Life / Polish Christmas Traditions [19]

Don't you think we have real trees in UK Mazza and Poland doesn't have plastic ones? I've had a real xmas tree at home all my life and my wife's family in Poland has a plastic silver one. Not everything Poland does is the best - please realise

News / EU Hypocrisy Regarding Polish Shipyards [30]

Ok mazza, enough already. Our health service is unique in the world in that its completely free. It is being completely stretched by the sheer numbers of people in our country. How can we expect the quality to be high. If you want a good service, take out a BUPA healthcare scheme, its not that expensive and the service is top class. In Wales we have free medicene for everyone but we cant expect to have this and a top service.

Are you in favour of raising taxes in order to improve our health service? Where could the money come from?

These people who cannot afford the above mentioned BUPA scheme seem to be able to afford a SKY+ satellite system, internet connection and all of life's little luxuries. If it is calculated how much the average family spends on these litlle luxuries they could well afford a basic medical insurance package.

News / EU Hypocrisy Regarding Polish Shipyards [30]

I agree with what ur saying but my father was a miner and of the 2000 people that were unemployed from my area of Wales after the mines closed, 98% found jobs in other companies. My father learned things in the mine that he could take to other companies ie. he became a qualified welder and now works for lansing linde as a team trainer for a very good salarry. Most of his friends are in the same position.

I have even heard him say that he was thankful the pits closed now cos he would have been stuck there for the rest of his life, he had no motivation to better himself.

This is the same for all the workers at the shipyard, if they are forced to better themselves they will. Everyone is comfortable with being stuck in a rut.

News / EU Hypocrisy Regarding Polish Shipyards [30]

I hate to say this, but the Polish shipyards are just a drain on resources and the only reason they stay open are to keep unemployment low and because of tradition and the links to solidarnosc. All Poland needs is a prime minister like the Uk had inj the reign of thatcher and im sure the shipyards will close. Thatcher wasnt afraid to close down the mines in the UK in the face of massive unemployment, she realised mining was a fading industry and coal imports were cheaper than our own stuff. It hit especially hard in Wales but it was a necessary evil.

Stocznia in Poland is an archaic instution and the sooner Poland realises this the sooner it can move on.

Life / The Quality of Water In Poland. Should we boil and filter it? [38]

Poles are so paranoid about this issue that the cousin;s of my wife even use bottled water to boil veg. When I drank out of the tap in their house, they pronoounced me dead there and then. Im sure I saw a herse pu;; up outside.

Have you ever tried asking for a jug of tap water in a restaurant?? If not give it a go and insist on it, they give the strangest looks.

They dont run in Poland, in fact I saw them 'chase' a man tru a shopping centre fo about 30 secs then they called in to the station and said they 'lost' him. It was a joke

Believe me PD the UK doesnt do things that badly, and Poland doesnt do things that well. Wait till u live here, u'll see

Life / Uniformed people in Poland - explanation needed. [17]

The guys who patrol the streets atr the straz miejska (city guard) and they really have no power, they can issue parking tickets and detain till the police come.

A strange thing in Poland is that they have train security who dress in full military camouflage and have nightsticks attached to their waists. Think they need to make these guys feel important or sth.

One thing ive never understood in Poland is why all these uniformed guys incl police tuck their trousers in their boots. It just looks stupid

Language / What do you find difficult about learning Polish? [98]

I would take some lessons in Polish grammar if I were u. I've been learning Polish for 5 yrs and I am only at an upper int level, this is because the entry test I took for the schhol was rather grammar heavy and I got my endings screwed up. I might have been in a Post upper int grp if it wasnt for those poxy endings.

There are 7 cases in Polish and these determine the endings:
1. Locative
2. Dative
3. Vocative
4. Accusative
5. Nominative
6. Instrumental
7. Genitive

There are plenty of websites which can explain these cases to you for I dont have the will at the mo.

Hope this helped

Language / What do you find difficult about learning Polish? [98]

I attend a school of Polish and am in an upper intermediate group but even at this level I am still having some problems such as:

1. Noun endings
2. The subltle differences between all the words that can be made from the stems jechac and ciagnac (around 20 apparently) ie. dojechac, pojechac, przyjechac etc
3. The fact that one polish person will use one grammatical form whilst another will use a diff form to say exactly the same thing.
4. dokonane and nie dokonane - when the fuck to use each one. I know the rules but its so diff to put into practice.

Anyone else having similar problems? Please dont go into and explaination of the rules as I know them, just wondering if anyone else has the same probs as me

Isnt it a 'maybe' list? ... Should it be taken so seriously?

News / Writing Polish letters on Gadu Gadu please help! [16]

Like we have done to english you mean? If you want to speak a language like a native then you must sound natural, and naturally poles do not use these marks on their letters. Look at the way english is abused by its own ppl.

Language / My Learning Polish Woes... [64]

Ok London Chick, you should try the Pimsleur course, it worked for me. There are 2 Pimsleur Polish courses available, pimsleur polish I and pimsleur polish II. Pimsleur I is readily available on the internet through torrents but the Pimsleur 2 is hard to find and I ended up buying it, but it was worth every penny. I sold it to a frien otherwise I would make mp3s of it and send it to u.

As z_dariusz, the best metheod to learn is constant repetition and Pimsleur takes care of this for you

Hope this helped

I swear in English as it is my native language (welsh too) but I dont think I could swear in Polish until i could truly feel the extent of the word. I hear poles saying F*** all the time and it makes me angry that they use thi$s when they refuse to use K****

Please dont use words like that when you dont know the full extent of their meaning.

News / Poles Ranks First in Computer Coding [47]

Again, how do a bunch of Welsh entertainers make the original's posters claims false?

Again I am not falsifying the original posters claims, I am responding to sth u said about nothing good coming out of Wales. (read ur posts properly)

Have you ever even been to Poland? I like Polish ppl but I cant stand it when they claim that they have the best of everything, sopot Molo, gdynia aquarium (where the **** are the fish?) football, basket ball (they even think they can beat the Americans). In ur posts u came across as being exactly like this.

Ok dariusz, canada is full of culture and full of history, packed full of historical buildings and oh all that significance to the world. I dont brag about Britains great history cos I was not part of it. Wales is not an independent country nor would we want to be. We are not 'ruled' by England as you would see if you did some research, we have our own government and actually we have free medicene education etc in Wales which England doesnt have and also Wales has taxing powers as well. Obviously your research in this area is lacking just as my research in the area of some old Polish discoveries. If you wanna go down this route, just look at all the famous Welsh film stars in hollywood: - Zeta-Jones, Hopkins, Burton, Gruffydd, Ifans, Hopkins. Also Wales has had a massive influence on the music scene, Manic st Preachers to name just 1.
