Language / Seeking a basic intro to the Polish Language [17]

Cześć this is my first post.
Is there somewhere on this forum or anywhere on the web where there is a ' plain as toast' laid out display of basic Polish learning (ex. Letters, Numbers, Date, Nature, common verbs, pronunciation, and basic grammar). I've been searching, and it's hard to find a good starter. The schools near me don't teach Polish (I don't know why), only popular Western and basic Eastern languages.

I speak English[live in USA], Korean [(Asian) 2nd language] and some Spanish[Language from High School].

I am currently studying Italian [(close to Latin) because of opera] and German [(close to English) because of business] and 'Java' [(computer language) yes, I like to organize].

I posted the language that I am interested or have knowledge in because I wanted to know if knowing or studying these will interfere with my study of Polish??

I have a great interest in languages, and Polish is one of the languages I have a special desire to learn for many reasons. However, the language is nowhere near what I'm used to or can recognize (I think it is of Slavic?/Slavonic? origin). I will need the most basic introduction. Please help.

I can also offer help in English unless you want me to translate, then not so much. //Slangs, idioms, some cultural cliches and what not.//

Yes, thank you very much.

However, that service seems to only provide definitions for words or phrases, not really how they work. However (yet again), it gives me audio pronunciation which is wonderful and it also utilizes the flash card learn remember system, which I think will be very useful.

If there is anything else, please tell me.

By the way, I have looked at the university's website on polish. It is great, but not exactly in the criteria I'm looking for. Anyways, please comment more.

How do I make that sound?!?!

I try naturally, but it won't come out. It sound like I'm suffering from some disease. I can make the sound like machine gun, but it is far from being a natural sound.

Please help with any practices, or diagrams of what my mouth should look like, etc.

No, in all languages, that 'R' is my weakness... I can get down most Latin accents, but not that 'R'. If I get the rolling R down, I will be able to roll it in all languages that need it. However, in Polish, I believe, there is no 'R' that isn't rolled(?), so I need to get it down.

Sometimes, when I practice (trying to say the spanish 'RR') like "eh rer reh' and sometimes, when the rolling sound does come out, it sounds unnatural like a machine gun, a broken one at that.

Also, the only time that the sound does come out, is when my teeth are ALMOST clenched but not touching. Is that the wrong technique?

It seems, that your technique of putting the tongue further back definitely works better for me. I can seem to make a roughly 'r' sound, although still unnatural, more easily.

Ok, I have been able to get the Polish 'R' down a little better. And about 'R'omania... I can make the R as I speak in English. I've never heard 'L'omania before, but... I guess there's always a first time.

Language / A good learning book for Polish [44]

I decided to get a book, because I don't have my computer around all the time, although it did help to learn a few words and phrases.

Are there any Polish learning books that you (especially those that have tried to learn it from English) recommend? (other recommendations are welcome as well).

Also do they come with supplementary CDs or AUDIO?

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

Its the American government keeping the native gas in Alaska or somewher else on reserve. We buy from all the foreign countries making our gas so expensive. When the gas "runs out" in other places, the US will probably open its storehouses and charge some ridiculous amounts.

As for me, gas is ridiculous, but not as much compared to other places.

Work / How much does a programmer make in PL [3]

So I was wondering, because in the US they make a nice amount all depending on experience.

However, how are the salaries in Poland for a computer programmer in general?

In US its around $50,000 (121,493.04 PLN) average I believe.

I'm not sure what the "dollar" amount of Poland is so, the exchange rate doesn't help me too much.

[ex. what the Americans consider as $1 (buy a soda, chips) is basically consider 1000 WON in South Korea.. 1000 is a big number, but the number itself has nothing to do with the value.]

Study / AGH Studying (Computer Science) in Poland [20]

How are the schools in Poland?

I'm here in America and only know of all the American schools and Oxford/Cambridge in the UK. Are some of the schools mentioned above comparable to somewhere like MIT or Stanford? Is it a completely different system there?

I'm not sure if this is legal in this forum but I want to bump this up because it has helped so much. Verbs have got to be the hardest thing to find in Polish learning. Mostly grammar and nouns.

I really appreciate these vids. I have understood some of the more conversational/situational videos and I am sensing humor (it is hard to sense when you have no idea what they are saying).

I know that in certain languages "to do" and "to make" are the same word (e.g. Italian fare). But what is that z in Polish?

I have a question.

Do Polish people think it is rude for you to greet them if they are in the middle of something (such as writing something, reading, etc)? Is it polite to first make eye contact then greet, or greet as soon as you see them [even if they haven't seen you]?

I know in some cultures, it is rude to greet someone when the person is busy or doing something.

Ok, so there is no set "courtesy" in Polish for greetings... I know if I come and say hi to my dad if he is like talking to people he'll get upset...

It has a few readings in Polish downloadable as mp3 files and parallel texts of the readings in English and Polish.

Life / Daylight Savings Time in Poland [15]

Does Poland use DST? I was wondering, because some people I talk to from Poland were not available when I called them usually the same time I always call them.

I heard that most countries use it now, while before it was only in the US.

News / Should Polish citizens living abroad have the right to vote in elections [69]

I am not so sure how politics work and such, but this is my idea. Abroad citizens should be able to elect officials who represent the 'abroad citizens' in 'abroad affairs (if there are any)' which then means that they actually do get a say in the vote.

Citizens are citizens, and although they do not live in the land of their citizenship, that land is the only place where they have the franchise. It would be a shame, not being able to vote anywhere.

Is the idea ridiculous, or somewhat sensible?

that can't be it, right? I've seen w too, but i would like to know all of them. They seem to be prepositions or conjunctions(?). It would be useful to know them all, and easy because they are just 1 letter.

When do you use them? Actually, I think a friend of mine corrected me on this one time, but she never told me why.

Can 'a' possible mean 'but'? Like "This style is pretty but the other is not" ?
