Work / Poznan - Career Path [22]

I just arrived in Poznan from the U.S. and am actively looking for a new career within the city. I look to make Poznan my home and am looking for any advice or direction as to jobs w/multinational companies, local businesses looking for English-speakers (as I don't speak any Polish yet), steps on how to become a private English tutor, etc. I have an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) and a bachelors degree in Marketing. I have 9 years experience in telecommunications, client/customer service, management, and sales.

***I'd also like to open this thread up for anyone living/working in Poznan since I can't really find much from those within the forum.*** Let's feel free to open discussion with job openings, advice, and support.

Law / "Texas style" steakhouse in Poznan. Worthy investment? [35]

This may be a little late (6 mts), but I still hope it gets to someone interested in this thread.

I just moved to Poznan from South Texas at the beginning of December. I'm originally from the Rio Grande Valley (great barbeque and genuine Mexican) and moved to Houston (great steaks and smoky cookouts) for about 3 years. I'm a barbeque fanatic and love really smoky and awesome-smelling cookouts. Grilling's one of my favorite things to do and would love to hear some feedback on the barbeque scene in Poznan (if there's one, or if there's a possibility of having one). If you all think there ain't a market for this sort of thing, how about a simple hamburger joint? I know there's a healthy amount of foreigners in Poznan due to the schools here, including a number of Americans longing for some homestyle cookouts. What do you think? Get back to me.

Life / Any traditional barber shops in Poznan or Wroclaw? [3]

Does anyone know of any traditional barbershops around any of these two cities? I just moved from the US and am looking for a barber, or wherever, that can cut a clean pompadour or at least close to it. I've looked around Google, and found some barbers set up in hotels. Any word on these or similar?

Work / Poznan - Career Path [22]

Delphi, would you happen to know any of the schools' names/locations that you speak of? All in all, it looks like teaching's going to be the starting point for me here in Poznan, which is no problem at all. Actually, I'm kind of excited about it. If you can't remember any of the schools' names stated in your previous post, would you suggest that I create and post flyers around schools/universities for private lessons? As far as rates go, I've seen people around the forum say they've been charging between 40pln and 60pln. What's your take on this? Oh, and as for the weather yesterday, I'd have to say that's the coldest I've ever been in! I just came from deep South Texas where the temperature only dips below 0c one or two days out of the year. Love those long johns!

Hmm, I'd have to remember to stay away from bringing back that 90's trend of "hamburgery" Mafketis. I think I'll stay a little closer to my roots and grill up a good 'ol Texas-style greasy burger. I've got a few "recipes (if you'd want to call them that)" up my sleeve that I'd love to experiment with around here. Hopefully this cold spell thaws out soon and we can schedule a cookout or something for the visitors here. Man, I miss my grill. And now I need a beer.

Life / Any traditional barber shops in Poznan or Wroclaw? [3]

I'm going to have to visit the Novotel soon. Thanks for your help!

Oh, and a pompadour is a style of haircut that is sort of a 50's type. There's a bunch of different looking kinds. They range from the big kind, like those seen in the film Grease or Elvis', and then there are those not so huge. They're more clean cut.

I got my first pompadour this past November. It was more of a dare to myself to get one only because my wife moved over here to Poznan two months before I did. I don't think she would've approved if she was still there.

My barber did a better job than what I expected though. I thought I was going to get out of there looking like a 50's hot rod greaser racing type of guy. Which I would've liked too of course, but he made it look clean cut and professional looking, but cool. To find out what they look like, visit Slickville.com. My barber's actually on there under the Barbershop link too. He's under Galveston, Texas (Manny's).

Ok, I'd have to admit, this is the longest I've ever talked about hair. I'm off to find a barber. Thanks again for your advice!

Work / Job opportunities in Poland for a foreigner? (other than a teacher) [175]

I just arrived in Poznan from the U.S. (Houston, TX) and am actively looking for a new career within the city. I look to make Poznan my new home and am looking for any advice or direction as to jobs w/multinational companies, local businesses looking for English-speakers (as I don't speak any Polish yet), even steps on how to become a private English tutor, etc.

I have an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) and a bachelors degree in Marketing. I have 9 years experience in telecommunications (Sprint Nextel Corporation), client/customer service, management, and sales.

I recently began a new thread titled "Poznan - Career Path" though noticed more traffic on this thread. Thanks for your help!

Food / Butcher Shops in Poznan? [7]

Does anyone know of any butcher shops in Poznan where one can buy a steak, ground beef for burgers, or any other cuts of meat?

Food / Butcher Shops in Poznan? [7]

I've really got to get out and do some exploring! I've been holed up in my apartment (flat) since I've gotten here wondering if there's this and if there's that and where to find it. I thank everyone here for their posts and direction. Once I start to learn where I am a little better, I'll be back to do the same for those like myself.

Anyway, I have another question or three. I noticed that the small gas tanks (for heating/cooking) have a similar-looking connection to those like the propane tanks in the U.S.

First question: Is the gas propane or butane?
Second: Would anyone know if the connection is the same? I guess you would call it a spout or whatever it is where you connect the hose to the place on the tank where you turn the knob to turn the gas on.

Third question: Where can I find an outdoor gas grill, or do I have to import one? I'm looking for one you can find on the web in stores such as Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. I couldn't find anyone to take mine from me before I left since their apartments' balconies were too small. I had to leave it next to my apartment's trash bin hoping it would find a good home. 30 minutes later it was gone. Ah, pretty useless info. It wasn't like I was giving up a dog or anything...but it sure felt like it.

Work / Poznan - Career Path [22]

Bolek, I like your style! I've been wondering myself where all the burger stands are. And I've been dying for a burger. A barbeque burger. Onions. Pickles. Jalapenos. Grease dripping down my arm. It looks like I've been a little pessimistic lately. Thanks for your input.

Delphi, call me naive, but I'm sort of new to this solarium thing. Yes we do have them in the states, but man, the girls here don't look tanned. They look orange. Am I wrong? No offense to the tanning bed ladies at all, but spend your expendable income on something else a little more enjoyable...like a big greasy burger. Now that I'm thinking about it, what's better? Fat or orange? Hmm.

USA, Canada / Getting married in Poland for a USA citizen [10]

First, welcome to PF and congrats on the nuptials-to-be! If you're in the Poznan area, the bachelor party's definitely on!

I'm definitely no expert on this sort of stuff, but I'll do my best to find out some answers for you unless someone else on the forum gets back to you faster (as I'm sure they will).

Before I go searching for some more answers, check out this thread posted back in the day:

USA, Canada / Getting married in Poland for a USA citizen [10]

After asking around and researching a little bit, krysia seems to have posted all that you need, really.

The letter you have from the American embassy in Warsaw should be enough to fulfill the "free to marry" certificate requirement, though it might probably state that the embassy (or federal government) is unable to provide this information (correct me if I'm wrong here). Therefore, you will need to apply and then set up a court appointment to be released from this requirement. This then goes back to krysia's first post stating that it can take awhile to accomplish.

Question: Are the both of you in the states are are the both of you already here? If you're in the states, then it's a whole different story.

Good luck and if I hear, or read, anything different, I'll be sure to post it ASAP.

If it's easier for the both of you, then get the civil ceremony done in the US, which can be for your family and then come back to Poland to have the church ceremony for her family (unless they're not the religious type)?

This is what my wife and I did and it worked out a heck of a lot easier for both of our families and they were both very happy. She was there on a student visa back then.

Love / Looking for ideal place in Poznan to propose to my girlfriend. [14]

Hey Estrado!

As to where to propose to your girlfriend (and if you have to do it in Poznan), I'd recommend proposing in one of the nice parks. I hope that the weather warms up by the time you get here. It's pinche cold compared to back home!

Escribame! Hopefully we can meet and get a little pistiado.
Buen viaje!

Juan

Work / Poznan - Career Path [22]

Hey Giovanni!

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I'm normally a bit more punctual if someone's asking for help or advice.

Anyway, my hunt for work has disappointedly come to a complete halt (sort of) within the past 4 months. I've officially become a full time stay-at-home dad after my daughter was born in February. I've been submitting my CV to HP and Google from time to time but to no avail. The jobs I applied for ask for English and Spanish-speaking people, but I'm more than sure that they're looking for someone who also speaks Polish, which I do not. I haven't been in such a deep crunch here where I would desperately need to land a job, luckily, so this is why I have been lazy in my hunt.

I am interested in teaching English to get have some extra change in my pocket, but with summer starting and me going to the States for a month, this calls for another brief pause in my search for work.

I wish I could've been more help to you, but like I said, I've called off the job hunt for now. If I can offer any suggestions though, I would begin with teaching English (or your native language of course) in either one of the language schools around here or by posting an ad on poznan.gumtree.pl offering private lessons. This would be in case you can't find anything relating to the business field when you arrive or soon thereafter, of course. You can also find some multinational companies in town and drop off your CV. I've heard this is the best way to get anywhere near the door when looking for work. Anyway, I wish you luck in your search! Let me know how it goes!

I also see that your girlfriend is studying medicine here in Poznan! My wife just completed her first year yesterday. She's in the 4-year program at Poznan University of Medical Science. What program/level is your girlfriend in?

Ok, enough of this useless novel! Let me know when you get here and we'll meet up for some drinks and then you can maybe join our expat meetups that take place every so often!

Thanks for reaching out and I look forward to hearing from you!
