the UK as our cost of living is high whilst European workers are paid less and foreign owned companies in the UK are discriminating against the British worker. British workers do have for some reason a reputation of being lazy but for the people that I know in particular the engineering industries are very hard workers.

Is Poland's economy going to follow the same pattern?

Latest news from Staffordshire in the UK. Local engineering company in Stoke on Trent have cut everyones wages by 20% and overtime will not be paid, just time off in lieu of wages.

Be warned out there it could be coming your way!

News / EU Hypocrisy Regarding Polish Shipyards [30]

UK government giving our money to invest in the banks, does that mean that the men at the top will take huge bonuses again? People are beginning to distrust the banks but why should taxpayers money keep being given when the banks are not distributing in a way that the government require them to? Companies have orders but they are closing down because the banks are not helping to secure lending to potential buyers.

How is the Polish economy going?

Think our Politicians have really shown themselves for what they are, greedy money grabbing people. They do not seem to understand their own rules on claiming back expenses so how on earth can they successfully manage the country? The expenses game is nothing but theft from the English taxpayer and they should be ashamed of themselves. One thing though how many other countries and E U Ministers are up to the same thing. It makes a mockery of the next election because who can we trust?

Travel / New Year's in Krakow [22]

Hi to everyone out there who will be celebrating the New Year in some way. Hope you have a great time, for me it will be a quiet time by the tv I think, we had some unpleasant characters about and a poor old soul up our road had his home broken into and he was assaulted all this for some greedy ba....ds to get their drug money. Anyway enough doom and gloom.

Have a great evening of celebrations and hope the hang overs are not too bad.

All the best for a fantastic 2009 from here in the UK to everyone over their in Poland and of course our UK writers too.

Has anyone got any photo's of the celebrations in Krakow, would love to see some.

News / EU Hypocrisy Regarding Polish Shipyards [30]

Hello again to all those people who doubted that I was not telling the truth about the state of our local hospital here in Staffordshire. The headline on page 3 of our local Sentinel Newspaper - Hospital chief quits as A & E delays hit hard. A lady by the name of Val Doyle departed as chief operating officer at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire after 11 months in the job. Her resignation comes after queues grew even longer in the accident unit and brought increasingly biting criticism from the public. These highly paid people seem to have no idea how to solve the problems at this hospital. We are in another dilema too - we have a brand new hospital in the process of construction and guess what? It has 250 beds less than the existing hospital. The patient figures do not add up how can the new hospital cope with less beds? Is anybody sorting this out yet or will it be left until a bigger problem happens in a couple or so years time? Can it be sorted - I wonder?

How is the hospital system in Poland compared to the UK one? Would love to hear from anyone with experience of your system.

News / NUDE BRITISH MEN RUNNING AROUND IN WROCLAW [82]

Hi daystrom glad you like some of us Brits. We do try to be liked but some stupid idiots such as those in Warsaw let us down badly. When me and my family were in Spain we were very badly looked upon by the Spanish. Our child members who were aged 4 and 18 months old went onto a trampoline together, the Spanish children who were with their parents went on to the trampoline so our two had to come off. When ours came off so did the Spanish kids so ours got on again and hey presto so did the Spanish ones. You may think that they wanted to play with our two but they were too rough for the baby one, and at the end the Spanish children actually stood spitting at our two.Their parents just sat laughing and clapping what their children were doing. I don't think that two innocent children should have been treated like this, but hey again I think it could be a Brits abroad thing. However the Spanish don't mind having our money. I can honestly say that I have been to Poland a few times and have never come across such anti Brit feeling. I still feel though that if people are already drunk they should not be served. In the UK it is illegal to serve a drunk but of course who is going to police this? If stupid people want to damage their livers and kidneys well let them get on with it, if the drink doesn't kill them off maybe hypothermia will. It is very cold over here in Staffordshire, we have actually had a heavy snowfall yesterday and it is now freezing. How many will be stripping off this week I wonder. Brass Monkey weather I think.

On behalf of the Brits who do behave themselves (please do not class us all the same) all we can do is apologise for these stupid idiots. It would be better if the Polish Police just herded them all up, locked them in a cell and put them on a plane back to the UK. Finally they should never be allowed to travel to your country ever again. We are fed up of having such a bad reputation in other countries so the people who serve these stupid people should also be reprimanded. No business should be allowed to serve drunkards in the first place so some responsibility should be taken by the establishments that are taking their money and providing the alcohol. As I say please send them home!

News / EU Hypocrisy Regarding Polish Shipyards [30]

Hello again welshguyinpola could you explain to me how the NHS is free? We pay National Insurance contributions and taxes that go into the system. You ask where would the money come from for a better system. Well what about a portion of the lottery money. If just 1 weeks profits went towards the NHS I don't think too many people would complain after all most of us will need the NHS at some point in our lives. Do you know how many people have had operations done privately and when an emergency has arisen they have had to be transferred to a NHS hospital because the private one does not have an emergency service. It is fine if all goes well, but well if things go wrong you take your chance that you do not die in the ambulance on the way to a NHS hospital. Please don't tell me this is not true because it does happen. When we get our wages after having worked hard and payed all our dues why should we not have some of life's luxuries as you put it, what do we go to work for if not for some happiness? We do not get prescriptions free like you do in Wales but I would rather pay for prescriptions and get a good hospital service. By the way did you know that our hospital here in North Staffordshire have closed down the kitchens and the food is purchased and delivered from a company in Wales? What happens when the snow falls in Wales? Do our patients go hungry? The food is so bad that patients are having relatives bring in food for them. Please don't tell me this is not too either. Try checking out our local newspaper The Sentinel. I am tired of being accused of lying by some people on this forum. Everything I am putting out is TRUE.

Thanks for your support RenaNorton I am doing my best on this forum to let people know what it is like over here for the ordinary working man but not getting very far because people think I am lying.

Just a quick message to Topicalpost. I happened to be at our local hospital on Friday 21st November and there was great excitement in the accident and emergency department. What was the cause of this excitement - a consignment of pillows had been delivered. The staff were so delighted they could replaced the blankets at people's heads with a pillow. Now tell me again that I have been lying if you dare. I was there myself and saw it with my own eyes.

Life / Polish Christmas Traditions [19]

Hi welshguyinpola - Oh yes I know of course about real trees in the UK I think you misunderstand me. When we were young my dad insisted that we always had a real Christmas Tree and it was lovely, however we seem to have more and more of the artificial kind with lights already attached and some already decorated. I have this year seen a 6 foot black Christmas Tree and it was horrendous. For a lot of families a real tree from a Garden Centre is very expensive and also because of all the central heating the trees are often bare as the needles drop off very quickly and do not last for the whole of the Christmas Season. This brings me on the pine pot pourri this is what I buy to get the smell of the pine into my rooms. I am not trying to suggest that everything that Poland does is the best but I am trying desperately to get to know the country that half of me belongs to. From the visits that I have already made somehow the welcome that I have experienced has filled me with pride. Not many countries are welcoming to the Brits but I cannot say that about Poland - so of course I love the country. Oh and also I have had many holidays in Wales in the area of Prestatyn and that too has always been lovely. So please accept I am not biased on the side of Poland I am in the middle of a learning process. Anyway hope your Christmas is a good one too.

News / EU Hypocrisy Regarding Polish Shipyards [30]

Hi Topicalpost everything that I have put on my post is very true and not something that I have made up, I do not even need to read a daily paper as I have eyes and experience. If we are one of the richest countries in the world why are our elderly people having to choose whether to eat or heat their homes? This is a true statement. After having worked all their lives the state pensions are a pittance. People are loosing their jobs at JCB, Wedgwood, local engineering business's, shops (oh yes this country is good at building more and more shops). As for me you are right I did not go hungry because my Polish father worked hard all his life and when he needed medical treatment he was let down by the NHS industry that you speak of. He died on a filthy hospital ward. It was that bad that the hospital actually apologised to us. I do not need to look inside myself at all I live my live my life doing the best I can for my family, I have looked after a grandmother until she died at the age of 91 years, my mother is an invalid now after having had a hard life bringing up us - her family. People are losing their homes because they are buying a home on a mortgage and cannot afford the repayments. If other people who live in rented accommodation cannot pay the rent they get it paid by the state - think this is crap. The UK must be seen by some as a very rich country I agree but it is our money that the government have used to bail out the banks - why should this be? I have worked hard all my life and at this time this country is definately not the country that it was. If you would care to check out the papers over here you would read what is happening. I am not telling lies there is no point in that.

A further message to Topicalpost.I have today had a copy of our local newspaper and you will find this on thisisstaffordshire.co.uk and this is the site of our newspaper The Sentinel. The headline I draw you attention to "The tumour's grown...and I'm running out of time" She requires Sutent treatment for kidney cancer. She has been told that she will have to wait until January to find out if she can have this drug. Mrs Hopkins is 70 years old and has sent the following letter to the care trust about her delay for this drug.

How can a system like this be fair and just? Please consider the people of this country.I have always felt that if I can understand something, and it is morally fair, then I can accept it. But I have not spoken to one person who can accept what is going on with this postcode lottery and I cannot believe the way that I, and others like me, have been treated. It is inexcusable, that people can be treated like this in 2008. If it is happening now, then what have our young people got to come in future years? I think, as do many others I have spoken to to, that things need to change. Our people need to be looked after in a fair, decent and moral way - a way that can be judged as fair to all and not just some.

What she means by postcode lottery is that it depends on which part of the country you live because different areas only supply and fund certain cancer type drugs.

Now then I will also tell you the following conversation when my father was in hospital.

Dad - Oh dear I need a bed pan quickly

Me- right I will find a nurse

Nurse - I am busy (doing what I don't know)

Me = I think you had better sort my dad out

Nurse says to Dad - I am busy just do it in your bed and we will clean you up later

Please don't tell me that I am making this up IT HAPPENED. I have witnesses, this is just one factor of the reason that the hospital apologised to us.I was also going in to the hospital at meal times to feed my father because if I or another family member didn't go he would not have had anything to eat. At one time he wanted a drink and he had to have it through a straw (this had gone missing) I asked a nurse and she said to me Oh look its under the bed, then she left. I had to go to the kitchen to get my dad a clean straw. Needless to say he also caught MRSA

Yes things have started to improve but believe me there is no lie in any of my information - it is so true I would take a lie detector test. Finally could I say that for you to go La di dah or what ever it is appears to me to be very rude. The NHS is not as you say an industry it is a service, there is a big difference in these two words. Everyone in the UK pays National Insurance payments from their wages and we pay all sorts of other taxes for this service. This is just some of the reasons that I feel that this country has gone down bank. The impression of us being one of the richest countries in the world is again down to money and not about the people of our country especially the young and the old. EAT OR HEAT IS A VERY TRUE STATEMENT Lets hope that this does not go to Poland.

Sorry about this guys I know you will probably fed up of my posts now but just to say

Rolls Royce
GKN
BAE Systems
Astra Zeneka

Yes even more redundancies. Watch Out It is happening and could be in your country soon.

No I am not lying either

Life / Polish Christmas Traditions [19]

I think the extra plate business sounds lovely. I had heard about that but thought maybe it did not happen any more. Old traditions are lovely. Think I will have to catch a Ryan Air to Gdynia and surprise my family there, I know there would be a warm welcome. Proper Christmas trees are beautiful and the smell of the pine is lovely. The artificial stuff we have is not the same. I usually get some pine pot pouri to at least get a Christmassy smell in the room. Oh I am really getting in the spirit of the coming season.

News / British food exports to Poland up 53% [43]

In the UK we have imported some very nice Polish foods I just love the gherkins and Polish salami type sausage. Polish shops have taken off very well also so it is a fair exchange I think. When you try Marmite toast your bread and put on some proper butter (not margerine) and then just dab the Marmite over the toast. Do not put it on thickly like using jam. You can also make a hot drink of it, put a teaspoon or so in a cup and pour on boiling water stirring as your pour the water. Wait for it to dissolve and then drink slowly, you could also make some toast cut it into strips and dip it in the Marmite drink. Another use is to make a stew/casserole and put some Marmite in to enhance the flavour. It is just a matter of taste, you either love it or hate it.
