Life / Cost of living in Gdansk [16]

Hi,
I am about to qualify as a teacher of English as a foreign language (CELTA for those in the know). I am also an experienced computer programmer (10 years)

So, moving to Gdansk in late September and trying to work out if I can earn enough from teaching to live in Gdansk. I also have to pay for my car back in England which is on credit. Unfortunately, getting rid of the car is not possible or I will still be paying off the credit and simply have no car!

I understand my cost of living may be something like this each month

Flat 1300
Bills 300
Car 1000
Food 1000 (for 2 people)

Does this sound about right for the area? Is there anything I missed? Could bills be more?
of course, this means I need to earn at least 4000zl net to just survive to a basic level. Anybody know the TEFL industry know if this is even possible for a newly qualified teacher?

Many thanks in advance and maybe I'll be on this forum a lot over the coming years.

Life / Cost of living in Gdansk [16]

HI,

I am experienced in vb.net (3 years), SQL Server (10 Years) Cold Fusion (7 years before the .net). I specialise in winforms and I'm pretty good with customer user controls and ADO.NET 2. I'm a big fan of object orientation to make the job easier, but not for the sake of it.

I do have the car here and will keep it. Though, I understand it's worth more in Poland than the outstanding credit, so it's tempting to sell it and get something cheaper. THe car is fully insured for 12 months in the whole of Europe.

I will be paying taxes here in Poland though I'm told that it's often cheaper to set up as self employed to reduce the tax burden especially if I decide to ditch teaching and do contract work for British companies remotely.

As for strinign words together, I've been learning Polish sporadically for about a year and am takinga 100 hour intense course before moving to Gdansk. So I fully expect to be at a pre-intermediate level by then. I will be continuing my studies in Polish with am aim to become fluent as quickly as possible.

What about bills, does 300zl/month sound realistic in the winter months?

Thanks for all the answers.

Life / Cost of living in Gdansk [16]

it says i have to post 3 forum messages before i can PM... but maybe this on will do it.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm seeing a clearer picture. Maybe dumping the car is a good idea if I can make enough to pay off the loan which is secured against it, otherwise selling the car is illegal under English law which of course is the governing law of the specific contract. I would need a car to see other friends in Poland and for if I move flats because my partner and I have so much stuff... but maybe I can find a 'man with a van' who needs a few extra zloty to do that?

Anyway, I'll be up that way soon, maybe see some of you out and about? :)

Life / Cost of living in Gdansk [16]

I'm from England and before I came I sold or gave away everything I owed so everything I own fits into the back of a small a Toyota Avensis. My partner has even less stuff so I'm sure we'll be fine. She grew up in a Polish flat so she's kinda used to it.

What is bad though, is I appear to have a seed from the top of the bread i was just eating lodged under my laptop keyboard making me have to press letters a littler harder and blowing into the keyboard to move it around. :)

Food / Out of date kielbasa! [5]

I just bought some kielbasa at my local shop... to get home and notice it is dated best before 21st July!!

But, my Polish is so week that I don't stand a chance of trying to get it exchanged at the shop. I could work out how to say "I bought this yesterday"... but then what?

I have an intense Polish course soon, maybe that will help me not break out into a sweat every time I have to try and talk Polish to a stranger.. seriously, that's how bad it is... I can chat with a friend in basic Polish but lock up with strangers.

So, is it safe to eat 2 weeks out of date or just throw it away?

Food / Out of date kielbasa! [5]

no receipt, it's just a tiny local shop. I have Polish friends but I doubt they will cross from the other side of Krakow just for a kielbasa... besides, we're all one a very intense training course and nobody will have time.

Will be easier to learn from the mistake and carry on the study that I'm doing :(

Food / Out of date kielbasa! [5]

I'll have to look up the word for receipt... again, I'm so busy on my CELTA course that it's less hassle to just forget about this one and move on... it's not a big deal, but it was 13zl that I couldn't afford to lose.

thanks again :)

Work / Moving to Krakow to teach English, need more tips on life in Krakow [27]

I'm in Krakow right now learning to teach English :) I understand that Poland is short of 8000 English teachers so there should be plenty of work. However, this still hasn't put the slary rates up :(

I'll be moving up to Gdansk where I'm told it's worse... but the private teaching should help make ends meet.

Work / Voluntary charity work (Englsih teaching) - Gdansk [5]

Hi,

As some of you know, I'm moving to Gdansk soon. You may also recall that I qualify as a teacher of English in 2 days time. What you didn't know is that I have an awful habit of giving my time away. Whilst I will no doubt want to suplement my income with private teaching, I am also keen to give up a little bit of my time to help those who could benefit from some help with English. of course, only once I've actualy got a job and settled, so it coule be a couple of months.

Does anybody know of any charities, scout groups, etc in the area or other such non-profit organisations such as local schools who might be interested in such assistance? Note that I will only do this for non-profit organisations.

many thanks

Tony

Of course... it would help if I could actually spell... English!! oops !

Work / Voluntary charity work (Englsih teaching) - Gdansk [5]

Hi and thanks for the comments.

I will be keeping my car in Gdansk so going out to the countryside would be a pleasure. Also, I 'should' be A2 level in Polish before my arrival, if I work hard enough on the courses I have for the next 3 weeks. If I mess up, my partner will no doubt translate a bit for me :)

Your advice is very good and I shall try your suggestions. I also need to make sure that my free lessons are via some charitable organisation rather than just 'free lessons' to avoid upsetting paying customers.

The idea bout visiting a few times first is a great idea!

thanks again

oh... and the women.. they might be very beautiful, but if you inhale when they expect you to exhale... or even just blink too frequently then you're in big trouble!

or maybe that's just the ones I've been involved with?

Travel / Hotel recommendation in Krakow [23]

Merged: Gdansk, Osowa, Hotel Recommandation

HI All,

If you've followed my other posts, you'll know I'm a new English teacher in Gdansk. Whilst I've been here a week for interviews and flat hunting I have been staying in a hotel with a good restaurant. The owners here have been so good to me with all aspects of my stay and also with general advice, I feel it is only proper for me to tell everybody else how pleased I am and make this recommendation.

The hotel is the Osowianka, in Osowa, Gdansk. A great family run hotel and restuarant.

osowianka.spanie.pl

Great prices, comfortable rooms and seriously good food.

News / Poles Ranks First in Computer Coding [47]

Seriously, this seems quite possible. I've come to Poland with some 10 years programming experience and find it difficult to compete with Polish programmers. Not only do they hold good quality degrees but they also keep themselves really up to date with the latest technologies.. or so it seems when they try to tell me I'm out of date and therefore want me cheap...

If what they say is true, then yes they are good, but I've yet to see the "proof in the pudding", so to speak.

But, I've not seen any evidence either way yet, so I'll wait and see before coming to any conclusion. If gadu-gadu is anything to go by... then that's proof -against- this claim... seriously, a Polish chat client that doesn't even let me type Polish characters! (using the windows language bar set to PL which works fine in all other applications) - not to mention the crashing...

News / British war memorial in/near Trojmiasto? [19]

Hi all,

That time of year is approaching where those of use who still care, choose to remember our fallen in gratidude for their suffering and sacrifice in the many wars that have scared our history. Now I'm in a foreing country, that saw more than its fair share of action and attrocities, I continue to choose to consider that this rememberence is not only about those fallen from myown nation, but also about all those fallen in wars, old and new, and as such am seeking a place to pay my respects this November. I'm not a religious man so will not choose to remember them in any church ceremony, but may choose a simple silent moment in the vicinity of a memorial and maybe lay some poppies if I can find any to buy.

So, to the point, does anybody know of any of an British war memorials I the Trojmiasto area, or, failing that, any international or Polish memorials? Maybe even a simple British war cemetary?

A few people think I'm a bit strange for this, but this is me, this is how I feel, so if you don't like it, please just click 'back', the flaming is simply not going to change my opinions.

Lest we forget.

Thanks for the advice :)

In the meantime I kept up my search on google and found the aforementioned CWGC:

cwgc.org/search/cemetery_details.aspx?cemetery=2016901&mode=1

Looks like the ideal place and I'd be surprised if I'm not the only person there on 11th but possibly a little disappointed if I find I am. But maybe some will wait until the Sunday.

HI yes,
I've found malbork, I do some work in Tczew, not too far away, but the directions on the website bear no resemblence to the roads on google maps so I'll have to ask a few locals to find how to get to is.

Thanks again

Thanks for that, I'll go and take a look one weekend.

I'll need to take a look for this cemetery before the day so could see the castle then.

Excellent, thank you. I had little doubt that the programmers were good, I just reserve making any judgement without evidence. It's just a shame they are paid such poor salaries where in England we have a shortage of programmers and salaries are much better.

Piorun,
Thank you very much for the information, such a place would be an ideal location. As for whether is it more or less appropriate than a memorial for all of the fallen I'm unsure, but it would certainly be a great honout to go and pay respects to these men directly.

I will do some investigation and see what I can find.
(update: I just found Ogonki, it's 4 hours from me unfortunately)

Now, another important question. Any idea where I can maybe purchase a wreath of poppies in Poland in November?

many thanks

Fantastic, I'll take a look! I've also contacted the Royal British Legion to see what they know.

So any more Brits care to join me on this visit?

Life / Satellite type connections in flat in Poland [18]

Hi,
I have a question regarding the various connections available in my flat. There is the usual TV/Radio connection ont he wall and then next to that another box with downward facing satellite type connections.

I tried connecting my Polsat digital receiver and got a bit of a spark! So, I instructed the decoder to NOT send power to the LNB and tried again, no signal on any satellites that I can see (or maybe I didn't wait long enough to find out). There is a large satellite dish on the roof but I'm not sure if this is what is piped into these connections.

Anybody have any (sensible) suggestions as to what these connections may be? Is there anything else that is sent down cables that are identical to satellite connectors?

many thanks

Thread attached on merging:
Polish satellite / cable TV connections

Hello again
I did ask about this briefly before but I'll try again with a little more detail.

In my flat there are two types of connections for the TV. One is very big and old, kinda like the UK UHF TV connection but a lot bigger! From this I am receiving a poor quality terrestial TV signal.

Next to this is another box with its outlets pointing downwards. These outlets are idential to the UK satellite TV female connection. The type that required you to screw on a male connector. Pun not intended.

I have tried connecting a polsat decoder to these conenctions, with and without LNB power and there is no signal from any of the recognised satellites. Is this maybe some sort of cabel TV connection? Do I need a decoder? A friend at work says I just connect this directly to my TV but I'm not convinced, surely it's the wrong type of connection and impedence? ohh, when i tried a few months ago, accidentally with the LNB power option on, I got a little spark.... oops. Maybe it -was- satellite...

I can post pictures on here of the connections if needs be.

thanks in advance for any advice

Hi Harry,
Thanks for the info. I've emailed the consulate and had no repsonse whatsoever. Maybe the honoury bit means they don't do anything? :)

The embassy is a little too far away but thankfully I've got friends in England who have agreed to send over some poppies to me. But, getting a wreath might be a little tricky. No response from the legion yet either :(

Anyway, we'll see what happens. Thanks for all the help

News / Polish driver follows GPS directions into lake ! [30]

I don't understand the significance of the driver being Polish, or any other nationality for that matter. I've almost had some tricky situations here in Poland because of my GPS, thankfully, I do look at the signs and exercise some common sense when it tells me to turn up somebody's driveway or into a field!

Though, this wasn't the case when it told me to turn off a main road when driving from Krakow to Gorzow and I ended up driving around a disused WW2 airfield! I just wish I'd marked where it was to go back another time for a decent look. I suspect Poland is full of these historical gems that are just begging to be photographed and documented.

News / Polish driver follows GPS directions into lake ! [30]

The story is amusing not because the driver was Polish,

I understand, but the press in the UK always seem to like adding the nationality of the people as if it's significant. I guess it's a media thing with their "3 ways to describe something" training.

Still yeah, it is a bit funny and I've almost come-a-cropper a few times myself with my GPS. Everytime I drive through Tczew it confidently instructs me 'turn right' when I am driving over a bridge; the road it wants me to turn on is some 20 meters below me! Thankfully, when I turn on my GPS, I don't turn off my eyes and common sense.

Real Estate / Accommodation - Legal advice request [15]

Hi All,

As one or two of you may know, I have my unappreciative and disrespectful ex staying with my whilst she "looks for her own place". I kindly offered her accommodation for 2 months whilst she was supposed to find a job and a room. This has not happened and she continues to be a bit of a 'princess' living of me and being as nasty as she can.

So, the final straw, I told her she has to move out before the end of the month. This was greeted with laughter and the word 'maybe'.

As she points out, she is listed on the contract as living here, but is not a signatury to this contract so I can't just move and leave her with the rent. In England, this would mean that she was a lodger and I can force her to leave, with police assistance if neccessary, without notice. Can anybody advise me what the law is in Poland? How can I get this parasite out of my hair? I am at the stage where I will be happy to use police assistance, even if that results in arrest.

Her name appears on the contract where it says: "najemca ma prawo używać lokalu wyłącznie na cele mieszkaniowe dla " in addition to the contract holder (myself).

any advice will be greatly appreciated

thanks

she said whilst trying to land at her base some looney drove across the runway..! they sent armed patrols after the driver , but he got away....

not guilty! :) This one was certainly disused, unless the Polish airfields are as in the same poor conidtion as their roads. But there was no air traffic or sign of life in general.

Life / I need general health care - can I pay ZUS monthly for this? [8]

Hello again,
The job I have right now is on one of these awful "Contact for a specific task", which is nice because it gives me a known income each month but bad because I don't get paid holiday or health cover, but I do of course pay tax, that's done by the school for me.

So, I'm here with only the basic emergency health care provided by the NHS through the EU agreements. That OK if the only illness I get is an emergency, but what about day to day health issues that may arise? How can I get health care? Can I pay ZUS or something each month to obtain this right?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated and I'm just a little annoyed that my school wasn't better prepared for native speakers to help me with all this in the first place. I will have to prepare some document for whoever replaces me when I decide to move on.

many thanks

Life / Calling Emergency Services in Poland [6]

Hi,

I have a question regarding the legal use of emergency services in Poland. Two weeks ago I spotted a fire in one of those large metal recycling containers accross from my flat. I wasn't overly concerned because the fire was contained within this metal casing, however, there was a car parked about 40cm away, the heat was obviously building and then children started playing with the fire which provoked its strength somewhat. So, at this stage in the UK I would have called the fire brigade without hesitation.

However, my Polish friend told me that if you call the emergency services and they consider your call not worthy, then you may be in trouble. Is this true? If so, how am I qualified to tell if a situation is worthy of attention? Wait until there is a direct threat to life or until somebody has been injured?

In addition, I have been experiencing chest pains, sometimes painfull enough for me to have to stop what I'm doing and clutch the left side of my chest (not the centre which would make me really worry). I have a feeling it's just muscular as it was a year ago or indeed stress related, However, it was severe enough so that again, if I was in the UK, I would have sought immediate medical assistance, possibly even an ambulance. However, once again, my friend tells me (in this case my ex), that if it was found to be muscular and therefore not life threatening that I'd have to pay for the ambulance and treatment and maybe ven get into trouble.

So, can somebody give me an 'official' version. Can I call in a report of a fire that is non life threatening and can I seek medical assistance if I think it is urgent? Obviously, I'm not qualified to say if a medical problems is urgent or not, so I'd err on the side of caution.

Incidentally, come pay day (any day now), I'm going to talk to one of my students who is a GP and get this chest checked out, just in case.

regards

Tony
