Life / Choosing a Polish Name for Your Newborn [15]

In Poland, every girl and their sister is named Kasia...I swear.

And in the US, every girl and their sister is named Kate or Katie...I swear ;)

Kathryn/Katherine/Catherine, Katarzyna, Ekaterina, Katharina, Katalin... It's just a popular name all over. :P

Life / I'm an American who lived in Poland for 6 years. I'm not welcome anymore. [169]

Honestly I think michaelmansun is troll

If he's even real at all... I think this may have just been a joke thread to see what kind of reaction he'd get. Perhaps some sort of social experiment? Because I really don't know anyone who would brag openly about being an illegal immigrant...even an American...especially an American. =P

Genealogy / Goralczyk and meaning of czyk [14]

What are the differences between the endings -czyk, -czak, -czek, and -czok (and any I might be forgetting)? Did they stem from different regions?

Law / Questions about gaining a Polish citizenship and the process of getting one. [29]

Obtaining Polish citizenship requires you to prove you have Polish ancestry (grandparents at the least, parents are better)

Or two great-grandparents-- but they have to have left Poland after WWI ended, otherwise you'll have to prove you had family in Poland before the partitions, which can be quite time-consuming and expensive to do.

USA, Canada / Work ethics in Poland vs US [66]

Is it true, that in USA employee has only 10 days of paid leave ? If so, how do you cope with that?

10 days if you're lucky. The US is one of the only developed countries that doesn't mandate paid vacations or holidays. And according to a study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research found that a full 25% of Americans don't get any paid vacations or holidays whatsoever. I know I certainly don't get any paid days-off. =P And quite frankly, I find your 26 unimaginable. ;)

I thought Americans were idiots but i didn't think they were that stupid. All my suspicions are confirmed.

I hope I'm not stupid... :(

It was the Russians who liberated Poland from Germany

...and simultaneously killed nearly 22,000 of them at Katyn, but don't let that stop your rant.

Genealogy / What region of poland is my family from? [27]

moi krewni.pl

Love that site 8) I search random names there all the time. :D Though they show my name as being most popular in Lodz, when I know for a fact my ancestors were from Kroscienko nad Dunajcem. :P Though Nowy Sacz does show up as the fourth city, which is a lot closer to Kroscienko n/D than Lodz, Zgierz, and Warsaw. =P So just be careful with what you find on that site...remember that just 'cuz Lodz and Warsaw might show up as having the most people with your name, doesn't mean that's necessarily where your family came from. There are a lot of people in those cities, so naturally there will be more people with one name there. ;)

Polonia / Interest in the remnant German community in Poland [29]

Merged: Polen in Deutschland? Polish people in Germany?

So, I'm doing my concentration on the history of Poles in Germany. Are there any Poles here currently living in Germany? Or any descendants of Poles who migrated to Germany, for example Ruhr Poles? If yes, respond to this thread, PM me, or email me (email's on my profile; just click the link)

Ich studiere die Geschichte der Polen in Deutschland. Gibt es hier Polen, die jetzt in Deutschland wohnen? Oder gibt es hier Leute, die in direkter Linie von Polen, z.B. Ruhrpolen, abstammen?

P.S. Sorry for the crappy German--that's what happens when you haven't been in a German classroom for 3 months. =P

You could claim german citizenship...many russian-germans did it...they had not much more connection!

Lol, I heard about that. Even once read an article that claimed "Germany will soon speak Russian" ( news.mail.ru/politics/2289528 I'm not studying the Russians, though. ;)

Life / I'm an American who lived in Poland for 6 years. I'm not welcome anymore. [169]

I was saying that it wasn't America that liberated Poland (previously stated by Tork).

Granted. I just tend to take issue with the use of the word "liberated" here. Somehow I just can't see how conquest through genocide, massive deportations, and later the installation of puppet governments is in any way a "liberation." Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying the U.S. hasn't used similar tactics. It's just that I have a hard time understanding how you could say anyone liberated Poland, especially the Russians.
