USA, Canada / letter of invitation to the US? [8]

Hmmm don't really think that the letter will do a whole lot... used to work at the consulate in FF/Main, and I have friends in the Visa section. For a tourist visa, Show strong ties to Poland - job, going to school, studying, etc., your mom & dad, child, etc., and owning property. Show that you have a good life in Poland to go back to at the end of your vacation/visit! True that you do need luck. These visa folks can be moody and it all depends on the who you get to do the interview. I think Krysia's right about going at the beginning of the year.

I have a friend who got his visa in Krakow & when his gf tried to get one a month later, so they could visit the US together & travel around, she was denied. We think it was because she didn't show strong enough ties & the interviewer thought maybe she was looking for a hubby to marry in the US. Go figure.

He who lives in a glass house shouldn't throw stones. I'll keep mine if you keep yours.

why are you being nasty? my remark was meant to be funny, not nasty.

I'm not throwing any stones here, so I have no clue what you are talking about.

Oh, sure... you want our snow but not our terrorists... Picky aren't we?
Seriously, I agree that this is a great cause for concern. And I am not at all reassured by the turn of some events recently.

Yes P L E A S E send me so snow! Its been unseasonably warm where I live.

and uh.... yes please, keep all the terrorists you like! :)

Dude you are endeared to the Poles for all the wrong reasons. The Germans, Russians, Spanish, and French have all been oppressed at one point or another. Are you endeared to all of them as well?

Guest 3 I'm thinking that Jose is "endeared" because the Slavic women are so beautiful!! :) I am thinking that is what is on his mind here... not culture, Just Women!!

Yes I know ALLLLLLLL about the immigration issues. I have friends, a Polish couple, the guy has a visa to visit the US, the woman cannot get one. They recently married, and the woman STILL cannot get one to visit. Go figure. But Arab terror cells are springing up all over the country... hmmmm looks like they are letting the wrong people in here, eh?

Hahaha, that's what life is about embracing the different.

Hmmmm.... not sure the lovely Polish girls I know are ready for you yet, Jose! I don't think my friends would be "embracing" you & your attitudes, for sure! And my friends are charming, intelligent, beautiful ladies -- one speaks 5 languages. FYI, when traveling & staying in Poland as with all the other European countries I traveled in, the "New Yorkness" needs to stay in New York. Blending in is what its about... leave your strong opinions about life & politics at home... Oh, and learn a few courtesy words of Polish.

* Before making bad comments about the arabs...be-aware that Jesus was Arab

Hello there, please get your Christian-based facts straight... READ THE BIBLE. Jesus was a Jew.

Who are you talking about Hating the Polish Heart? I see a lot of hate coming from your very own post. Hmmmm... are you wishing to open Poland to ALL THE WORLD, perhaps? With your so-called "love of diversity" You don't know what you're asking for and obviously have not read much on world events, especially border issues & immigration contol.

Aw, ****, I didn't know you all are so serious and do not have a sense of humour.
Typical for conservatives...

Hey.... I'm a conversative and I laughed when I read that!! Don't lump us all together, now...

Hmmm... I know several Poles who are successful here in the US & not working at "menial jobs". One I know owns his own printing shop, another owns her own "spa". They make ALOT of money... doesn't sound too menial to me.

Ambitions are an individual thing. How you are raised, what your parents teach you and what YOU feel in your heart YOU wish to do. Only YOU as a person can know your ambitions. And do whatever it takes to make it happen for you. Those are what the obstacles are.

Guest 3, I agree with your post...thank you.

Love / Polish interracial dating [333]

Ooooo Matek must say, thank you for your frank post... the lady who cuts my hair here in the US is one of those poor white women, with 4 kids.... the black guy's family never approved of her, and hence, they are not married & now he has a new girlfriend... a black one that his family loves. Hmmmm..... food for thought, huh??

Thank you Matek for your wonderful conservative & realistic post.

Hmmm.... so those white American who don't believe in interracial marriage are rednecks, huh??

That's pretty funny. What do you call the black Americans who don't believe in interracial marriage? There are plenty of black American who don't believe in interracial marriage too!!!

And guess what... interracial marriages break up too.

People with black skin are not common in Poland and I think someone who looks different from you is always interesting and appealing.

Travel / Why is Poland so Un-Sexy? [84]

What an interesting thread....
Personally I find Poland quite "sexy" much "sexier" than Prague & other places in Czech, which was become super commercialized thanks to the EU. LOTS of hookers in Czech & Slovakia by the borders... I don't know what Aaarrrggh is talking about.

The few Polish men I have come across in my travels have been very POLITE and quite handsome. And Hey, there are those of us that dig the religious thing. I like going to Poland and that is one of the things that make me feel good there.

If I was 10 yrs younger & had no responsibilities, you would find me teaching English somewhere in Poland & spending time with a handsome, smart, polite, religious & SEXY Polish guy.

One of the many reasons I find Poland "sexy" is because it is still somewhat unspoiled.

Aaarrrrggh, try & change your attitude. Maybe if you tried to be a little more accepting you might make a few friends & go to some Balangi & meet some women!!

Travel / What to eat in Poland when you are a pain [8]

At least you are willing to try... once I traveled with a friend from the US who brought her own bottled water with her... 1/2 a suitcase full... Never again!

Some of the restaurants will have a little description of the food in English. I found this quite often in Wroclaw & Krakow. Also suggest one of those Polish prase books. Lots of great menu info in there.

Hmmm... when I ordered salad it was Salatky. ???

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

What a great thread... I'm smiling now!:)

You know the shopping every day for groceries, bread, meat, veggies, etc. I believe this is all of Europe. Everywhere I have been it is like that. The refrigerators are small and apartments are small - no where to store your things especially in the city. I know, cause I lived in the city!

I noticed a smell in the air too... but I thought this was from the wood or coal used for fires in the winter.

I love hearing the roosters in the morning...

Pizza with corn, cucumbers and tzaziki sauce. That was a new one for me.

Oh yes and the locking thing... but I'm used to that. We lock everything ALL THE TIME here. Metro DC area. I would never leave my car unlocked or my home.

You cannot sit on concrete or any cold surface... this will chill your bones & you will get sick!

I'm sure I will think of a few more....

Travel / Ideas for some day trips in Zielona Gora [4]

Actually I will be in Europe the first 2 weeks of May. I just made my reservations last night!!! :) :) :) Wondering, what do ya'll think of Karpacz for a day trip? Isn't this a mountain ski area? and I've heard there are some nice churches in Jelenia Gora (actually I have lots of church pics from my other visits in Poland!)

Travel / Ideas for some day trips in Zielona Gora [4]

Hello hoping to get some ideas for some day trips... I will be in Poland in Spring, Wroclaw & a few small towns, Boleslawiec & Tomasov. What town would be nearby to these towns that I could drive to in a day, just to look around a bit? Zeilona Gora? And how far is Karpacz? I think this is a ski town in Poland? Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks.

Life / What breeds of dogs are now popular in Poland? [40]

Asia, it worries me too. I don't know what people see in pitbulls - they are not friendly, ugly, and everybody except for their owners hates them. Poles, of course, try to mock everything that is "American" - including pets

??? What ?? Hello, please understand that not all, and definitely not the majority of Americans have Pit Bulls or like Pit Bulls! Some states have outlawed them, and personally I don't like them & won't go near one... See Krysia's post.

And when I read your other post about genetically engineered dog food, I am ROFLMAO !!! Many of us feed our dogs raw or a mix of raw & kibble, which I do. Raw chicken & beef and kibble. Great for the dog.

Personally I have wire hair dachshund. My friends in Poland have dachshunds - the larger ones, and terriers. I have seen some very very cute dogs in Poland, some medium size dogs which looked sort of like terriers. Very cute.

Food / !!!Frikadels!!!! [5]

"Frikadels" as you call them, are a German thing. I used to get them ALLLLLLLL the time in Deutschland. They are awesome. Kind of the German version of an American Hamburger. No sauce on these, though.

Ground pork, chop onions really tiny, salt & pepper, egg plain bread crumbs. Mix it all together, make into burgers. Fry until cooked really well. Have it on a roll with mustard.

Aaaah. I think I will be having one when I come back to Europe. Sigh.

Travel / Visiting girlfriend in Poland for Christmas, need some advice [15]

br1ev8, suggest a cabernet sauvignon or merlot.... I used to date a guy that was a wine importer, and he convinced me that the French make fantastic wine... the reds are so nice & smooth.

Ooooh jewelry for the GF, how nice and thoughtful. :)

Travel / Visiting girlfriend in Poland for Christmas, need some advice [15]

When I visited friends I took small gifts from Crabtree & Evelyn - lotions & soaps in a little gift box for the ladies and Crown Royal :) for the men. Of course gifts for the children, candy or small toys. You can get some of the gifts in the US which is nice, and then maybe buy whatever booze you want to give over there in Poland. Just ask your girlfriend what her family likes.

This Christmas I am sending gifts to the children, a gift to my friend and a big box of chocolate covered pretzels for everyone to enjoy.

Life / The Christmas Tree in Poland [25]

Wow the blue spruce trees are the best! We had an 8' one last year. Used to get white pines and sometimes fir trees when I was a kid in Philly.

Interesting when I was a kid we never put up the tree till 24 Dec. and no presents till 25th, and I see that its so in PL too. I think its that way many places in Europe. Here in the US the trees are up before December! Ridiculous! Sigh. I miss Europe.
