Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

The problem is you won't earn much developing for linux.. sad fact but a fact nonetheless. On the other hand you can indulge yourself in writing apps in vi and wearing poky t-shirt with a penguin. And Mono doesn't even support .NET 3.0

Travel / I am free - Hello Poland. Need advice about travelling in Poland. [16]

Does it get that cold ?

I'd say it's around 0C in the southern Poland right now.. there's a fair amount of roadside hotels, pretty cheap lodging here and there, and you shouldn't have any problems with finding accommodation in bigger cities, that's of course, if you stick to the beaten track.

unless you have a snowplow

yeah, and remember to take a rifle against all the polar bears.. That's kinda going over the top, we've got a thaw here right now, it's more muddy then snowy, winter tires should be enough

have a nice trip

Life / Where to get a cup of coffee in Warsaw? [40]

silly smoker, it's not like you get "nothing", you can of course get a nice lung cancer...
besides most of trains have cars for smokers, and where's your freedom of choice when I have to queue or walk behind somebody who is smoking, and that way I'm also breathing in cigarette smoke eww.. disgusting

Travel / I am free - Hello Poland. Need advice about travelling in Poland. [16]

from what I remember "Nowa Huta" is not a safest place for walks. I've been there few years ago and a friend of mine told me not to potter around when I'm alone cause there's a pretty big chance I'm gonna get beaten, has anything changed lately?

Work / Moving to Poland in April 2009, need to find IT-related job! suggestions? [21]

well.. programmers salary just after graduating is between 2000 - 3000zlpm average, maybe plus 500-1000 if it's in a big company.. or if it is in Warsaw. Best thing to do is to find a company in your place that will allow you to work abroad if you are as good and experienced as you say you are then this shouldn't be a problem, with you beeing paid in euroes and living in Poland.

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

I can tell you about the impact, at first when most of those big supermarkets and shopping centers started appearing, owners of little stores went rioting, trade unions, petitions, stuff like that. Generally they thought they're gonna loose all clients, and clients will loose possibility to buy goods in genuinely polish shops with business tradition handled by the same family for generations..

and... nothing happened, at least for me as a customer, actually such aggregation of shops created a healthy competition that can only benefit us, customers..

beside that for some time in Poland there's a certain notion indicating that workers in many small size supermarkets are beeing exploited, you can see an article about it every now and then..

Food / Asian food - is it easy to find in Poland (particularly Lublin)? [39]

They give away Tortillas in every possible place nowadays, even in mcdonald, probably it's not the real deal but always some kind of a substitute.. I dunno of any mexican or north american restaurants in Silesia.. but I can only speak for Zabrze and Gliwice...

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

I think it depends on specific shop/supermarket, some put change on the counter and some put it in your hand.. I don't think it's a polish supermarkets trait.. the same with fish tanks, besides they appear only in the bigger supermarkets and most of tescos at least here in silesia are medium sided, some don't have any special "fish" section.

The thing with rucksacks, it's probably the same, in some supermarkets you can carry whatever you like to carry, in some cases guards won't let you pass. I remember that at one point I wasn't allowed to carry my bag in Real supermarket, and previously I havn't had any problems with that - so maybe it depends on how you look like, you probably shouldn't grin suspiciously at the guards..

Life / Wlatcy Moch?? [14]

oh how I hate this cartoon, especially cause my friend told me I sound like one of the characters.. South Park becomes sophisticated intellectual ride next to Wlatcy Much..

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

Just don't go shopping when you're hungry, that's the worst thing to do. I can add that some time ago in polish supermarkets there was only 1 checkout in 5 opened for customers who were queuing in this one place. Understaffed and cutting costs by not hiring enough people, but I think that this problem is not existant anymore.

UK, Ireland / Supermarkets in Poland: differences and similarities to the UK. [62]

Well it's not that bad, I remember going to Slovakia when I was a kid. In one of their supermarkets (it was the smallest kind ) there was a guarding lady who would let in only 10 people at the same time. It was a 40-smth people sightseeing party, so we had to wait..

Love / Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Especially In Another Language! [46]

jedynie marzac, dlaczego nie zostalem w domu

jedynie marzac, ze zostalem w domu.

ale powoli cos zaczelo psuc sie i

ale problemy zaczely sie nawarstwiac i

Stad tez nie chce, abys

Jednakze ja nie chce, abys

I just don't think it will work out...

Przewiduje, ze sprawy nie uloza sie latwo z praca, poniewaz szef do kuchni

Asik you shouldn't change the meaning.. should be:
Po prostu nie sądzę że to potoczy się dobrze, szef kuchni

a inne wolne miejsca pracy sa dla osob z bieglym jezykiem angielskim.

a pozostaly jedynie miejsca pracy w czesci lokalu dla klientow i wymagaja bieglej znajomosci jezyka angielskiego.

ze pracuje a naprawde to nie pracuje

ze pracuje a tak naprawde to nie pracuje

zebym byl bardziej rozsadny lub zostawal w domu i rozmawial z Toba.

zebym byl bardziej rozsadny i zostawal w domu by z Toba rozmawiac.

I can see myself resenting the fact that you don't want me going out to the pub or having time alone with myself and you don't want to be stranded here with no-one...or worse, stuck in job with someone who has just broke up with you having to see them every day and worse, living in the same house.

it's far from "small error"

Hi Asik, I dunno what is your problem, it's actually you who were chasing after me, you commented on two of my posts, so I'm commenting on yours. I was going to translate the whole thing, but your translation just popped out so I felt like sharing some knowledge, besides most of your post is alright. I'm not cruising after you, stop flattering yourself :) And I really do want to hear where I make my "big" mistakes because this way I can probably learn something. Sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you by pointing out those mistakes / improper word constructions - I think people who learn Polish can actually benefit by seeing two versions, or for example yours and my proper one. Take care...

Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

meh, not for everyone ^_^

Yeah, I dunno why, but most of linux users I've seen are fat guys wearing old black sweaters or old penguin t-shirts, no fashion sense at all, jabbering about how can they use vii to code, and that every Microsoft app has a counterpart for linux.. I refuse to join that world ;)

Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

I'm happy for your good health girls ;)

I'm a girl, my friend (the one who helped me get it working at first,

That's the problem with Linux, it's hard to approach, you can spend hours on installing it, if you don't have another pc plugged into internet, it can be really hard to go through the installation process. You just dunno why smth is not working until you skim through boards and forums just to discover that you have to edit some txt file in a random location on your hdd.. The only thing I like about linux is the way its firewall works, possibility to edit redirection of every kind packet that comes to your pc (probably that's why various versions of linux with cli are beeing installed in routers). If you have a lot of pc having a router-server pc with linux on board can be a nice idea, but you need to have some knowledge first..

As for GIMP, it has a pretty steep learning curve, I really like it, and I'm using it on my WinXP, but most friends I talked to about it were fed up with how it works and how it is hard to do anything. Besides for professional use Photoshop or Corel can't be replaced. The same with other freeware apps like Blender, it's ok for a beginner and probably it opens possibilities in front of kids and student who can't afford Autodesk apps, but still big companies will use 3dmax or Maya.. and again it's difficult to use. Software developer companies pump a lot of money into user interface, introduction and help desk for their software. It's a different thing about open source...

I'm happy nobody is attacking MS and Windows yet, you're just focusing on linux, that's good, the worst breed of linux fans is the kind that goes into "windows is crap" ;)

One of my friends is a real believer, in every possible discussion he always adds some weird linux phrases like "linux is like sex it's best when it's free", always quarrels about why linux is better then windows, always carries an auto-bootable distr cd, and jokes about blue screen of death a lot.. that's the type of a linux user I don't like : o
